I take advantage of the short break to collect my thoughts before the next issue that needs to be decided comes up. This is going to be far less interesting and much more stressful than I'd hoped. But I shall endure, for my kingdom.

The next few weeks are very much the same. Full of debate, hard decisions, and stress... It leaves you wonder... Why would anyone want this job? Anyways, plans to extend your road system and place unneeded soldiers in reserves are underway. In addition your investigations uncover a huge frustrating lack of information about the Toshii. A potentially very large reason is that it appears that literally no one ever bothered even trying to talk with them, and no one ever figured out where they live in the desert, whether or not they are nomadic... Or really anything about them except what was gleaned from their raids... Hell, you didn't even know they were called the Toshii before the envoy. There is some speculation that they are remnants from an ancient civilization that use to exist in that desert, the same monster girl empire that Talo was said to have destroyed, but despite a few pieces of information, it's just speculation. One bit of evidence is that the gold and crystals(Both of which are incredibly valuable) are consistent with artifacts from this civilization, though judging from what Tenii said, they could have very well just looted them. The existence and manufacturing of this 'glass,' a material only ever made by this empire is probably the strongest piece of evidence, but could simply be coincidental or their raiding of the ruins led them to discover how to do it. And finally, this last bit isn't confirmed but Tenii could very well be an Anubis, a form of monster girl unique to the deserts and particularly that fallen empire, and are well known for their intellect.

Speaking of Tenii, as promised she arrived before the Nalmash for the private discussion, should you wish it. Currently she is in the diplomatic wing, waiting for an audience with you.

I'm excited to meet her, and then possibly this strange Nalmash, king of the desert people. The lack of information is irritating, but I suppose is to be expected all things considered. The total lack of information is another reason to look into trade. I must make sure to ask Tenii about the possibility of getting a map to some of their oasis or trading posts, although I doubt that would be fruitful.

Having chosen the garden for the place of your meeting, you wait there for several minutes before Tenii is finally escorted here. The guards then turn to entrance, far away enough to give you privacy, but close enough where they can come rushing in if there is a problem. She's looking alluring as last time and approaches you with swaying hips and a coy smile, "Greetings your Highness. I thank you for meeting with me."

I can't help but notice the swaying hips as she presents them for me. They're enticing, but I don't want to start anything out here where the guards can watch. As much fun as it would likely be, business first. "Yes, you wanted to discuss your culture and other matters of trade in greater detail before I talked with the Nalmash. So tell me what I need to know." I tell her, doing my best to keep my mind on business.

She smiles slightly, as she sits down next to you, "That is a wide subject. How about we narrow down the subject to start with? What specifically do you want to know first?"

"Well, first I would like to know why you stayed in the desert instead of trying to migrate out. I don't doubt that you could have forced your way in and taken an area for yourselves. I would also like to know how you divide yourselves into clans, is it family or territorial? Furthermore, what is the clans relationship with demi-humans." I ask her, curious about a great many things, but trying to stay focused.

"You'd actually be surprised at that. While we are strong, we are also few in number. In addition due to Taloism if we do take an area, which is possible, the locals would either need to be killed or suppressed, as they would not cooperate with us. Either of these options would likely bring the wrath of our neighbors and we'd be eventually worn down by attrition if nothing else," She says bitterly, "The clans are... territorial, each having a domain that they occupy. Demi-humans are given no distinction from humans. We are both Toshii. In fact our last Nalmash was a demi-human."
That's curious, is the Nalmash not an inherited position?
"No, it's decided by a... battle royale. Each clan puts forth a Mash to compete for the position who brings a few favored warriors, and then they fight. This is a highly simplified version of it, but more would likely confuse an outsider. Mash are what we call our chieftains. Each lead a clan and are decided by a council of the tribes Sunal, though it isn't uncommon for the new Mash to be the child of the previous."
Okay, she's mention Sunal multiple times, but what are they?
"Ah... Sunal are essentially our priest caste. We communicate with the spirits as well as appease them. We do other important things like tending to the wounded and diseased, care for the Oasis Heart, and help Sukal form their bonds."
Again, an unfamiliar term.
"The Sukal are our holy warriors, who have been touched by the Desert Wind. Being a Sukal is essentially a requirement for humans to become a Mash, though us demi-humans can not be blessed in the same way."

Okay, I'll write up generalize questions, which might not be verbatim what she says, but keeps things going on.

