Oh sure, I'm just trying to hammer out the limits of the local magic system.

Poking at the memories of the different flavors of magic, it more resembles Blood magic than necromancy, although it has bits of both in it. It's an absurdly complex mix, you're not sure why it's so hard to pin down the type of magic this is. What the hell has elements of blood magic, necromancy, but can only do basic charms. If it was advanced necromancy, wouldn't they have killed Jillian and used her as a puppet? You'd definitely smell the difference, but would they know that?

Jillian thinks for a moment. "On the Bright's Wrath... after we saw each other in the lounge but before we got back to port." She's had a charm spell working on her that long? No wonder she was willing to stab someone she loved in the chest. That does seem odd, but you recall capturing a 'leader' of the 'pirates' who put up very little fight. Could they have been a mage or something in disguise?

In all likelihood, this mage isn't powerful in necromancy enough to create an undead puppet.

"So... we got two options... Either we got a spy on board the Bright's Wrath crew... Or our old friend the pirate captain wasn't quite as contained as he first appeared," I comment, "I'm going back to the Bright's Wrath then to the captain... I'm sure he'll be happy to see me... Anyways, do either of you want to come with me?"

Both of them nod and form up on you as you head back to the ship. Or more accurately, head to the prison underneath the castle where he's now kept. Heading into the prison, you're greeted with a disturbing sight. The injuries you'd inflicted had been mostly patched up, but he's delirious and babbling, blood running from his eyes and ears. Was he simply a conduit or a trap? Whoever this is that's attacking, they're far far too capable with magic to be a local human.

Investigating and getting closer, you recognize the same bits of foul magic that was affecting Jillian, although this seems more...decayed. Like bits of a leftover spell that were starved of magic. You've seen humans going through addiction withdrawal before, and this is close, but still very different. You can't feel any of your own magic here, so this man was likely burnt as a patsy of some kind.

Okay... so I was unclear... He wanted to check the ship to see if he could pick up any scent of the magic, then visit the captain. I wasn't expecting him to be on the ship.

I reach over and touch him, trying to disrupt any ongoing magical effect placed on him. He's useful alive... if he actually is... Perhaps the necrotic energy is coming from the fact that rather than trying to kill and puppet Jillian... the captain here had that happen to him... leaving too little to try to leapfrog to Jillian. "Well, this is definitely the cause... though I hesitate to call him the source," I announce, though I doubt anyone isn't on the same page.

Whoops, no there wasn't anything interesting on the ship.

You flex your mana, and the drakonic mana flows through his head and you see... something collapse on itself. He stops bleeding and babbling, although it seems he's more than a little brain fried. He sags to the ground, barely conscious.

Judith nods, "agreed, this wasn't all just a trap to attack us, but a few contingencies here and there... whoever this is, they're far more clever than I'm comfortable with. I will be making some notes before we go see the Oracle, she'll know what to do." Jillian seems more inclined to tear the mans head off for infecting her with something.

I figured, but he's not a hundred percent convinced that there isn't a spy among the ranks... as quite frankly he finds the pirates movements just a little suspicious. So he'd sweep for that as well.

"Leave him be... What ever is left of his mind might come to be useful... afterwords feel free to kill him, or just break a few bones," I point out, standing up, "We managed to at least solve part of the mystery, but I fear we don't have more leads... Still, I think anyone who got in direct contact with him should be checked to see if they have the same issue as well... Actually, Jillian how close did you even get to this person? Because we might need to widen that to the whole crew otherwise..."

Jillian listens, before responding, "I interrogated him in the brig, I didn't see anything though." Leading you back out to the ship and investigating, you spot nothing but a faint trail. There's a brief surge of residual magic, but it's barely registering even on your own senses. Whatever the spell was, it seems to have jumped from the 'pirate' to Jillian here. Questioning reveals that the prisoner didn't start to go insane until fairly recently, likely this morning. That would coincide with you shattering the spell, perhaps he was used as some kind of control relay and the spell backlash caught him? If your sister were here, she could figure it out, she knew this stuff much better.

