You took aim at the officer jumping off the dropship, but your ambition was too high. He managed to jump just as you fired your shot, the bullet missing his helmet by less than an inch. Thankfully on the ground Amira was more ready, and as the officer landed with a thud a bare thirty meters from the prepared XCOM position, her masterkey shotgun roared to life, crumpling his composite armor with a single blast. Natalia and Amy seemed to have hit their stride, the pair of soldiers managing to both score headshots on their bursts of fire aimed at the advent troopers scrambling into position. The intent of taking out vulnerable troops in one shot seemed to work, but it was almost overkill the way both women managed to score perfect hits on the soldiers they were aiming at. Finally, when the three remaining advent got in position by the train cart debris, the turret opened fire from its position, peppering the advent sergeant with a blast of red fire.
The advent reacted first by addressing the threat at their flank, then returning to focus on XCOM. You can see the one of the troopers aim his rifle at the turret, and then he unleashed green plasma fire. The resulting explosion was more like what all your field reports indicated fighting advent would be like, a massively powerful burst of plasma energy that utterly annihilated whatever structure it was aiming at. The turret exploded into a cloud of shrapnel and green mist, liquified metal raining down like hells own thunderstorm.
So it remained a large surprise when the other two advent started firing back downrange at the XCOM troops fifty meters away from them. The orange bolts were certainly menacing in intent, but they weren't destroying cover the ladies were hiding behind. 'Karen! I think they don't want to use their heavy weapons on us!' yelled Amira.
Heavy weapons. That would have been useful. The advent here were still standing in the open, not bothering to scramble to cover. But with another squad coming in and a platoon arriving shortly after, heavier weaponry might be helpful.. especially since the aliens still had the deadly plasma weaponry that won them the early war so easily.