I sit and process as I let the information begin to seat itself. The idea that demi-humans and humans might be the same is laughable, but I can see them being equal if not the same. A battle for the king would make sense as to why a sudden change in behavior might happen, as there's no direct line of training between ruler and ruler to be. The idea of the chiefs being chosen by the priest class is odd though, it would seem to go against the natural order of letting the spirits choose the best with strong blood. "Why didn't the previous Nalmash control their people like this one does? Were they unable?"

I snap to full attention when she explains the Sukal, the previous discussion coming much more into focus. Holy warriors that have been touched by the Desert Wind? That sounds like standardized mage warriors! Mages among our own kingdoms are so random as to make military applications useless unless a particularly powerful one wants to volunteer. The Desert Wind must be some kind of large group of spirits that enable their magic.

"Can you bond any spirits to any person, or does it require anything in particular? I would be more than willing to trade foodstuffs for some Sukal of our own if you are willing to do so, even as a token of good will. Wait, I thought your last Nalmash was a demi-human? How can being a Sukal be a requirement of becoming a Mash if demi-humans cannot become Sukals?"

"The previous Nalmash did control the Toshii... she was just... dumb... and very forward with her methods," Tenii explains, hesitant to reveal the dead's flaws, "So she couldn't come up with any method to solve the food problem other then raiding."

"Not any person can be bonded to the Desert Wind, as it require great strength and the favor of the spirits. I can not grant you Sukal, that is something you'll have to bring up with the Nalmash, though I suspect he won't be eager to give away something so sacred. In addition you'd have to travel to the desert to be bonded to one," She explains briefly before sighs, "Perhaps I misspoke, there isn't an official requirement to be a Sukal, but if you are a human, it is unreasonable to expect to become a Mash if you aren't one, as humans are typically ill-suited to being in the desert compared to demi-humans."

I sit back, processing this. Okay, so it's not a creation of mages, just binding them to their spirits. Given the level of investment required, I don't think that joining the spirit users is going to be a viable strategy. The difference in the two leading styles of the bandits is also a useful tidbit.

"Is the challenge to be the Nalmash open, or does it only occur when the previous one dies?" I'm running out of questions I can articulate properly, many of the ones that come to mind being something that is likely too sensitive to be discussed. I will certainly have to wait to try and find out more once we've got more Toshii to look at and question.

"It happens when ever there the position is vacant, which usually happens with the predecessors death, though they can step down. The Nalmash can technically be removed, but it requires the agreement of the Sunal from every tribe, and was originally intended for if the Nalmash is comatose or otherwise unable to lead," She explains, before adding, "This has never happened in our history though."

After a while, realizing you don't have any more questions, Tenii presses her body against yours, and with a sultry tone, "Why don't we take this to a more private setting?"

I nod as she explains some more of the structure of her civilization, having most of my questions answered.

Oh, I was not expecting her to get so close to me. She's positively intoxicating. A little alone time won't hurt, and I've been practicing my combat studies, so I'm not completely helpless. "I can find some out of the way rooms for us." I tell her, thinking of the way the palace is structured and looking for a private room that's nearby.

There is a lounge for guests not far away that would suit your purposes. The journey there is uneventful but as soon as the doors close, you feel her soft paw gently sliding up your arm. Once it reaches your shoulder, she gently leads you to one of the sofas, encouraging you to sit down before moving both paws to your shoulder blades, kneading them like dough. You didn't realize how much tension and stress from past few weeks went to your shoulders, and you almost melt as she works it out with utmost care.

I lay down, relaxing as she massages my shoulders, letting her firm strength apply pressure and soften my tense muscles. I let out an almost lewd groan as the stress begins to unknot in my shoulders. After a few moments of quiet enjoyment, I ask her, "so what did you need to ask talk about in private?" As good as this feels, I'm not silly enough to let a little bit of fun affect my judgement. I might have to hire a full time masseuse though.

"I'm... indulging my curiosity," She states, before leaning close whispering in your ear, "I've noticed how you've been looking at me ever since we first met. I thought I'd confirm this." Despite this conversation, she keeps kneading out the knots, moving down along your spine and stroking along the back of your ribs.

I let her, she is quite the attractive specimen. And if it's my word against hers, I doubt anyone will care that I played around with some random monster girl. My back arcs as she moves down, the sensitive muscles beginning to relax.
