Karina plays with the baby as you talk with her, seeming to keep the attention of the little munchkin. "My brand of stealth revolves around bending light around us, lower levels leave a bit of distortion, and higher levels make the distortion smaller. You also need a bit of light magic to actually be able to see, but I can cover that myself with my natural abilities. Light magic can also be used to counteract it, which is another advantage of stacking the stealth spells on top of each other. If you know what you're doing, you can even try to cancel the magic by throwing out the countering magic in a direction. I've heard there's ways around it that certain animals like bats have figured out, but I don't know how that works."

"Master Johan, I have added several independent systems to manage the guards and several components of house management. Before, I could no longer properly control my golems, instead having to rely on the integrated spells and controls, and simply telling them what I needed done. Unless intruders engage in several coordinated strikes, these hidden control nodes will be able to keep the house operating even if my own cores are destroyed. This is the primary reason I consumed so many of my Alchemical core stock." Hestia seems to have taken deep umbrage with having been disabled.

"Echolocation..." I mutter at Karina's suggestion, prompting several ideas. I put them on hold as Hestia starts adding to the conversation.

"That does explain several things... Thank you for your initiative... though hopefully that will be an unnecessary preemption. We'll see what we can do to replenish your core supply."

Hestia was extremely unhappy with being disabled like that, and it fit her character to immediately take steps to prevent it as best she was able at the time. I'm thinking I'll have her be easily able to apply minor adaptions to her existing knowledge, but outside the box thinking is still beyond her.

"I apologize for consuming so much of the stock without permission. The new control modules hidden throughout the house can used to control new model golems as well if you think of newer magical components you wish to have added, however each model you wish to be produced without explicit control will require a high level core. The house should be well guarded from now on, and the other defenses we have discussed can be added at a later date." Hestia seems to have a wide variety of knowledge on maintaining a house, go figure, and some knowledge of magical abilities. Karina knows her own spells, but only as a user, rather than the operating theories. You could ask Ayla what she knows about creating things that hear...

"No, that is a good use of it," I disregard Hestia's apology, "Defense is one of the most important concerns. And yes, I would like to know what has been set up so far... I do have some ideas I wish to discuss as well."

"Very well. The house has several mana corridors running throughout it, which draw energy from the sun skin on the roof and other sources. I have set up six additional golem control cores, five primary controllers, and one overall controller. The overall controller can communicate with five cores and give them orders, and I have setup the enchantment in such a way that new weaponry or detection devices can be added without creating new cores, however I will have to add it myself, as it is merely an intelligent core, not something on the level of a spirit or monster. The five cores are hidden in the four corners, and one near the entrance for full coverage. Each of these can control up to ten golem bodies simply, or five more directly if planning is necessary. There are more than one hundred golems currently on the property, but the bulk of them are disabled, and most are not combat variants. I currently have four combat golem variants, as well as several different utility variants. For combat variants, I favored human and spider set of forms, with armored plating embedded in the surface as well as structural elements resembling bones." You recall the complex construction of the body that Ayla now inhabits.

"At any given time, there are twenty five active guards, four at the front entrance, five at side entrances, and the remainder on patrol in randomized patterns. When we secure additional high level golem cores, I can create a control module that simply monitors everything in the house, and passes along points of interest to the guard cores. Is this satisfactory?"

"Good work. Redundant systems are very important for these sort of things," I nod, "I am curious if you know of any cores that can produce high pitch sounds beyond the hearing of humans, or preferably all the civilized races. I'm thinking of creating a network of these and 'ears' that can detect changes in the noises."

"Thank you. I am unfamiliar with a way to do that, I suspect a kinetic core would be able to do so. I am not sure why you would want such a thing however." So, they don't understand echolocation. That does raise the question of if it's easier to make the sound or the ears themselves. Would a normal Alchemy core do the job? Maybe you should have her hold off on making that 'intel' core that she was talking about until you're sure on what abilities you're going to try and chase down. Of course, the downside to that would be if someone comes a calling soon and you're waiting for the top of the line unit to come in. Hestia did say that she could make the control core smart enough to handle new systems, but unless you experiment, you won't know how high of a level of core you'll need.

Okay, I don't have any specific plans. What I'm thinking is that Hestia has any easy time making stuff if she has the right source material to work with. For the echolocation, maybe you'll have to go questing for something where bat/dolphin monsters hang out? That seems most reasonable, yes?

"Do you have a large empty room with no furnishings? I can explain the point simply there," I ask. Regardless whether or not the ears will be precise enough to specifically locate something, even if they are sensitive enough to notice an echo, that would tell us that there is something there, and allow us to move from there. We can work on refining it after we have a prototype.

