Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Character Gender: Male
Character Backstory: Fredrick had an unremarkable and quiet childhood with few friends in the city of Donzdorf, but after decided he'd get over his shyness he decided he'd help people in places that few were willing to go, the battlefield. After several years of training he finally joined the German army as a medic, and a mere two months later the Gate opened. His group, dispatched as part of an emergency NATO joint task force, were among the first responders and he was assigned with dealing with the injuried, both the civilians who were caught up in the initial attack, and the POWs that were captured. There he saw that despite their unprovoked attack that they were still human... or at least a sentient creature who felt the same pain. After securing the far side of the Gate and fortified it, his superiors requested for volunteers to try and gather information and support from the local populace, something Fredrick jumped at the chance.

Character Backstory: A hotblooded American, even from childhood, Emilia is rowdy and aggressive but tempers that with a strong sense of duty. She was stationed in Europe at the time the Gate opened and was sent to repel the invaders. Following the victory, her commander lead a counter attack to secure the other side of the Gate, clearing the way for the rest of the NATO task force that were, in her commander's words, "Taking their sweet ass time getting here." Upon the announcement of mission to gather information and support from the local populace she jumped at the chance, thinking it'd help her get an edge in getting into Ranger school. There she meet Fredrick, who she likes to tease for being so much weaker and passive compared to her despite being a male. While she often is very forward and often comes off as rude, she means no harm, and often forgets that unlike her brothers, not everyone understand that she comments are only in jest.

Character Appearance:Image
Alternate Appearance (limited shape shifting):Image

Character Gender: Female(Reverse Trap)
Character Backstory: Ilyana's tribe was content to live in the forest, isolated from the rest of the world save for the occasional traveler to or from the village, until the empire, attempting a scorched earth policy, set fire to the forest they were living. Driven out by the conflagration, her tribe fled right into the NATO encampment which patched them up and gave them shelter. Ilyana, driven by the loss of land and life that the fire caused and the debt she owed these foreigners, worked hard to try and help them, eventually learning their language. After NATO officials conversed with her and other natives, they realized how divided the land was and decided to do further investigations and hopefully getting more sympathetic natives.

Ilyana is hopeless with all sorts of ranged weapons, even the elves stereotypical bow, and was instead brought up to use dual blades. She is however very skilled in the use of spirit magic.

'Verse Backstory:

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Several months ago, another universe forced open a 'Gate' into our own. Opening in Germany, the local area was ravaged by the invading hordes of humans and demi-humans in medieval armor and on dragon back. Thinking themselves unopposed and the pickings easy with these silly un-walled cities, they were unprepared for NATO's response. A large column of cavalry, spearmen, and a few dragon riders were no match for the Leopards, Pumas and Fuchs that quickly surrounded and annihilated their forces.

It took longer to pick the survivors out of the craters than it did to put them in there in the first place. Shortly after picking out any friendly wounded and the beginning of the processing of prisoners, the Heer began its push into the foreign world, quickly turning the base camp on the other side into a mirror image of the pitiful defenses they'd had on Earth. Clearing the area, a base primarily operated by Germans was set up, the hill the Gate was established on quickly becoming locally known as 'NATO territory'.

Once the Empire had finished breaking its teeth on the walls of modern weaponry, things settled down and the Brass decided it was time for the 'hearts and minds' aspect of conquering a belligerent threat.

I have a strong distaste(as in will accept occasionally but too much and I'll have to object) for male or futa on male, violence during sex, watersports, light vore.
I completely reject, snuff, gore during sex, heavy vore, puke, scat, and torture. That's about all I can think of at the moment but may want to add more.

You meet Sgt Wright and Ilyana on the ground next to their Stryker variant. You're not terribly happy with the use of the experimental Stryker variant over the familiar Boxer you'd been training on, but the Americans insisted. Besides which, the Empire doesn't follow the Geneva Convention, not to mention the local fire breathing wildlife, and is unlikely to be dissuaded by anything but the big gun swiveling back and forth in a test pattern.

Running inside, you stow your bag of personal effects in the small compartment for it and give all of the numerous medical supplies you've got strapped in a once over to make sure it's all there. You meet the Sergeant and Ilyana back outside and give them a thumbs up of approval. Emilia signs the paperwork turning the equipment over to her care for the remainder of the trip and you all head back into the aggressive vehicle.

