The village of Senara in the country of Cheliax was quiet enough. It started as a trading post and blossomed into something bigger. It was a popular waypoint for anyone heading into or out of the country due to its position on the border and on the Iseld River. While Cheliax certainly had its enemies, Senara had gone largely unscathed during its many conflicts.
However, the winds of change blow in from Isger, along with the flames of war.
In the middle of the night, a war party of unknown size storms Senara, burning and killing everything they can't loot. The battle is quick. The village is in ruins in less than a few hours. Once slaves are taken and treasure is acquired, everything and everyone else is killed or left for dead. Despite their best efforts, not everyone was lead to slavery or slaughter.
The three of you escaped in the heat of battle, due to being on the south edge of town, and you were only able to take your most valuable possessions before being forced to flee. Even though you may have felt the desire to help the town, it was clear the battle was unwinnable - the enemy numbered at least a few hundred, perhaps many more, and the town's militia was overran almost immediately. The only indication of the identity of the war party comes from a single banner carried by one of the raiding knights - a fiery sword on a black field pointing down, doubtlessly the banner of Isger, a country that's supposed to be a vassal of Cheliax, which would make this an invading rebellion force. But who could say for sure.
Following your harrowing escape, the three of you make your way into the forest until you find the safety of a cave built into an empty hillside. Your group holds out the night there until morning, filled with fitful dreams of the previous night's massacre. The chirping of birds and the crack of sunlight coming through the cave entrance is what wakes you all shortly after dawn. Now it would just be a matter of what to do next. The only thing that's certain is if there's an invading army afoot, your chances of survival would be much higher if you stayed together...

Found abandoned in the woods as an infant, Tasht was raised by an elderly couple after her cries for attention caught their ears and lead them to sought her out. As their story went, Tasht had been found wrapped tightly in a silken scarf in a makeshift manger deep in the woods with her true parents nowhere to be found and not even the slightest bit of evidence of their identity left behind. It was as if they had simply vanished into thin air or, perhaps, they had never existed at all and Tasht had been heaven-sent to provide her new parents with a child to take car of after all their own had left to make their own mark on the world. That's what her parents always told her at least and what reasons did she have to not believe them?
From a young age, Tasht had already began learning her fathers trade, woodworking, and even found she had quite a knack for the surprisingly intricate practises that came with shaping formless chunks of wood into any sort of design, be it furniture, building materials or weapons. Even so, woodworking wasn't enough to hold Tasht's full attention for long as she soon found herself drawn towards the woods she had been found in and the excitement of a hunter's profession. It took many months of begging, but eventually Tasht finally wore her parents down enough until they relented and allowed Tasht to accompany the village's hunters on their next expeditions under the promise they would never let Tasht out of their sight. It was a promise they needn't have made however as Tasht rarely wandered more than a few feet away from any given hunter before she would quickly hurry back and hit them with a barrage of questions on how, why and when to do certain actions. It was during these numerous excursions across many, many summers Tasht found herself learning many useful lessons about the wild and how she could best use the resources provided to her. She found out which herbs could and could not be eaten, how to skin an animal, make a shelter for herself, stalk her prey and, in Tasht's eye's most importantly, how to properly wield the iconic hunter's bow with deadly precision to name but a few of the skills she developed.
As the years went by and Tasht learnt more than enough skills to finally be accepted as a fully fledged hunter for her village, she found herself once again looking for something bigger...something more exciting to occupy her time with. Little did she know her wish was about to be granted in a much more horrifying way than she could ever have wanted or imagined as destruction came to her peaceful little village.

Biography: Rayne was the result of a human woman falling in love with an angel from the upper planes. A beautiful and gentle man, she was told growing up. Her mother idolized the man and spoke of how he rode atop a white charger with a flowing golden mane. He defended the people of their village and said he served all that lived in the light. But one day the stories stopped, Rayne would see her mother clutch a silvery lance that was rend in two by what looked like a large claw. That was her 13 birthday. Soon after the bright young woman that was her mother became cold and distant until one day she disappeared, all the while Rayne trained to become a soldier like the man her mother idolized. 5 years of a being a squire to a lesser knight allowed Rayne to move away from home and become a fully-fledged knight. She looked at her mother, old, ragged, and lifeless still clutching the lance. She laid a blanket over the woman's shoulders before saying wishing her farewell.
From there she would set out and become the ideal that her mother expected of her. A knight of the people, defending them from evil and maybe one day she'd also discover what happened to her father and the mystery around his disappearance.