I mean, that seems super specific. Not much work to do there. I mean we're talking about making sound, why would it be so hard? A literal single piece of material the size of your thumb can do this. I'm talking about a dog whistle in case you are wondering.

Maybe I misspoke. The hard part would be processing the echolocation data. Still, if you don't want to do it that way, we can figure something else out. If you want to just move on with it, go ahead and write out what you want to work.

"One moment Master Johan... I have cleared a room. I will lead you to it." She guides you to a room, having one of the maid-bots open the door for you and let you in. The room is decent sized and the maid-bot follows you in.

He doesn't need to function as well as an eye. Simple being able to notice that something is invisible is already a huge advantage. Basically his idea is that if these things detect an echo it sends a signal, which can be attempted to be confirmed with other sensors, which would indicate whether or there are invisible intruders. The accuracy can be something added later.

Looking over the room, I nod. I make a very sharp and short noise, listening for the echo. It'll be fractions of a second after, but I've managed this with a clap before when I was human, so it is possible. "That secondary noise. That is what is referred to as an echo. Easiest way of thinking of it is that the air around is a clear liquid. Noise is like the ripples caused by disturbing it, and if that hits something, another wave, weaker than the first will come back. It's this principle that I am talking about utilizing."

"One moment... Please repeat that?" She asks you, and when you do, she seems to focus in on it a bit more. "I think I understand Master Johan. The sound creates a slightly different pitch when there is something within the room, or when anything is present to be mirrored off of. I will conduct experiments if that is acceptable. I believe I can add this function." She seems to be chewing on the idea more than experimenting. Even if all she does is create something that notices when a pitch changes, it'll still be useful.

Not exactly what I meant, but close enough to have the same effect. "Indeed, according to my information from Karina, stealth cores can't affect sound so this will at the very least, allow us to know if such a person is close by."

REJOICE FOR I HAVE INTERNET AGAIN! Sorry about the delay, I moved to another state at the beginning of the week for a job that's hopefully less brutal on my sanity. I did not like who I was becoming at my last one.

"I understand. Is there anything in particular I should do upon finding them? I have documents confirming sleeping gasses and other disabling spells, but I have no access to them currently. If you wish to have less lethal options available, you will need to procure them for me. As a note, I have found some literature documenting that there are stealth cores that do muffle sound, but it requires a radically different approach, and seems to favor kinetic magic rather than light magic. Will there be anything else for the moment or would you like to visit your child?" Hestia seems like a maid almost. Somebody reads too much.

"Nonlethal would be ideal, but at this point, I am uncertain if we can safely subdue or contain them, so we might want to consider that in the future, and just kill them at the moment to be sure. I'll see what I can non-lethal methods I can secure." I pause for a moment. To be truthful I'm still sort of confused about the 'my child' thing... It all happened so fast that I view her as Karina's child... but that won't do. A child deserves two parents... even if one of them is technically an object. "Yeah, I think that will be all. Is Renara still with her mother still?"

"Are there any particular trap styles you would prefer? With a child in the house, I suspect things would be best if I did not included any pit traps within. As is, if I detect an unauthorized presence, I shall simply send golems to deal with any intruders." she tells you, and that does bear further thought. "Mistress Karina and Renara are still together, although they have moved to the master bedroom I have prepared for the two of you." She informs you.

If you head there immediately, you'll find Karina softly singing to Renara who is beginning to fall asleep. "Well, it's nice to see you again. I hope you're not planning to plant another one in me, at least not yet. Give a woman some time to recover." She husks to you. At first, it sounds like she's trying to seduce you again, although it seems more like she's trying not to wake the baby.

"Ideally we want traps that can be remotely disabled and enabled so if she is near them they are rendered inert. However, I am unsure what would be the best for that sort of thing." With that I begin heading back to check up on my daughter.

"All up to you," I reply softly, trying not to wake her as well, "As I recall, you wanted to take my body for a spin... How is she doing?"

"She's lovely. A few dancing lights and some milk, and she's ready to take a nap. Now, let's step out and discus things unless you want to watch her." Karina tells you, more focused on letting the baby sleep than on actually discussing anything.

I did come here to check up on her, but at the same time, I don't want to wake her. Sighing, I nod... well bob, "Yeah, let's let her sleep."

Actually no not really. The main character is trying to make his electric carriage to sell for big bucks, and they are getting a baby sitter, but there was no real plans moving forward.

"So... what are our plans from here?" I ask after an awkward pause, "We managed to find a home, but what we need now is money... I have a few ideas, but I'd like to hear your suggestions."
