"Alright then, that seems to satisfy most of it. My client has requested a search and recover, possibly rescue of you. You've been gone for... a few hundred years. A few years ago, the ship carrying your nano-restoration pod went missing, presumed lost in the area when pirates became active. Why you were on the ship, I don't know, but somebody paid big bucks to get you fully upgraded with modern equipment." Her lips don't quite line up to what you're hearing. Is this some kind universal translator thingy?

I shrug off the considerations about the translator... At this point all that matters is I can communicate. "Hold on... A few hundred years? How do your client knows about my life? And for that matter... Where the hell are we?"

"I don't know how they know about your life, although since you're probably connected to the Thalman corporation, I assume they've got some records or others." she gives a shrug. "This is..." She pulls down her goggles, just over one eye and reads something off of it, "Eden 3612, a garden world that is technically off limits." she gives you a quick summary of a race of 'demi-humans' who are protected under religious exclusions. "Now, are you coming with me, or not?"

"It's pronounced 'Thälmann'" I respond instinctively respond to the mispronunciation. Listening to the explanation I let out a curse, "The fuck is this? A fantasy setting? Demi-humans... Jesus fuck, let's get the hell off this insane fucking planet. At this point I don't even care if you one of my kidnappers, I just know I don't want to be here."

She nods and begins to lead you away into the jungle. It takes several hours for you to make it back toward her ship. Looking at it, it's some kind of semi-chemical rocket system, something that can get her up to orbit, but little else. There's a patch of absolute blackness spread out which you take to be a solar collector. A small hose runs over to a pond, and is draining it. Based on what you're seeing, it's likely a system that breaks water down for fuel components. It's a vertical launch system as well, with a set of scorch marks indicating where it landed.

Kate's hand darts up to her headset as she begins to scan the sky. She holds you back, stepping away from the small shuttle system. "My carrier ship is under attack. We can start the ship up, but once we launch, we'll be visible." Considering the presence of pirates...

After waiting for several moments, Kate begins to move toward her ship again, and begins to enter it and set it up for pre-launch. You hear the thing hum to full life as an internal reactor of some kind begins to put out power, and the pond starts to noticeably shrink as the ship begins to ready itself. A sudden batch of cursing from Li, in a variety of different languages, and she's grabbed you and is making a dive out of the ship and running quickly. After a few seconds a sudden flash is visible, followed by the sound of thunder as the ship is detonated by whatever pirates are in orbit. Li sits up, bringing you up. "Well. The pirates are sore losers it seems." She says, rubbing the back of her head.

As much as I would like to take a look at the ship, I must, unfortunately focus on getting the hell off this planet. I follow her instructions quickly before she throws me out. "Son of a bitch! Let me get the fuck out you freaking assholes," I scream at the skies, but my old marine senses were kicking in. From the sounds of it, we've lost... space superiority, and thus we need to go to ground. "Anything useful survive? If not we need to get out of here. This will be the first place they check. There were also some supplies they were trying to get at when I escaped my captors. We can risk collecting them, but we'll have to move fast, as that'll be the second place they check. We'll need to find a defensible location that wouldn't be blindingly obvious."

Bits of the ship are beginning to rain down around you. The largest piece is a solid block of semimolten slag. "That's the reactor. We don't need to worry about radiation or anything with it sealed up like that." she tells you, but the scattered circuits and material look like they'd take a while to sort through. You could always come back and mine some more of the technology and equipment. "I've got some basic gear, but we need to figure out where to set up shop for now. I know there's a cave system near here, but I don't know exactly where. The other option is to travel light and keep moving.

Li begins to explore and loot the area. She also eyes the ship left over, but is wise enough not to bother touching something that may or may not be booby trapped. She loots the two corpses from before, although besides some basic weapons, they don't have much on them. Any and all supplies are likely still on their ship, not that you couldn't try to break into it. The hydrogen tank has finished patching itself, although it's low on fuel now. Opening up the remaining room, there's a horrid screech as the metal 'door' is forced the rest of the way open. (Luck: 11) Inside, you find what looks to be high purity material additives if you're recalling the chemical formulas properly. If you find a source of iron and carbon, you can make some good steel based on what's in here. Of course, there's also gold and platinum and such, but it's not terribly useful right now, is it?