You track down a few of the officers, and none of them have more than a minor reaction to you touching their head. Other than being slightly weirded out at the weirdo touching their head. You clear most of the officers and those who were in contact with the prisoner, and it seems that Jillian was the only one who was charmed. Considering her position, it would make sense if either she or Judith had been the target of the attack having both access to the royal family and enough skill to actually do something with it.

Judith gives you a slight hug of comfort, although Jillian is still clearly disturbed at being manipulated like that. The two of them meet and quickly discuss their short term plans, with Judith moving back toward you and smiling as she grabs your hand and begins to drag you back toward an area of the castle you're not as familiar with. Well, you wouldn't be, if not for Loren's memories. Judith flashes some identification of some kind and the two of you make your way to Elizabeth's lab. Looking around, it hasn't changed much since the last time you were here. The sealed room that isolates her work is closed, and it looks like it'll be a few moments before she finishes whatever she's doing.

A quick poke around reveals that she did indeed do some science to the scales you 'donated' to her, they're hooked up to a wide variety of small woven crystal contraptions that seem to be manipulating them. The exception is a single scale in another device which is slowly adding a rigid crystal around the scale. Loren's memories offer no clue as to what the devices do that you couldn't guess as some variant of sensor or fabrication component. Finally, Elizabeth exits, pulling a set of googles off of her face and holding an ultra pure crystal mold. Holding it up, light glances off of shapes inside of it, shapes that Loren recalls control the magic.

"Oop, I wasn't expecting you this early." Elizabeth says to the two of you. "Here, try this." She holds out the small crystal, and Loren doesn't recognize the shape of the spell. It could be the spell you vaguely recall Judith suggesting and writing down a description of. It seems both of them are waiting to see how you react to this.

With Judith dragging me off to Elizabeth's lab... it seems a bit suspicious... like she's doing something for her own amusement that very well might come at my expense. I take the crystal as I ask, "And how exactly do you want me to 'try' it?"

"Don't feed the input, just you should be able to pump a lot of mana through it now." Elizabeth tells you. Recalling your lessons from earlier, most of the crystals have a power supply and various control feeds that allow you to direct the effect in one direction or the other. But, they were clearly built for the general human supply of magic, even if that included someone like Theresa. Turning the crystal over carefully, it seems to have the shape that you'd associate with a gauntlet mounted spell, likely either an attack spell or a defensive one. Careful probing with low energy shows the high energy mana feed you expected, although there's a second one as well. There's three small control nodules, but what each does is less clear.

Without thinking, you almost head toward the testing room, as your exploration of the part distracted you and Loren's memories surfaced enough that you knew what was expected.

Unlike many of the ones you've tried before, this one sits there, soaking up the mana you supply. And soaking and soaking. You're impressed, the high purity of the crystal actually managed to stand up to what you can put out. The other three nodes are there, and you now have the option to play with them. One of them is a simple 'trigger' mechanism and feeding it will cause the spell to 'snap' and unload all of the mana inside of it. Probably best to point it away from your face though.

Firing the trigger, there's a burst of complex magic within the crystal before the tangled spell fires out and hits a range that resonates with one of the control nodes. Based on that and what you've figured out so far, this one is likely a range setting. Watching the spell fly, it suddenly stops and begins to unwind. You see several types of magic, conjuration as well as warding and wind as a wall of ice explodes outward. The smaller node maintains a small link to the spell, continuing to feed it power to keep up the wards. When it finally taps out from what you fed it, the ice begins to dull and soften. Inspecting the spell crystal, it does not seem to have suffered any damage, although you do notice a slight thermal shift in it, the thing struggling to handle the kind of mana you can put through it. The last few nodes, if your experience with your other crystals is any indication, are likely controls on thickness of the ice and other settings you could fiddle with later.