Heading to the front, you take your seat in the drivers chair and slip on the head set. A kick to the shoulder and Emelia gives you a broad smirk "Ready string bean?" she asks you in that annoying voice of hers. Ilyana gives a roll of her eyes before she says they're ready to head out into the world and start taming the wilds.

After making sure both my rifle, a G36C, and sidearm, an USP9, were both properly on safety, I stash my rifle in foot well, since I don't like totting it around. I'm not here to fight any wars after all. With that done, I made sure to go ahead and mentally note where they moved everything. Damn Americans having to do things different, using Imperial rather then Metric, or driving of the right not the left, which also necessitated all the vehicle controls to also be flipped. Smiling slightly to myself, remembering a joke he heard from a friend; if you see a car taking a turn with it's whippers on instead of it's lights, then you know that is an American driver. Looking over everything one last time, I made sure we had everything before heading out.

"We're gut to go," I said upon seeing Sgt Wright, in heavily accented English. Upon embarking, I made sure that Ilyana was properly seated and strapped in since it was the first time he... she rode in such a vehicle... Still trying to get use to the fact that he... she isn't a guy... or younger then me. Although, to be fair to myself, I only learned about a day ago when I was first formally introduced to my new squad. Not that I haven't seen them around, but I never talked to them. Though I later found out that I apparently gave first aid to Ilyana's father when they first arrived, since she came to me yesterday to thank me for that... ANYWAYS, getting off topic. Slipping the headset on, and focusing on the mission at hand, when there was a sudden kick from behind. Looking over at Sgt Wright, rubbing my shoulder slightly, ignoring the rapidly becoming customary verbal jab, I respond as I turned this beast on, "Ja. Ah, what's the phrase? 'All systems go,' I believe."

Sgt Wright gives you the signal that you can begin heading out away from the base and along the road to somewhere distant. A screen on your right pops up with a roughly detailed map, obviously pictures from one of the ever present drones the Americans insist on using to scout areas and provide rough fire support. "C'mon kraut muncher, let's get to it." Emelia says impatiently, clearly not happy with the whole 'distance between places requires traveling'. Or perhaps, it's just that like many Americans, she expects to cover a lot of ground in one day.

Ilyana stays quiet in the back, he no she (keep it straight!), does her best to stay out of the way. She occupies one of the secondary tactical slots. It doesn't have direct control over anything, but allows someone to use the various secondary components and the cameras to see what's going on. The elf keeps a watchful eye on your surroundings in the open plains until you reach a forest, where she relaxes a bit, clearly feeling more at home.

A few more hours of travel and you see the first spot on your itinerary, a small farming village. They don't seem to have much going on, so you can do your standard vaccines and general health checkups that seem to be popular with undeveloped countries.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

For the record, the US military (and a few other government agencies like NASA) use the proper metric system instead of the dirty imperial system.

Revving the engine for a moment, before kicking it into drive, I took us away from the Gate, and the safety of the military encampment.

On the drive, I continuously glanced back and forth from the map to the road, trying to familiarize myself with the area. The drive was nice, despite Sgt Wright's irritation, since it reminded me a drive down a country road, just... longer. Weren't many places like this anymore in Germany, and it's a nice change from the big city and the military bases he's been in for the last few years.

Upon catching sight of the village, I call back to Ilyana, "He... Frau Ilyana, what can we can we expect here?"

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Well considering how resistant the general public is to switching to metric, I wouldn't have been surprised if the military followed suit.

Ilyana looks up at the coming village in the distance, her eyes taking on a distant focus as she looks at the screen before she remembers the 'nocs right next to it and puts her handsome face to them. She gives you a general report on what she sees; "it looks like a general farming village. You can expect a black smith, butcher, carpenter, cooper, mason, and barrel-wright at the very least based on the villages size. I think I see a water mill over by that river as well." She informs you in a very non-committal way. While she's from this world, she's not a human and you're reminded of that fact by her rough statements.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

There've been a few half assed attempts to force the move. Most American engineering and science classes are done in metric, and I think public schools have started teaching metric before imperial. It's just that the regulatory agencies haven't nutted up and decided to take down all of the miles and gallons signs, so it lingers and won't go anywhere. Even then, the effects would linger because of the shear amount of stuff that will simply be translated from inches to mm. A lot of future people are going to be asking why people of the past were so obsessed with 12.7mm intervals.