Exploring the terrain, you find the cave systems after an hour of searching in the direction Li indicated, and it's a good thirty minute walk to and from. Not terrible, and there's more caves nearby, so heading deep into one could give you some cover.

"About how long do you think it'll take to break into that," I say, gesturing to the ship. In the storeroom, however, I find some very nice things. The iron and carbon are nice enough but there is also gold and platinum. They are always going to be valuable regardless, so having them for trade is valuable, but beyond that they also have very useful properties. Platinum is an amazing catalysis, though that is hardly my specialty... However, it and gold share some very specific properties... One, they are both highly resistant to corrosion, and two, they are very vital in electronics, which is required for virtually anything even back in my day. If I can find some way to make things with it, then I could cobble together some very complex things using this.

I'm not thrilled by the caves, but it'll have to do for now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

You don't have access to carbon/iron in the ship. There's no point in shipping that, it's everywhere. You have access to additives that are required in very small amounts like molybdenum and such, and are available in extremely high purity. I wanted something worth shipping, but wouldn't be terribly useful right now (because of the low roll). Your main benefit is going to be later once you've got a smelter, assuming you want to go there.

The metal seems to be sealed in chambers, and the symbols are similar enough that you recognize them. The containers look like they'll stand quite a bit of time, other than the few that were ruptured in the abrupt landing of the ship. Whatever was going to react already has, so it'll keep. Turning back to the pirate ship, Li is pointing some kind of broadcast antennae at it, and playing with something on her wrist. "Well, my electronic system is having a time and a half trying to crack the password on it. Give it a few days, and we'll have access to it. We could also force the door, but they were pirates, and I don't trust them not to booby trap the ship."

The cave system, after investigating around it, seems to have a thing supply of water dripping down, and a taste of it reveals a high mineral taste, but there's some light lichen growing in it as well. Bits of survival knowledge resurface, and you know that water which has 'nothing' growing in it is dangerous, but some lichen is hardly the worst thing that could live there. Still, you might feel better building a rain catcher of some kind. So many things to do, and so little time. You have access to shelter, and likely a supply of water. Food would certainly be nice, but you're not quite looking forward to cannibalism of the pirates.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

I mean, 11 is more average than low, but okay. Still he's expecting the pirates to be crawling all over this sooner rather than later, as this was the last spot they know he was at, so he wants to get anything that would be useful away from it.

"Think you can get access to the engines? If they drop by in the next few hours, I might be able to give them quite the surprise if I can get access to them," I suggest. This is, of course, assuming they are using a neutron drive, which does seem likely if it is a space ship, unless they have been supplanted by entirely different technology.

"We should be fine for water if we boil it and kill any micro-organisms in it. The lichens mean there shouldn't be any dangerous chemicals dissolved in it," I note at the water, trying to figure out what to do next.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

So what is the surrounding territory like? Good vegetation? Possible foraging?

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Well, 11 is barely above a positive. Bellow a ten would have been some kind of volatile material, or something completely useless. Probably ancient artistic relics or something.

Also, was the neutron drive just for FTL grade travel, or was it an enhanced rocket engine as well? I've been giving them atmospheric transit shuttles where the smaller ones are just for getting up into orbit to be picked up by a space only ship that has the FTL system. Mostly so they don't have to fight the gravity well with the entire ship and to keep your character away from FTL engines.

Foraging question answered?