Cheliax
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
Infernal Cheliax (pronounced CHEL-ee-ax) remains one of the most powerful nations militarily in the Inner Sea region. Its control of the Arch of Aroden, the passage between the Inner Sea and the Arcadian Ocean, also gives it a vital role in much of the region's trade. Nevertheless, as important as the nation may be today, it pales in comparison to its former Imperial glories. Today, in the eyes of most external observers in other parts of the Inner Sea, Cheliax suffers from extreme diabolism and a tyranny which prevent it from truly achieving its full potential. Internal observers, including the new nobility of Cheliax, firmly believe that Asmodeus and Hell serve Cheliax and assist in maintaining the power necessary for Cheliax to assume its rightful role among the leading nations of the Inner Sea.
Isger
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
Isger (pronounced IZ-guhr) is a vassal state of Cheliax. In the eyes of Cheliax it is not so much a sovereign nation as a glorified trade route. Isger lies between two of the most powerful economies of Avistan: the merchant Kalistocracy of Druma to the north and Cheliax to the south. Isger also controls the only gap between the Five Kings Mountains and the Menador Mountains. As a result, Isger has one of the most profitable trade routes in Avistan, running through the centre of it.

The night in the cave was one of resentment for Rayne, her armored fist pounding into the cave walls as she could barely hold back the tears of defeat. 'Why why why!!' Her internal screams shaking her to the core. 'All of those people..dead.. or worse..' The strength drains out of her arms as she rests her head against the cold stone tears streaming from her eyes. Her mind would spin in circles as she recalled the screams of the militiamen and women she'd sworn to protect, when she sounded the retreat there was nothing but panic, people couldnt follow her banner... Slumping against the cave all she looks to the two who did end up along side her, though it felt more by happenstance than anything. An elf and a tiefling... Surely an interesting pair, but at least she recognized their faces.
Her mind was grow quieter and quieter though as the physical and emotional exhaustion took over, her mind still reeling as she fell into a dreamless sleep, only occasionally startling awake to a scream she thought she heard. When dawn broke again Rayne found herself still in her armor, poor etiquette for a knight to say the least, her sleep was terrible as a result, but she needed to get on the move. The elf she was more familiar with, having healed her own wounds at least once or twice, the tiefling less so as she sorta just grimaced at the red-skinned woman, she could feel something deep within her chest just asking to smite the woman, but her knightly vows and willingness to see the good in all people stayed her hand as she slept. She would wait for the two of them to wake up before coming up with any sort of plan.
"Uhh.. the two of you are awake... Is anyone injured?" She asks as she looks at the both of them, grabbing her explorers pack she looks for any rations she could spare and hands them to the two women. "I..i'll be honest i dont know what to do but.. if it's possible we need to head to Longacre, theres a knighthood chapter there, and we need to warn the other villagers."

Elivia Sits with her knees to her chest her arms wrapped around them and her bow and quiver on the cave floor before her, the events of the night playing in her head, the screams, the flames, the smell of burning homes and lives lost to this attack. She escaped with two others, odd as they were to see two of such different bloodlines together even if it was because of the attack. Sighing she rested, unlike her companions she was caught sleeping during the attack and had already gone to bed, as the attack came she had grabbed her bow and her arrows and went out to investigate. She wasn't prudish of her body but still, public nudity was often embarrassing for both parties, being stared at and those having to view it unwanted. She didn't dare go back for something as trivial as clothing, wouldn't save her from a sword, an arrow or even a spell and now she found herself naked but her underwear with two strangers, though she knew from both if vaguely from the village itself she had never spoken to them more than polite greeting and there watching the flames decorate their home as the screaming died down to the roar of the fires her eyes glistened with tears.
Unlike the Knight she slept upright with her back against the wall of the cave, she was cold and shivering during her sleep, dreaming of fire and death surrounding her in a whirlpool of pleading cries Jolting awake as morning came her eyes look back to the mouth of the cave and she nods. "No... I am fine, though perhaps I shouldn't went to bed as early as I did last night." She comments believing she could of done more... a pair of pants wouldn't go astray and some boots. made with soft calf leather, cured and dyed a deep green with a tough sole, perfecting for riding and tracking game. she hadn't dared try and conjure a flame to keep them warm at night less they were seen.
Taking the ration she smiles and dips her head in thanks before munching on it hungrily. "We need to get clear, we've no idea where they were headed but your idea is a sound one until we have something better." She comments before looking at them both, offering them a comforting smile and small nod.