"Ah, well, better start practicing our speech. First impressions are everything," I said out loud, mainly to myself, as I parked the Stryker, before saying to Ilyana, "Looks like this will be a learning experience for the both of us."

Sgt Wright thinks for a moment before she pops the rear hatch and tells Ilyana to go greet the locals. The elf boy woman follows orders, leading the way and offering greetings from the 'Enayteeoh military' as the Sgt pulls at her lip, listening carefully. She doesn't seem to distrust Ilyana, but wants to follow along as best she can. Finally, she picks up the radio and sends a brief alert to the base that they've made contact with the locals of 'whatever damned village our locating beacon says we're in' before she tells them that she's going to do a meet and greet with your translator.

Shortly after, she motions for you to follow her out, slinging her rifle onto her back as she goes out to greet them. You sigh and follow her out, shutting the engine off and slinging your G36C along your back as you go. You find them having a conversation as Emilia listens in on the other two talking. You have a bit of trouble following along, but catch the gist of it involving some damage to the local water mill that caused a few injuries. You look to the Sgt for permission, and when she nods, you head back into the vehicle to get your medical gear and prepare to treat some wounded where you can.

After pausing for a moment, looking at my G36C, I considered leaving it behind, but training won out and I grabbed the rifle before heading outside. Since I'd be the one they'd actually would be treated by, I want to make sure they would be use to my presence, hanging out ahead of Sgt Wright, but still behind Ilyana.

Upon getting permission from Emilia, I quickly moved back to the Stryker and grabbed my first aid bag, digging around with my hand as I ran over to pulling a splint and some gauzes to the top, since I figure that an accident at the water mill is likely to include crushed limbs or puncture wounds. With my free hand I signal to Ilyana, since I need them to understand that I'm there to help, and I'm not going to risk lives due to not being able to make myself clear with my basic understanding of their language.

(INT:Natural 20!)

The language is easier to get across than you'd feared. It has more structural similarities to German it seems, it's just that the Americans didn't think to provide you with a German to 'Gate-ese'? dictionary compared to the ones they've got. You don't think you'll have too much trouble conversing with them from now on. Even so, you get Ilyana to follow you just in case.

You arrive at the scene to find a lot less chaos than you expected. The wounded are laid out outside where you can reach them as a few people run back and forth inside of the building that housed the mill. You can't tell exactly what they're doing, but you see wounded that you can help.

Ilyana follows you, prepared to translate and shuffles back and forth as you set your gun down and ope your kit, prepared to help some of the wounded. A few of them have tourniquets around crushed limbs and you head toward them, first to see what you can save, second to keep them alive when something has to come off.

(I'm assuming you'll want to do the details on the wounds or did you want me to?)

I am quite impressed with these villagers, considering that the average people tend to panic after an accident. Looking over them, none of them seem to be in imminent danger of death, but one individual, not only had a crushed leg, but had multiple bits of wood pressed into it. It appears they applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, but if that isn't removed soon, the leg would die from blood loss and would have to be amputated. Since he seemed to have the most pressing condition, I tell Ilyana, "I'm going to need you to hold him down," before addressing the man in... 'Gate-ese', nickname pending as I slip on some sterile gloves, "Sir, I'm going to try and save your leg. I'm going to need you to hold still. If you need to bite down on something, here." With that said, I take hold of the biggest bit of wood, and wait for the man to steel himself, before yanking it out. I proceeded until I managed to remove all the bits of wood I could see, before applying a cotton bandage and wrapping it tightly with gauzes. With that done, I remove the tourniquet, hoping that will be enough.

With that done, I turn to the next serious case, and let out a sigh. There was little I could do, the knee to foot was crushed and torn to shreds, and short of reconstructive surgery, which was beyond my medical training, there was little hope in saving it. The thigh appears to be broken too, so I splint it, and patch up the other scrapes and bruises. The rest were more mundane injury, but in this environment, any resulting infection or other complications could be lethal, so I took time to properly disinfect and dress each injury.

