Bret Siegal
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Name: Bret Siegal
Gender: Male
Starter: Salandit (Female) (Post collar retrieval) https://static1.e621.net/data/sample/45/e5/45e56aaa295f3c8de40e0ec8c6ed384d.jpg
Equipment: Basic Town Map, Pokédex, 1 potion, 10 Pokéballs, 5 bags of Pokémon feed, 5 days rations, water flask, Pokéball belt, backpack, phone, Trainer ID, wallet.
Pokédollars: 1000
Appearance: https://e621.net/post/show/1395862

Bret would find himself at the edge of the northern forest from his hometown of Rock (Towns are named after Pokémon types in this region). The forest wasn't anything special in of itself, which meant that there were few trainers who would go there either for catching Pokémon, or doing any kind of job. This, made it the ideal location for Bret's graduation test, where he had to find some form of contribution to the lab back in Rock. Be it a Pokémon of an unusual color or behavior, or the discovery of an old ruin or treasure. Pretty much any discovery, no matter how small would count, letting him graduate from the academy and officially get his trainer ID certified beyond it's current, provisional status. With his hometown Rock behind him, and the norther forest in front of him, his adventure began.

Bret stretched himself for a moment. This was it. If he could find anything that would be of interest the professor, he would get his ID and finally be a trainer in his own right. Able to go out and explore the entire region with only his pokemon at his side. He just wished he knew exactly what to look for. As it was, all he could do was keep his eyes peeled for anything that caught his attention, but he certainly wouldn't find it sitting here thinking either. Feeling reasonably limber now, he began stalking carefully through the forest undergrowth. It wouldn't help his search any if he alerted all Pokemon that he was coming unless he wanted all the unusual ones to scatter. He didn't have to worry about any ruins or treasure fleeing, but what were the chances something like that was just sitting out here waiting for him to stumble upon it?

Bret would find much of what would have been expected in a forest, which is to say a lot of common Pokémon, like Rattatas which ran away at the sight of him, Kakunas hanging in the trees, unable to move, and surprisingly, a lost Spinda that was seemingly walking in circles... very large circles spanning a big part of the forest as it was following its own footsteps.

If Bret wanted to settle for something mediocre, the Spinda would likely do. However, a more interesting option would be a small abandoned lumber shack, located next to a cliff.

Bret looked over everything he could find. Most of it was pretty standard for a forest. There was a strange Spinda walking in large circles. Was it under confusion? The tracks looked like it had been at it for a while. Perhaps that could be worth bringing in, but he wasn't quite convinced that would be good.

Seeing the abandoned shack, he considered it. There could be something interesting abandoned in such a structure, but he wasn't sure. Taking another look at the Spinda, he figured it would be wandering in circles for a bit longer. Thinking 'why not', he walked over to the shack sure that he could always come back for the Spinda later. Stalking closer, he tried to look through any windows or holes in the walls to get an idea of what was inside before he entered.

The one window Bret found would be covered in dust, grime and some poop from bird Pokémon. However, glancing inside, or looking at the shack in general made it apparent that it was abandoned. Inside he would be able to catch the outlines of a chair and a table, the table having broken down, while the chair seemed fine, although probably brittle at this point. There also seemed to be at least 2 more rooms he couldn't see into, but if it was really abandoned, walking inside would likely clear up any questions he might ask himself about what they contained. The fact that the door was closed shut with a rusted to hell padlock, and the hinges on it were caked in rust, suggested that there likely weren't any Pokémon hiding inside, although it also meant it might prove challenging to get inside for Bret as well.

Seeing that the building was clearly abandoned, Bret figured there was no reason not to poke around. Maybe the previous owner had something interesting tucked away. Looking at the rusted padlock, he figured he needed a way through this. The old wood of the door would probably burn easily, but he might burn down the shack with it. Then he got an idea. Pulling Salandit's ball he tossed it. "Alright girl, use poison gas on that lock." Salandit's were supposed to be able to poison steel types, so he figured it would have some effect on some rusty old lock like this. Once she'd gotten a good puff of poison over it, he'd wait a few seconds before giving the door a solid kick to either snap the metal lock or break the rotted wood around it while making sure not to accidentally touch the lock in case any of Salandit's poison remained.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Roll for breaking the lock. 1d20 roll. Above 10 = success. Roll 16= success.

I will use rolls pretty randomly when I feel they fit, I don't really have a system.

The idea was quite decent, and it didn't take much for the lock to practically fall apart. Amusingly enough, the poison dissolved all the dust, while leaving the metal underneath unscathed. However, the rust had long eaten away at the metal, and without the rust keeping the lock together, it fell apart, resulting in the door buckling under its own weight, falling over with a loud slam against the floor, kicking up a great amount of dust, making the Salandit sneeze, incidentally incinerating most of the dust, clearing up the view and singing Bret slightly with the flames as well.