She gives the ship a once over, noting the labeling on the engines. The hull seems to have been patched once or twice, and it's definitely the same self 'healing' material as the fuel tank, but the engines look like standard rocket aero splkes. If the system that Li had on her ship are typical shuttles, 'typical shuttles!', then it probably doesn't have an advanced system, and simply has a simple fuel refiner/reactor/solar system so that it can 'self supply' fuel once deployed. While less mass efficient than some other systems, this at least has the advantage of being easy to maintain as well as making it easier to bring fuel back up to the system. Of course, that also means you could probably sabotage it fairly easily.

Li agrees with you, although she seems less at home in the jungle than you first thought she might be. Possibly because she was only looking for 'dangerous' things instead of survival supplies. Investigating more thoroughly on food supplies, you manage to find a couple of smaller game trails, bigger than squirrels but smaller than hogs. The plants seem similar to earth plants, whether through convergent evolution or life seeding, a mix of trees and low bushes, although they seem to favor a more reddish color than the intense green you're familiar with. Looking up, many of them have clusters of what appears to be fruits, resembling citrus plants more than anything else, a tough outer skin with a squishy body. Some of them are rather pungent, even without opening them. The smaller bushlike plants seem to have a mix of tubers, berries and edible portions. Assuming none of it will make you shit your intestines out. Li follows along as you poke and prod the various plants, trying to take mental notes.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Meh, I didn't have a problem with the result, just didn't know why you called average 'low'.

Neutron drives are standard space engines, not FTL, though they are compatible with FTL highways. Not sure about getting off planet with them, so they might need additional boosters to get into orbit.

Yeah it does.

The greatest issue with a neutron drive is, quite simply, that it uses neutrons. Being of neutral charge yet one of the heavier atomic particles, high-powered neutron radiation is quite nasty, so removing some safety limiters and rewiring it so it consumes way too much fuel at once. The end result is that instead of producing a stream of thrust with neutrons, turning these engines on will release a burst of high speed neutrons that will sterilize anything within about twenty-five meters like a small neutron bomb... Just in case they decide to come back for the ship.

"Hey now, at least we won't starve to death. Looking over my choices, I'll sample the plants slowly, seeing which one causes digestion issues. As for the animals, that'll likely be our staple food for now. Meat itself is usually not poisonous. Even things like the famous pufferfish only become 'poisonous' when the glands start leaking into the surrounding meat. As long as you only eat the meat and are careful in removing any organs/glands, the only issue you have to face is parasites or things like heavy metal poisons... though if they have those, then the things they feed on or the water they drink also has it, so it's really how far down the chain we'll get poisoned by that.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

To me, it makes a lot more sense if the ship designed for re-entry is a lot smaller than even the inter system ships, as the stresses and such that it's going to have to take are radically different than normal vacuum operations. Self healing nanomaterials are common, but the kind of thermal/pressure shielding for re-entry is a lot more weight than a larger ship would need. I'm picturing most space ships to be in the 200-500 meter range for standard purposes.

Either way, I figure a Neutron drive for their prime mover, and then 'standard' chemical reaction thrusters for maneuvering and moving around in atmo. Based on your description, they'd probably rocket up to high atmo and then kick in the Neutron drive once they're tilted over and trying to reach orbital velocity.

Li gives you a smile at that, a very cruel, and aggressive smile, before she manages to click open their engine compartment. While the aerospikes are visible outside, there's the core of neutron drive within. A quick bit of finagling, and you've got the system rigged. If anybody tries to take off of the planet, they'll get up before irradiating themselves and then have a nice time floating in orbit as they dissolve in their irradiated juices.

(Luck:2) The first fruit you open up wafts out a powerful stench that nearly makes you both vomit. Doing what you can to get rid of it, you realize at least some of the juices have gotten on your hands and you're now smelling rancid. Li refuses to stand near you, moving upwind and being careful to stay that way. You make a careful note of the plant, which does seem to be easy enough to recognize. It might be useful later, assuming you could avoid puking up whatever you'd eaten first. (Luck:12) When Li opens the next one, careful to do so away from her, nothing special occurs. Taking a whiff, she seems to think it's okay. A slight taste, and she suggests that it's rather bland, but that's far from a serious concern right now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Yeah, a small space ship designed to never enter the atmosphere being around 200 meters on the small end makes sense to me... I mean you do need to have an oxygen scrubber and either a bunch of food and water reserves or a recycling plant, both of which would take up quite a bit of room, in addition to living quarters.