Returning, Elizabeth looks at you with a look of pride and you feel Loren try to congratulate her. Making a crystal able to handle the kind of mana you can throw around, and do so with a complex spell is no mean feat. After you discuss it with the two of them, you create a wishlist of spells, what Loren remembers of Elizabeth, she'd enjoy the challenge. You've also got your scales being experimented on to question. Or you can decide to move along and get with Judith to prepare for the trip to the oracle.

I'm still trying to get use to having... spell equipment available to me, so I have no idea if the nodes are going to get used inside of combat... Likely I'll just find a setting I like after playing around with it and leave it. Still, this is exactly what I was hoping for. Turning to Elizabeth I give a grin, and pat her on the head, "Nice work... Though I need to ask, it's having some issues keeping up with me... I don't have to worry about it breaking or exploding on me, right?"

"By the way, why were you so interested on getting your hands on some of my scales... or perhaps to phrase it better, what are you doing with them?" I ask, wanting to get to know Elizabeth's interests a bit better than simple second hand from Loren.

"Not this one, no. But I can't promise what other people make won't explode if you try to force your full supply of mana through them. You'll need to stick to grade 2 fabricators, at a minimum and those will likely have a shortened life span. You'll need to come back here to use the grade 1 fabricator if you want anything that will last a while." Looking through your equipment, Elizabeth gives a sniff, but allows that you picked decent equipment for what you had to offer.

Your attack spells were nice varieties, although they would likely crack and splinter under your full magical might, so getting them replaced would be worthwhile, at least long term. From what you recall, the wind spells were... not useless, they did an excellent job for what they were, although they were at their limit and began to crack. Jillian isn't here to offer her feedback. Of course, you can fly on your lonesome, so it's not like those crystals couldn't keep. Judith mentions the locals have a strong preference toward magma and lightning weapons, although you've seen a large number of people use the 'Avalanche' and 'Hurricane' combinations Judith first used on you. A suit that wouldn't get shredded when you shape shifted would also be nice, and if it could handle either of the body shifting spells, more goodies for you.

Elizabeth thinks them over for a bit before settling on a few options that might be of use to you. She can adapt one of the common 'variable spell guns' to something that will accept different spell crystals and simply use you as a power source instead of trying to carefully control mana expenditure like what is issued to common soldiers with good mana supply but lacking control enough to carry spell swords or shields. You'd have to get any spell effects you wanted made here if you don't want them to burn up when you start using them more than once or twice. The shape shifting suit is also a possibility that Elizabeth should be able to get up and working within a day or two. She'll need more time if you want it to have any complex spells planned, as opposed to simply carrying the spell crystals for you. She just wants to know which sounds more interesting to you.

After that, your prompt delights Elizabeth as she launches into some of the more mundane properties of your scales which she finds fascinating, but the really interesting things involve using them as focusing crystals. "When I project an area mana field through the scale using a focus, it creates a small bubble of disruptive mana. It's fascinating, and I just got some requests for just such things to be constructed from Theresa, which is lucky. Unfortunately, almost all of these are now claimed for various projects, but I still have a few to experiment with. I'm building a spell core around this one, it should actually jam any spell effects from triggering within its range once activated! The only spells that might work are those that don't ever leave their crystal housing like the thunder stones." A brief flash of distaste from Loren confirms that they're one of the primary weapons the royal family uses. A very simple weapon, mana goes in, high velocity spell crystal goes out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Good bit of knowledge dump there, take lots of notes.

I do recall something about 'sneaky sneaky fire spells' or something? I'm going to play pretty loose with what is and isn't capable of being done here, so if you do think of any spells, let me know. I'd go for the armor/suit first and then get a magic beam spewing pistol once I thought of some cool spell effects. Talren already kind of can do that sort of thing.

I nod at her explanation that hers are made to last, while standard ones... not so much.

