You are standing in the midst of what was once your home. The place is still covered in ash and charred remains of everything you'd owned, or what hasn't been completely destroyed. In your hands is the letter that you had been hoping to receive, though you had hoped it would be on a far better day.

An elven mail carrier had been the one to bring the letter to you, after finding you kneeling on the floor crying your heart out. At least the young kid had been kind enough to stay and try to comfort you, rather than simply deliver and flee.

You read the letter again, wiping a tear from your eye as you read the wonderful words once again.

To the esteemed Miss Stravensky,
We have reviewed your submitted application, and after performing our own investigations into your person, we have indeed decided that you have the potential to be a wonderful asset to the Guardians. To this end, your application is accepted, and your place in this years trials assured. A carriage will be by your home to pick you up and escort you to the start of your new life, should you prove capable of exceeding our expectations of initiates. It will arrive by 1600, so please be sure to have finished any last minute errands and gathered what you will be bringing with you, for once the trials start you will not be allowed to leave until they are over.

Sincerely,
The Brigadier

Its currently 1200. You have four hours to take care of any possible loose ends.

Lara wipes away the tears from her eyes well enough to read the letter. If it were any other day she probably would have been ecstatic to receive it, but in her current situation she must test her resolve and move on. Thanks kid...I can take it from here. I'm sure your mother is waiting for you or something. She lets the kid out and sets out to at least have something prepped before the carriage arrives to take her. She looks around to find anything to take with her, but to her dismay nothing appears to be of use. From what it looks like someone covered the house is a layer of oil and then started a fire, practically every inch was covered in soot and ashes. She spends an easy two hours trying to recover anything, but nothing could be found. At this point she decides it's best to leave and pick up some supplies from any near by stores, some underclothes some basic necessities, water and some food.

You leave the ruins of your home after finding nothing to salvage. Your mind goes down a list of things you might need, and after some thought you decide that the most likely thing you would need would be some extra clothes. You doubt the Guardians wouldn't supply you with base necessities, at the very least you've never heard them denying such to their initiates.

It doesn't take you long to find a clothing shop, a few customers milling about it looking at the wares. An elf slightly shorter than you hops over the counter and sashays over to you, a wide smile on her face as she asks "Hello, welcome to Liviva's Fabrics, how can I help you today cutey?"

Hi...uhh im just looking for some easy fitting clothes, maybe some underwear. You know, anything i can move around in. Lara looks around the store for things she likes and picks out a few items, a bra or two, some matching panties to go along with them, white tang tops, etc. Not wanting to waste to much time she tries not to browse as just picks the first thing she remotely likes and would be useful when traveling to the training grounds. Besides this stuff here, got anything cheap that might come in handy?

The elf quickly smiles and after giving you a once over, quickly moves off to gather a few she thinks you might like. She returns as you've already gathered a few yourself, and thinks about your question.

"Hmm...not unless your interested in sewing supplies, though I've got a simple repair kit to fix any tears or rips, if you want that. And here's some more for you to look over, if your interested."

You look through what she brought you, and soon enough you believe you have enough clothes. Liviva looks it all over and says "Alright, that'll be seven silvers."

Seven silver...you've got enough for that, more than enough in fact, considering you have six sovereigns weighing your pockets down.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

You have six sovereigns.

Sovereigns= Gold
Silver and Copper are just named as they are. 100 Copper = 1 Silver, 100 Silver = 1 Sovereign

Oh well, i was expecting it to be more expensive than that but thanks. If that repair kit isnt too much then i'll take it as well. Lara pulls out her money pouch and exchanges one of the sovereigns for silvers. She plops down 20 silvers onto the counter. This should cover it. And keep the rest. Lara quickly packs her things, not wanting to miss the guardians to pick her up at her home. Know any place where i could get some armor? I like my leather armor, but i might want something better.

The girl is rather surprised when you end up handing over 20 silver to her, which she happily takes as she adds the repair kit to your purchase. "Umm...well the nearest armor shop I know of deals only in metal armors. Sorry I can't help."

She gives your change and then places it all in a small leather bag, which she says is "Courtesy for such a cute customer."

You leave the establishment, and head off back to the ruins of your home. The Guardians will not doubt be picking you up there, as they wouldn't know where else to pick you up from. As you wait, your mind wanders off to what your new life might be like, envisioning many of the adventures your liable to end up in.

A rattling sound on the cobblestone street shows the arrival of your ride. A small carriage painted blue and gold, the colors of the Guardians banner, pulls up to you and opens up, revealing a heavily armored Dwarf and a female orc in clerical robes.

"Well...this is...different." She says, surveying the ruins of your home, though her eyes light up when she see's you. "At least this time the recruit is around."

"Aye, was kind of worried we wouldn't end up bringing anyone in. Brigadier'd have our heads he would!"

The two step out, the woman bowing to you while the dwarf simply nods. "You must be the recruit, oh what's the name again..."

"Olaf, can you remember anything?"