Tasht sat in a broody silence at the back of the cave, her eyes downcast as visions of the flames and merciless slaughter that had befallen Senara danced across her vision. The scenes only worked to make her angry flare up more and more until she almost lost her temper and screamed in rage at her helplessness to fix the situation. She would have screamed too if not for the knowledge it would likely bring the invaders down right on top of them.
Still, her instincts told Tasht that she would find a way to get revenge, all three of the survivors would, but right now it would do her no good to make herself needlessly tired. So, lying down on the hard ground and using her cloak like a blanket, Tasht quickly fell into a deep, nightmare filled slumber.
"I'm awake." Tasht responded to the Aasimir as her eyes flicked open to take in the two, almost comically, different states of dress of her two wouldbe companions. Odd companions to be sure however. Elivia she knew by name, everyone in the village did, the woman having tended to some sort of wound now and again for most everyone in Senara. The Aasimir however... She gave Tasht the slightest sense of wariness, as if she shouldn't be trusted. A rediculous sentiment of course, but it was as if her very existance was an insult to Tasht. She didn't let her thoughts show though as she politely rejected the rations and produced her own from her backpack before nodding along to the knights plan of warning the neibouring towns.
"That's a good plan. I refuse to let those Isgar bastards do any more damage to us. I'll scout the way ahead if you point me in the general direction of where we're going." her response plain and flat as Tasht continued to fight with herself in her own head as if her own inadequacies were the cause of Senara's downfall.

Rayne clutched the ration she had for the tiefling in her hands somewhat crushing the contents inside when she refused it. She faced away from the ranger indignantly before turning to Elivia who was stark naked. "Do you... Have any clothes Elivia? I didn't notice last night in all the panic." Rayne digs through her pack, but doesn't seem to find anything besides a some length of rope and torches as well as some other miscellaneous gear. "Seems like I didn't have enough time to pack either I'm sorry. Hopefully we can get you something before too long." Rayne turns her head away from the curvy elf, a blush on her face as she looks at the tiefling.
"Longacre is a bit always from here shouldn't be too far maybe a day? No more than 2-3 days by horse if we travel carefully." Recalling her memory she tries her best to paint a picture of the path and direction of the next village. "Just try not to lead us into any ambushes." Though it might sound like a joke in her head the delivery fell flatter than it should have, making her voice deadpan as she glowers at the tiefling.

Tasht glowered right back at the knight, taking her flat tone for seriousness rather than how it was intended. That in combination with the burning rage in her core at being driven out of her home and the already unnerving feeling she got simply by being near the Aasimir caused Tasht to sneer at the other woman before accidently blurting out, "Perhaps if you knights actually did your jobs and protected the kingdom properly, I wouldn't have to watch out for ambushes, would I?!"
As soon as it was out, Tasht's pent up rage evaporated and she knew she had messed up. She was simply projecting her own rage onto the closest outlet and immediately felt terrible for it. "I...I'm sorry, I shouldn't have.." her sentence going unfinished before her own embarrasment at exploding over one of the other survivors who were no doubt feeling just as bad as she was... Indeed being a knight of the realm, probably even worse for not doing the one job she had sworn to do; protect the people. "I...I'll go scout ahead. I'll be back soon to let you know my findings. Oh and...here, cover yourself up, Elivia." the final part being directed towards the elven woman as Tasht unclasped her cloak and handed it to the sorceress to cover her unclothed form if even a little bit before the Teifling woman headed towards the exit of the cave and im the general direction of longacre, looking for any sogns of the intruders and making sure the path to their next destination was safe for the group.
As long as it was, she would quickly make her way back to allow the others to begin their journey.