"Can you modify my current suit some more... I think something like the suit Judith used that... I... may have broken when I got here... Anyways, something like that would be nice, where I can change styles from fast to strong... Some more finally tunes wind tiles to allow for more speed or control when I fly would also be nice," I list off some of my idea, "As for spells themselves, I think I'll stick with what I have at the moment and get use to them before I go crazy with them."

Looking over the scales as I listen to her expound on her research, before I start suggesting areas worth testing, "Would it be possible to combine the effects? Where it negates all other effect except for its? If that isn't possible what about a series fire? Where you hit it with anti-magic effect then as soon as it disappears, a secondary effect?"
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

I've been re-reading the old posts... and I can see the 'sneaky sneaky fire spell' but I can't figure out what it is... I think it's just an explosion at a fixed distance away without any visible indicators, so it appears as if it just explodes without warning... hence the 'sneaky' part.

Also... he had a suit tailor made for him already, right? Why would he need to get yet another one.

"Ah, that was you?" Elizabeth looks between the two of you, as Judith blushes slightly at the fact that she got the suit shredded... and likely covered in fluids. "Hm, let me see." Elizabeth begins to rummage through a bucket of spell crystals. "Ahah! Here we go." Elizabeth comes back with a large gauntlet of some kind. Loren vaguely recalls it, and it doesn't seem dangerous. Sliding it onto your hand, it doesn't seem to do much until you start feeding it mana, at which point your hand nearly doubles in weight causing your arm to twitch violently. It's very strange that this magic will affect you without your magical resistance even bothering it. The glove seems to not like you, but whatever effect it's causing is bypassing your magic defense.

"I was worried that you'd resist these spells too, but it seems the [fundamental field manipulation] spells still work on you." Elizabeth is very casual about the fact that she just found an entire branch of magic that seems to ignore your magic resistance. The phrase Elizabeth used means something to Loren though, it's something that only the Oracle seems to know fully, and playing with weight is about the only aspect that people use on a regular basis. Coming out of your bit of memory, Elizabeth is describing the limits of that type of spell, namely that it's really only viable for self contained systems like full body suits. Although they can build weapons that change weight depending on use, a full body effect requires a full body suit. Extending the [field manipulation] has such a massive mana and stress cost, I don't think anything has ever gotten more than say..." she holds her hands out, about shoulder width apart.

"Even so, I don't think the strength enhancement will work on him, and running yourself up to five times your normal body weight is... stressful." Judith adds in, likely having experimented with exact ratios of strength, weight, stone-skin, and thrust elements, which are the basic components of most of Amazon favored suits, Loren's memories inform you. They're popular with hunters as well, although only a few military units favor them, most preferring raw magical storage and versatile spells over the complex skillset involved in mastering that.

Judith likely knows that you're considerably stronger than a normal human, and you could continue moving at five times your body weight even if you'd be slowed down. The strength enhancement that the suit provides is not much better than your own, nor is the stone-skin better than your scales. How much of this you're willing to admit to Elizabeth and Judith, ensuring that it will find its way back to Theresa and her inner circle, is up to you.

At your suggestion of firing off the magical spells in sequence, Elizabeth grins at you. "I thought of that as well! But first, we need to test it, the scale disrupts the magic within the crystal as well, so we need to figure out exactly how much so we can plan the spell shape around it. Are you going to be helping me?" She seems eager to have someone who knows about magic talk to her.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Sorry, I never explained it, but you've got the gist of it. They're popular because of the fact that they're very good sneak weapons, but you have to be damned good with it because you can't guide it or adjust your fire except where it hits. As a result, hunters tend to use them, and very occasionally the military will, but most people don't like them.

Did he get a tailored suit? I thought it was a basic vest and pants tweaked so that it didn't have any healing or boosting spells, I figured you'd want something nice and tight for when Loren shows up. Not that she won't look good in a revealing vest showing off her cleavage.

Also, I know I'm getting into a lot of magic that bypasses your magic defense, but it's part of the way the locals were bred to fight a specific enemy.