Yeah, though that wouldn't exactly be floating in orbit when they get hit by the neutron burst, as they'd be re-entering the atmosphere proper sooner rather than later.

"No mercy for those trying to kill us," I comment as I finish up, "Besides, if they're going to deny us this ship, then I'm sure as hell denying it to them.

I choke down the vomit reflext. I'm highly resistant to visual disgust, but something about smells make me unable to stomach them. God that's nasty. I'll have to keep an eye open for a stream or something to wash off in. "Bland or not, we got to try that... We got potentially edible vegetation now... so I say we begin hunting."

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

A 200 m ship would probably not even have a shuttle unless specially designed for it, likely a short range ship. 350m is probably what I'm thinking is the 'standard' ship.

The way I picture these shuttles, they use their normal rockets to get a few dozen kilometers straight up, and then they tilt over and fire the neutron drive to bring themselves up to orbital speed. Most of the energy goes into the angular velocity of a launch not the vertical climb, but firing a neutron drive straight down into a planet seems... unwise. Once into the upper atmo, where there's nothing alive and they're pointing it sideways, the scattering and shielding of the atmo should protect the planet itself. This would be the point where the neutron drive would have a problem, assuming they don't just pilot it by remote or something.

Li won't approach you, but sets a few of the fruits down on the ground and then moves a few steps away as she begins to separate out the different fruits and vegetables by appearance, creating different piles to try at a later date. You find a stream relatively quickly and manage to get some fruit into your system. Both you and Li show no adverse reactions to this particular fruit, and you add it to the 'safe' pile for now. You could try an additional one, or you could wait to make sure that this is indeed safe.

Li picks up her fancy rifle, and begins to tap at it for a moment. "I don't have that much ammunition for this, although it does have a coil gun mode so if we can make rounds, it'll throw them." The other options involve trying to ambush the prey, or setting traps. Or you could always try to run something down, humans used to hunt like that, right?

I mean... A, they're pirates... and B... if they can pilot it remotely... why haven't they already?

No reason in trying another one type... If one gives me food poisoning I don't want to flip a coin to figure out which one it was.

"Well now... I guess this is where I'll shine... You got a knife?" Running down prey only really works on the savanna where the prey can't hide. Besides, it makes us way to obvious to our pursuers. No, traps are the way to go. Not sure if there are small animals like squirrels and rabbits or if they'll have the same weakness as others, but I should try to make some snare traps to see. For bigger game, slip knot traps are pretty easy to make, though won't hold big game the size of deer for long.

True, but I figure most of the shuttles were new and well built at some point. Their main ship is either busy, or has been destroyed, so there's no one to activate the remote. When the next batch of pirates, or possibly when someone at another possible landing site tries to group them all together, they'll do it.

Also, how hard did you want this scifi? Forcefields and shit, or more nanotech oriented weapons?

"Several." Li says, bringing out a monster combat knife and several smaller blades for throwing or general utility. They'll make excellent stabbing tools, although catching one in the thigh because you didn't pay attention would make you miserable. You rummage around, finding small vines and branches that you think will work. Having gotten this far, you have the choice to show Li how to do it now, send her hunting, or have her do something else if you so desire.

Or... they were cobbled together from spare parts.

I don't mind forcefields per say, but that'd be limited to like capital ships, or cities(Was actually thinking the Church's observation post would be surrounded by one to prevent unauthorized contact with the locals) Too power hungry to see in the field.

I pick a utility knife for now. While I'd like the combat knife should I actually need to kill anything, at this point the control I get from a smaller blade will make my work go quicker. As for Li, I'm not comfortable with going to far away at this point. If one of us gets lost, god knows how long it'll take to find each other, so best to stick together and have her help me.