(Changed ages to fit the equivalent for the setting, so 26 equivalent for Aasimar/Tiefling is 80 due to their long lives.)
The three of you decide to make for Longacre, where Rayne's knightly order, The Order of the Chalice, had a chapter house. In Cheliax, this order was relatively small with some fame. Unfortunately, any organization promoting good will and compassion are usually kept small in the Infernal Empire, but rarely are they outright snuffed out or hunted down, so long as they follow the laws. The Order of the Chalice is one such group.
Longacre itself is known as a town for military veterans to retire. There are some other rumors about it, but all unsubstantiated and not really worth remembering at the moment. The journey itself would be a few weeks of travel, and as long as you didn't take detours, it shouldn't be difficult for three people to stay ahead of or avoid an army, if they truly were marching to the center of Cheliax.
When the three of you set out that morning, you find warm sunshine and a gentle breeze, a farcry from the flames and smoke of last night's raid. The sound of the Iseld River is audible, and visible, through the treeline. There's a well worn trail following the river to Longacre and would certainly speed your travel, but it would carry the most risk. Conversely, you could make through the woods, finding the way there yourselves. It would definitely take longer, but you would more than likely avoid any foraging parties or skirmishers from the Isgeran army. Though, they do say other creatures tend to roam the woods...

Rayne would ignore the comment the tiefling would make, doing her best to hide her emotions as she knew she did fail in her mission. She desperately wanted to strike the woman for speaking such a way to a knight, but she knew it'd only make the situation worse and damage her own pride much much more. Taking a moment Rayne grabbed her Lance; a small banner with a golden chalice on a white field swung as she lifted it up. Looking down she saw that it had torn and become stained with blood, maybe next camp she can spend some time repairing it.
A mixture of emotions ran through the young Aasimar, she was excited to see her old chapter house once again, but she was also apprehensive about bring such grave news to the grandmaster of the order. She felt distracted by the possibilities, what was she going to report? That she ultimately failed in her vows? That she let an entire trade town fall under her watch? Rayne cursed herself. "All of them... I'll kill all of them if I have to.." She muttered to herself as she felt the angry well up inside of her. The knight kept her horse, Kallendren or Kal for short, next to her choosing not to ride it and maintain a walking pace with her new companions. When the opportunity presented itself she voiced the opinion that marching on the trail would be the best. Time was their enemy in this case and they had to keep in front of the enemy if they wanted to warn Longacre.
"I.. I know you aren't soldiers but this is our best choice. Kal isn't really fond of forests and since it's just us 3 we'll be much faster. We need to give Longacre as much time as possible to prepare their defenses." Rayne looks to her two companions as much as it'd be easier to ride ahead she didn't want to have leave the only two survivors alone.

Tasht turned her head up towards the heavens as she trio left the cave, the welcoming, warm rays of sunshine and gentle, cooling breeze seeming almost incomprehensibly nice after the atrocities of the previous day, as if the three of them could take a leisurely walk back through the forest and Senara would be standing there just as it had always been, pristine and untouched by evil. Sadly, the grim truth couldn't be denied however and it was up to these three to make sure that Senara's fate didn't befall any of the other towns of Cheliax.
Upon hearing the Aasimar's thoughts on taking the main road to Longacre, Tasht was filed with unease at the prospect of leaving the woods for an extended period of time. It was an understandable idea of course, time was of the essence, but there was no doubt going to be enemy search parties sent out ahead of the main war band for precisely that reason; to hunt down any escaping survivors or messengers from other towns to make sure their presence remained unknown. Still, now wasn't the time for arguing and as much as being so completely exposed and away from the forests she had spent so much of her life sent chills down Tasht's spine, Rayne was right. It was only fair they gave Longacre as much time as possible to prepare for the coming onslaught they would no doubt soon be facing.
"As much as I hate the thought of leaving the woods, I think you're right. We need to make for Longacre as fast as possible and trying to navigate tthrough the forests would just take up time we don't have, especially with your horse." Tasht affirmed before raising an eyebrow and looking towards Elivia, "What do you say? Take the chance and head down the main road as quickly as possible and just hope we don't get waylaid by those assholes?"