After a good while, I sigh, and pat Ilyana on the back, who became my defacto nurse, saying, "Dankeshön. Good work there, you really helped me." With that said, I return to Sgt Wright, pulling off my gloves as I told her, "I am done administering first aid, but two of them are going to need more extensive care. I can set up a triage and it can double as a vaccination station but we will have to stay here much longer then initially planned."

(INT: 5+7)

Pulling the splinters out, seems to do it for the man to begin with. Thick blood oozes out as you spray on the disinfecting adhesive bandage from the applicator. The wounds are so extensive that you have to pop the capsule out and put a new one in before moving on with the bandages and gauze. Undoing the tourniquet, you see the color return to his leg and you think you see his toes wiggle from the wrapping. His leg will recover, you bet. You do note that he was exceptionally still during the procedure, and you catch the appearance of some tiny finger shaped bruises along his arms before you move on. Curious, but something for later.

The second man is not so lucky. The pulverized bone is not something you can operate on locally, and you don't have the training to be sure you'd do it right even if you were back home. You leave the tourniquet on him to keep him from losing blood through the swollen gashes in his skin. A hefty shot of morphine (they still use that in the military, yes?) and he begins to relax. Taking the leg off can wait while you check to make sure no one else needs help.

You give the other patients once overs, a bit more spray from your liquid bandage and disinfectant and many of them are about as good to go as they'll get. When you approach Sgt. Wright, she gives you the nod to go ahead and get started. She begins to unpack the the collapsible tent like structures so she has something to do since her gun won't do much good. You're soon squared away with the man with the shattered foot, deciding where to go from here.

Giving a bit of a sigh of exasperation, I look at the man's leg, before heading into the Stryker to get my tools ready, leaving Ilyana to watch over the man. This was easily my least favorite part of my job, especially when supplies are tight and you can't sedate the patient. Once during training I had to hold down someone in that position... The screams still haunt me. Forcing my self to change pace, I reminded myself that I also need to get a proper cast on his thigh. Might want to start him on an antibiotic treatment just in case too. Now that I think about that, I might want to do that with the man with the splinters in his leg too... Really need to learn their names so I can refer to them without referencing to them by their injuries.. Kind of makes me feel callous.

After making sure my tools were ready, I help Sgt Wright with setting up the triage center, since I'm not going to do an amputation out in the open.

As you and Sgt Wright work on the one end of the tent, you find the other end is ready for you before you turn around. Turning to look, you see Ilyana walking away and grabbing an able body to help her move the man in need into the tent, giving rough instructions on the stretcher she's laid down for the purpose. Both of them bring him into the tent and out of the open air and move him onto the small operating table you've set up.

You finish what you're doing and wash your arms up and down with an alcohol iodine mixture that makes you tingle as you roll up a new set of nitrile gloves and prepare to operate. You take a deep breath and begin to spray the area you're preparing to make the cut down with the same sterilizing component. You give the man a bit of anesthetic to conk him out enough that the morphine should be able to keep him from too much movement. You sit back, your hands trembling as you prepare for something you weren't expecting today.

Ilyana is standing across from you, you hadn't noticed until she speaks up. "Do you need me to remove the leg." She asks you quietly, her boyish face cautious and comforting. Removing body parts is not something most healers are used to doing, but a swords woman like her might be.

With initial protocols out of the way, I stood over the man and let out a long breath... I've never actually did this before, only assisted other people doing it. I examine the area carefully, trying to find the extent of the damage, and more specifically if I'd have to hack through the bone, or not. Then, hearing Ilyana's voice from right next to me, I jump a little bit before pausing to look at her, my thumb started idling doing circles along my index finger as I thought. Hacking through a bone is hard work, and from stories I've heard, a good swordsman with a good blade can make incredibly clean cuts. After a long moment of consideration, I ask tentatively, "Do you think you'll be able to cut through in a single stroke? I need it at close to the tourniquet as possible without damaging it. Last thing we need is for him to start bleeding out."