With a grunt, Bret shoved the heel of his shoe into the door just a bit below and to the side of the lock watching as it fell apart. The blasted thing was so old, the rust was actually holding it together. He jumped when he heard the sneeze only barely jumping out of the way of the burst of flames. "Hey girl, watch the fireworks. This is an old building. I'm okay with burning it down but not until after we've explored it first." He picked her up setting her on his shoulder as he stepped into the now relatively cleaner main room. He considered a quick glance into each room but decided that if he was going to look into one, he might as well investigate thoroughly before peeking into the other. He'd head to whichever was closer, or the one on the right if they both looked equally close.

His partner had the decency to look embarrassed at the accidental ember from sneezing as Bret told her to watch it.

As for exploring the building, there wasn't really much to explore. It seemed that it was a simple 3 room building with one big, and two smaller rooms. From what Bret could see, the bigger room had once been a combination of a kitchen, judging by the pantries and counter, while the rest of the room had served as a common room. Opening the door to the first small room, would reveal a broken bed frame and a fallen over closet. The floor was littered with broken glass.

Bret chuckled at his Salandit's embarrassment. "It's alright, just try to be more careful about accidental attacks in the future."

Looking over the first room there really wasn't much there, and the next room didn't look any more promising, and he really didn't feel like stepping all over broken glass without some sign that he was going to find something. With hope of finding something of interest dwindling, he made his way over to the last doorway. He was already here, so it was still worth looking into the last room before calling this whole shack a bust and grabbing that Spinda.

The last room seemed to be a kind of storage room/closet, as it contained a few moldy boxes, a freeze box that surprisingly didn't stink, and a small broom, bristled with frayed twigs. The broom seemed to be an old, home-made one.

Bret's Salandit curiously went up to the brom, sniffing it before picking it up and bringing it back over to Bret, as if trying to tell him something about the broom.

Looking at the last room, Bret felt he reached the end of the line. Just a storage room, and everything looked like it was probably just old, rotted food. He wouldn't be finding anything of value here.

Turning to make his way back outside, he stopped as he heard something clatter to the ground turning to see Salandit dragging the broom to him. Kneeling down, he grabbed the handle. "What's this for, girl?" His thoughts returned to the glass in the previous room. Was his Pokemon encouraging him not to give up just yet? "Alright, if you think this is work looking into, I'll give it a shot." Armed with the cleaning impliment, he returned to the other room brushing around the glass for anything of interest buried under the layer of broken glass.

Much to Bret's disappointment, there wasn't anything noteworthy underneath the broken glass, but more floor. Although, with it out of the way, it was now reasonably easy to enter the room and inspect the wardrobe and bed frame without risking ruining his shoes. However, while Bret had been sweeping the floor clean, his Salandit had decided to explore the storage room.

Seeing nothing special under the glass, Bret figured there was no reason not to check out the wardrobe and bed for anything unusual after all that work. If those didn't turn up anything of interest, he'd head back to the storage room and see what Salandit was up to back there. Something certainly must have her attention if she didn't follow him back.

Returning to the storage room, Bret would find that Salandit indeed seemed to have found something as she was scratching at the edge of the freezer box which Bret had previously neglected to look over, like he had most things in the room.

Looking back in the supply room, Bret's a bit surprised to find her nosing around the freezer. He hadn't paid it much mind after he noticed the mold on the boxes. "What are you poking at, girl? There can't be anything you'd actually want to eat in that old thing." A little curious himself, he opened it up to see just what about the old thing was holding her attention so bad.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Intelligence roll 1d20 = 1. Fail. Another Intelligence roll 1d20 =

Opening the freezer box, Bret would find not what he had been expecting. Instead of spoiled, rotten and molding products, the freezer box was filled nearly to the brim with gravel, and despite having opened the Freezer box, his Salandit would be scratching along the edge of the freezer box by the floor.

Opening the icebox, he was surprised to see that it was full of gravel rather than food. He wondered who had filled it up like that and why. Noticing Salandit was still scratching away, it became clear she was concentrating on something under the box rather than its insides. With all this gravel, he figured it'd be pretty heavy to just move about. "Hey girl, help me dig the gravel out of here. Then we can move it aside and see what has your attention."

Bret's Salandit would look at him as soon as he began speaking, before responding with an excited cry and jumped up into the open freeze box and begun digging through the gravel, making a mess of the storage room floor, and making a lot of noise as the gravel clattered to the ground and bounced along the wooden floor. Together, it would take about 20 minutes for them to empty the freeze box enough to easily move it, revealing a trapdoor set into the floor, having been covered entirely by the freeze box.

Bret's Salandit would look to him proudly, expecting praise for a job well done.

Bret did what he could to help her dig out some of the gravel. Whatever secret this thing was hiding had her very excited, and it was hard not to feel that excitement himself. Here he was not knowing what he was about to encounter as he went into the unknown. This was what he imagined his journey would be about.

Once the freezer could be moved, he shoved it aside. It was a bit surprising to find a trapdoor underneath the icebox. A trapdoor underneath a freezer box full of gravel. Someone was certainly going to great lengths to try to hide this thing. Seeing that Salandit was fishing for praise, he gave her a nod. "You did a good job, girl. I never would have found this without you." He scritched her neck and upper chest just the way she seemed to like for a few moments. "Now let's see what it was so important to hide down here." He turned back to the trap door moving to pull it open.