Elivia looks at them both, shaking her head as they remark her lack of attire and their inability to provide one. "It's fine, It hardly matters in truth, wish I had time to grab my boots or my horse, I hate the idea of them using the mare for their own evil doings." She comments before being handed a cloak to wear. Riasing a brow she nods and wraps it around ehr chest to cover her torso and groin area much like you would a towel. Leaving the cave alongside them the Elven Sorceress drapes the bow across her body and keeps the quiver on her hip, ready and eager to get moving and travel far a head of the host that had destroyed their home and killed their friends. "The road is quicker and speed is required, they is just as likely to be scouts in the woods if not worse as upon the roads. At least with scouts we have a chance of defending ourselves if we encounter them." She comments before drawing her bow and testing the string.

[Encounter Roll: 17]
The three of you decide to follow the trail going alongside the river. Despite the dangers it may carry from any invading army, it would give you speed above all else. The woods themselves carry their own dangers, and you will mostly avoid those on this route. You travel to the sound of the rushing river nearby and the occasional animal sound coming from the treeline. Due to the dense trees, you can't see very far into the distance, but by virtue of this trail, you know you'll eventually reach your destination. You travel for several hours without any interesting catching your notice.
However, toward sunset, you come across a handful of Elves, five altogether. They all look to be wounded or hurt in some way. They all wear their clothing ragged and the strongest one stands up to your group as you approach. The three of you recognize them, though not by name, as those who also once lived in Senara. He picks up a club and takes a defensive stance.
"Hey! We're all hurt, we mean you no harm," he shouts.

Knowing the path best Rayne takes point with Kal, gently tugging on his reins as she carries her bags and any other miscellaneous gear the group might have. For the most part the journey is soft, almost soothing and if it weren't for the fact that she barely survived the other night then this would have been an enjoyable walk. Under her armor though the knight was shaking, a trepidation in her step as her confidence and courage wavered. She's dealt with small threats from time to time: bandits, monsters, evil creatures. But an army? What was she going to do...
Her thoughts were broken though when she spotted the other group. 5 elves, survivors!! "Wait wait we're from Senara as well, I led the militia the night of the attack.." Rayne casts her eyes to the side in shame. "My companions and I are headed to Longacre to warn them of the encroaching army. My horse can carry the most wounded of all of you." She looks at them her Chalice banner fluttering hoping they recognized she meant no harm as a knight of the Chalice. Rayne was eager to redeem her failure if she could save these people then maybe she wouldn't fail in her duties as a knight. Though she could be acting rather presumptuously in the eyes of anyone more pragmatic.

Seeing her fellow elves Elivia smiles and moves forward, allowing Rayne to signal their intentions before she moves over to them her eyes scanning them with a frown. "I was the healer, come I'll see if I can tend to any of your wounds." She remarks to the group before working her way to the most wounded to tend to them, treat them with her magic and help ease their pains, they had all lost their homes last night and it was her job in that village to tend the sores and aliments of the people within it, she couldn't return their homes but she can help their physical pains.

As the group stalked up the road towards Longacre, Tasht made sure to keep an arrow half nocked on her bow string as her sharp eyes kept a constant vigil for any signs of movement on the surrounding countryside, fully aware they might well be walking into an Isgar ambush. She would have liked to make some sort of conversation but found no words came to mind that could break the tension in the group so eventually just resigned herself to a sullen silence as she once again started playing the previous night over in her head, searching for any way the horrific situation could have neen turned around though nothing came to mind. How could it? It had been a small, unprepared village versus a roving warband. They were doomed from the start...
She was quickly snapped out of her thoughts however when the smooth sound of an Elven voice reached her ears, making her look over the ragtag bunch of injured elves on the road with the slightest amount of suspiction. If they were this injured, surely they would try and hide themselves away rather than blatantly sit in the middle of the road, just waiting to be found and finished of by their attackers...
"Stop being so dramatic..." she hissed quietly to herself before casting thoughta of betrayal and ambush to the side, her comrades seemed to think these people were genuine, so it was probably best just to follow their lead. Getting in amounst the group, Tasht handed out any spare rations she could afford to lose to those who were hungry, figuring if Elivia was looking after wounds she could save her first aid kit for the moment while Rayne seen to moving those who couldn't move themselves.