"It was... unintentional, I didn't realize that I would disable it's defenses and without them it stood little chance against my claws," I laugh a bit, remembering the event.

Trying the gauntlet on, I grip tight, trying to get control over the twitching, as my brain is considering how to counter this. Pausing for a moment I consider what she said about the area mana field... If I use my scales as a focus... I close my eyes and try to focus mana through my scales, expanding around me. As I try to, I continue the conversation, replying to Judith's assessment, "Sure, the strength might not be viable, but even doubling the weight of a blow can drastically increase just how much it can do," I point out, not really wanting to shift the subject from what isn't practical because of my natural abilities and rather on what might actually work.

"Sure, though I'm not too familar with magic theory... my Mom and little sister are the two who know more about that kind of stuff," I warn her, but am more than happy to spend more time with her and help her out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

'Fight a specific enemy' huh? Well that sounds ominous. Anyways, the field magic is semi-reasonable as if it effects space, for example, then regardless of whatever is within the field resistance to magic, since it never actually comes into contact with it, it can't negate it. It also has significant limitations which means it can't just be abused and has clear ways of countering it.

"Oh, I'm quite familiar with how much added weight will affect a blow. You should spar with Theresa some time." Judith gives her jaw a slight rub. Loren remembers training with Theresa, but that was almost a decade ago. While Loren remembers bits and pieces of various challenges against the throne where Theresa defended the crown, almost all of them involved Loren telling Theresa not to kill her opponent please. You realize that Loren actually has no idea how powerful of a fighter Theresa is beyond 'very'. Recalling when you first met her a few days ago and she begin tearing mana from her surroundings and selecting a weapon, you get the feeling that learning that you were magically resistant factored heavily into which spell crystal she selected, and you have no doubt it was something like a thunderstone or this gauntlet that would let her throw her magical might at you in a way your natural defenses wouldn't guard you.

The cobbled together gauntlet doesn't like when you spread your natural mana field toward it, the effect stuttering and struggling to maintain itself. Despite that, it manages to hold itself together and you get your twitching muscle under control. Careful inspection of the gauntlet shows a 'primary' spell crystal with what looks to be a fairly simple, if very strange, spell within it, and the rest are there to spread and contain the effect so that the raw mana cost doesn't drain the entire supply of mana trying to alter the planet or something ridiculous.

"Oh? Tell me more about your family." Judith is fishing. It's adorable the way she tries to be nonchalant about it, but she desperately wants to know about you.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Yup. A specific enemy with specific defenses against magic. This is why despite a wide variety of different magics, a great deal of the favored ones rely on very specific effects that will be unaffected by things like magical resistance. I trust this also explains why someone like Theresa, upon learning that he's magically resistant and selecting a proper weapon, like a kinetic impactor ('thunderstone') that she can throw at mach 2, would be able to take a stunned and disoriented Talren in a fight.

Also, I've effectively finished with the plot if you'd like to move on.

"My point is even if I can't go up to five times, it'll still be worth it, and it'll allow me to do the idea I was toying with," I explain my reasoning, "By strong I didn't mean strength, per say, rather the weight of the blows." At the comment about fighting Theresa, "That might be fun... but something tells me it won't be as easy as just asking nicely... her being a queen is probably going to complicate setting one up a bunch." Still that would be great fun. I remember all those fights with my sister... It's a great bonding experience for sure.

While I might not be able to form an anti-magic field, at least yet, I do seem to be able to... stabilize it? Pausing, I consider how I might be able to effect my suit with this, and if it might allow me to go above five times and still be able to control it.

"Ah well, there is not too much to tell... More to tell about where I grew up to be honest... Anyways, my family consists of my younger twin sister, Ierin, who is the one who learned magic stuff, my older sister, Ferien, who trained me to fight... and is the one I think you'd get along with Judith," I pause to chuckle, "And finally my mother..."