Ilyana nods that she can do it with her blade. She takes some of the antiseptic you'd been washing with and gives her sword a generous coating before she wipes most of it off. She holds the blade a few inches away from the mans leg, waiting for your order. She looks to you, waiting for your order and you ignore her for a few minutes as you finish all of the prep work and wait for the last possible minute before you look to her. (Ilyana FIT:11+8)

You give her a nod and look surprised a second later when she starts to clean her sword again. Looking down, you see that she's already completed her end of the surgery and you quickly swing into action, stitching him up as best you can. You have the area sewed up and smeared in disinfectant again as you begin to bundle his leg up. Finishing up, you pat the man on the shoulder and he gives you a drooling grin of thanks through all of the pain killers.

Sitting back, you begin to come down from the tension of the surgery, your hands trembling from the adrenal release. That's possibly the most intense surgery you've done in your life.

Barely letting myself admire the precision of Ilyana's work for more then a moment, I quickly got to work, moving the dismembered leg out of the way as I went to work sealing the open wound.

After the last suture, I took a seat and let out a sigh. Field surgery are always intense, but this took it to a whole another level for me, simply because this was the first time I had to to it alone. Even if it went smoothly, I was worrying my head off. Smiling to myself, I looked at my hands, shaking slightly from the adrenaline starting to wear off. I still wasn't done though. I need to replace the splint with a proper cast. Replacing my blood-smeared gloves with a fresh pair, I went on the mundane task of wrapping the rest of the leg in a cast.

After I was done, I express my thanks to Ilyana, "Danke. You saved me a lot of trouble. Sawing through bone is not easy."

Ilyana gives you a knowing nod before she returns to helping the locals. In many cases you see her walk back into the damaged mill and hear a loud banging sound as some great column of wood is shifted and a group of people hustle out with either another wounded person or some object they don't want damaged if the buildings structure was damaged. You notice that they give her a wide berth as dart around her calm stride. Are the locals frightened of elves? Is that a thing here?

You continue doing the general scut work of cleaning up cuts and bruises, disinfecting minor wounds here, setting broken bones there. After another hour of work, you wipe your forehead of grime, sawdust, and whatever the mill was working on at the time. Glancing around, you spot Sgt Wright talking with a local, her translation book out. After a moment, she gives the local a handshake and approaches you. "They've decided they're going to have a party to celebrate meeting a new friend with some good medicinal techniques." She informs you as you hang your head in exhaustion.

"They're going to work on fixing the mill tomorrow after they've recovered from the current disaster. We could stay and help, or we could take off, or we could call in an engineering vehicle as well. I think the later is a better idea for the hearts and mind thing, but I wanted a second opinion." She looks at you expectantly.

As Ilyana walks off, I mutter to myself, "He... She doesn't talk much." As I notice the villagers avoiding Ilyana, I sighed slightly, guessing that racism was a universal, regardless of the 'world' we were in.

As Sgt Wright approached and informed him about the party, I smiled slightly, saying, "That sounds nice... I could use a drink. Hoping for a stout beer."

"Well, we should stay for a few days, if for no other reason then to make sure the injured don't suffer from any complications," I say, idly rubbing my chin as I consider the situation, "We're not engineers though, so any building would best be left to the engineers and if they're willing to accept the help, I vote we call in an engineer vehicle to help them out."

Emilia nods, agreeing with your assessment and begins to head over to the water mill with her helmet cam. She begins to walk around it, placing her hand on various components for sizing and recording a rough shape of the thing before she sends her report back to the base and a request for an engineering detachment to come rectify the local problem. A few minutes later, she gets a call back saying that the local Army Corp of Engineers is looking into the best way to take care of repairs on the thing and will dispatch an engineering Stryker tomorrow morning with the appropriate parts necessary for getting the mill up and running.

The villagers offer much rejoicing, breaking open a keg or two of some kind of drink. It's not the same as the beer you were hoping for, but it's certainly better than the American piss.

"Wunderbar. With luck we should be able to get the new mill up and make sure the patience are stabilized in the next few days. And then it is on to the next one," I smile slightly, hoping that everything goes smoothly.

After drinking the local brew, I say to myself, "Well, it's no dark lager, but it's always nice to try something new." I partake in the merrymaking, though slow my drinking after I feel a buzz. Don't want to be hungover in the morning.

Well, I think a grateful village girl would be nice... as it would serve as a good trigger for potential jealousy from the team.