The wounded Elf says, "Oh, thank the gods. I thought you were with that war party for sure."
He drops his club and takes a knee and says grimly, "We barely made it out in the chaos. They put the town to the torch. Pulled every building apart. Nothing but ash there now."
An Elven woman pipes up, "Monsters, all of them!"
A third person says, "I hope the Chelish army slaughters 'em like dogs!"
Elivia approaches them one by one, trying to mend their wounds. (Conjuration Roll: 18) She does so with excellent results, removing most of their pain and leaving each of them with only minor scrapes and bruises. Each one says, "thank you" very genuinely in return. A few of them had broken bones, a flesh wound, and some burns here and there, but nothing directly life threatening, just enough to make them a lot slower in travel.
Tasht remains suspicious of the whole situation as she keeps her eyes peeled and focused on the area around the group. (Perception Roll: 10) However, she notices nothing else out of the ordinary other than her own tactical observations. She offers some rations to these people and they immediately eat them.
"We've been so hungry, thank you so much," says the male elf leading them.
"By the way, my name is Vashiel, and I was an apprentice to the blacksmith. I saw my master get skewered, and then they threw him into the forge..."

Seeing to each of their wounds she smiles and dips her head, making sure they knew they were welcome as she sees to the rest, kindly and diligently paying each of them close attention to see their more serious wounds mended and healed. She nods at their stories sharing their distress about the loss of her home and those within it still they couldn't just stay here moping about it and had to keep moving. "Elivia." she chimes to them though some might of already known of her. "And please we can't tarry here, any of us, the forces of Isger will likely be sweeping the woods as the army advances to catch stragglers and alter the main host to ambushes." She comments giving a worried glance to her two impromptu companions.

Rayne payed little attention to her surroundings as she looked to and tried to care for the elven survivors putting the most wounded on Kal so that the trip to Longacre would at least be a bit more expedient if they group were to expand. "Vashiel.., ah I recognize you now. I stopped by your shop to mend my equipment from time to time." She gives him a small smile. "I'm sorry to hear about your master he was a good man, we'll get our revenge on them one day, but for now let's get you all to safety, we don't have enough rations to last us the whole trip so we may need to start hunting to stay afloat, the river might have some fish as well..." Rayne turns to Tasht with an expectant look seeing as she's a ranger of sorts she'd probably know best.
"Elivia is right, we should continue until nightfall at least, then we can find a safe place to rest." Rayne then unlatches her weapon belt and hands her longsword to Vashiel. "This should be more effective, if you're the only one capable of bearing arms you have to do your part in defending these people."

Even though nothing caught her keen eyes, Tasht still couldn't fight the feeling that something was off, likely it was just residual nerves but what if...? "No, stop it. You're acting like a child." Tasht once again scolded herself quietly as she did her best to force a smile on her face while continuing to hand out rations to the group. She really was trying her hardest not to make things any more stressful than they needed to be.
When the question and expectant look came from Rayne though, Tasht quickly nodded in agreeance while her mind worked to try and remember if there were any dens or caves nearby she had previously scouted one her hunting trips, "The forest itself could provide more than enough resources for us, and not just food either. We could easily gather enough firewood to keep us warm at night, if we dare risk a fire, as well as makeshift weapons if we happen to need them. Speaking specifically of food though, I could likely track and hunt down a couple of deer or wolves for their meat. Fish too, though the bounty would be much less reliable than that of forest animals unless we could quickly fashion some sort of net..." Giving her shoulders a slight shrug before continuing, "Basically I can easily procure whatever we need, I know these forests well. The main problem would be that I would need at least one other person to help me carry the kills back to camp to be prepared, preferably someone who both has experience hunting and can use a bow or some form of projectile. I CAN do it myself of course, it'll just be much slower going." She looked around the group as she said the final bit, looking each member up and down as they had their wounds healed for anyone that would volunteer. "Of course this can be discussed in greater detail later when we finally set up camp. However, if possible, I would like to suggest we camp close to the forest with little to no hills rising around us. If those Isgar Bastards do manage to find us, I would at least like a good chance of seeing them coming first."

(I believe there is some disagreement here, so I was just waiting for it to be resolved.)

Rayne looked to the tiefling then to the Elivia. "I think im most suited to stay and protect the wounded, on a hunt im not much use with a bow and dont really know the lay of the land outside of the roads here. If the two of you want to go hunting while i stay with the wounded when we make camp that'd be best. A cave could provide a fairly defensible position and would be a nice place out of the elements to set up a fire for cooking." The knight looks at the survivors with a look of concern, she wouldnt know if many of them would survive the trip to Longacre if they werent careful.