"Of course I can! I just need some help every now and then. Now where'd that help go...ah here we go." He pulls out a canteen and takes a swig, letting out a happy sigh as he says "Now I remember, yer Lara stras-something or other."

The woman shakes her head. "Stravensky. Sorry for my friend, he's a bit of a lout. I'm Naudia, and we will be your escort to the fortress."

Lara bows to the shop keep and bids her farewell and thanks for her the bag as she heads out and back home. Waiting along the pavement her mind wanders. She thinks of the wonderful life she could be having at the academy with the other recruits. Training, adventuring, mingling with other like-minded folk. Her dreams trailed off as she thought about a good future for herself, hopefully much better than the past she'll be leaving behind soon.

A rattling noise catches her off guard when she recognizes the guardian banner colors flying with the carriage stopping just in front of her. She gets up and awaits the arrival of her escorts... Noticing it was a rather heavily armored dwarf and an orcish cleric to much her surprise, not really thinking orcs were religious people. She giggles as the remarks about how other recruits weren't around and how Olaf fumbles around with her rather difficult name. She returns the orc's bow. Hi Naudia, thank you for receiving me into the corps. I'm happy to be chosen for the guardians, especially now. Lara looks back at her ruined home, tears well up but she suppresses them. Inside the carriage she waits for her escorts to take her away to her new life.

The two look at your house, a look of concern crossing her face as she shakes her head. Olaf gives it a 'what can you do' look and frowns at you. "Hey, no kind words for the dwarf? Aye, I see how its gonna be now." He smiles a moment later to assure you he is only joking.

"Like I said, don't mind him." Naudia comments as the three of you get into the carriage. Its roomier than you expect, and you find a seat in front of the window. It seems unlike most carriages, this one has seats built onto the doors.

As the carriage sets off, Naudia turns to you and says "I must tell you, your not technically part of the Guardians yet. Your an initiate, a hopeful who has the potential to become one. Until you pass the trials, you are still technically an average citizen of Faile."

"Or as average as a recruit for us can be anyways." Olaf mumbles as he drinks from his canteen.

Naudia shoots him a glare, but smiles again at you. "However, from what we've been told, I'm sure you'll have no problem with the trials."

The carriage hits a small hole, and you all jump a bit. You notice that Naudia and Olaf's first reactions are to move for their weapons, but once nothing further happens they calm down.

"So, Miss Lara, what happened to your home?" Olaf asks suddenly, looking rather serious.

I dont really associate with the best people... Someone i pissed off must have gotten their revenge on me finally. Lara averts her gaze saddened, even though it happened a hours ago it feel like and eternity and tears fall down her face knowing her home will never be there again. I...I was hoping for a new start with the guardians, so im very grateful you came. Lara fidgets around while waiting around to get the training grounds, but nervousness wracks her body the more she thinks about failing and not becoming a guardian. What will she return to if she fails, she wonders So what are initiates required to do when we arrive?

The two briefly share a look with each other, before Olaf snorts and returns to drinking and glancing outside, while Naudia turns to answer your questions.

"Well, you wouldn't be the first to try and find a new life in the guardians, though I should warn you that just because you join the Guardians doesn't mean your old life doesn't still follow you. Olaf's a good example of that."

"Phah, Clan Dokin will stop sending idiots after me eventually."

"As for what is required, well the first thing will be you signing in. We're known for being great adventurers and soldiers, but we also keep meticulous records. After that, you'll attend a short opening ceremony, before your assigned a room and a partner."

Olaf chuckled "And before you ask, no, your not going to be doing the trials entirely by yourself. Part of the reason we Guardians are so good is because we work as teams. But the first week or so you'll mostly just be getting to know each other. Most of the two-person tests are in the middle and end of the trials."

Im getting a partner? Lara looks at the pair and kinda ponders. Im guessing you two have been partners since your trials. What are the living quarters or well the entire place like? I've hard stories but I could never believe them cuz they got more and more outrageous.

Naudia looks ready to answer, but the guffawing of Olaf stops her. "No, I always love this part. Every year they seem to get better." He takes a sip of his draft, and then asks "Why don't you share some of the outrageous, and we'll tell you how true it is, or if its downright rumor mongering."

Well I heard things about how the trials could be life threatening, like fighting giant tentacle monsters or even dragons. There were also rumors about how recruit living quarters were practically shanties. But the scariest thing is probably hearing about how you can die from some of the trials, but if you pass them you form some kind of blood pact with your partner. Lara looks around as she blurts out some things that seem obviously wrong. She fidgets and get a bit hot under the scrutiny of the dwarf

"Oh, the life threatening bit I can assure you is true. The trials don't NORMALLY have those who fail end up dead, just those who are either colossally stupid or just had really bad luck. If that bothers ya, well I'm afraid your gonna have to get over it, because you'll likely face worse if you succeed and become a guardian. We deal with some mean things out there." Olaf says.

"As for tentacle monsters or dragons...those don't usually show up, at least not big ones. The monsters you'll face are the ones we capture, and usually the bigger more dangerous ones put up too much of a fight." Nauida says.

"And as for shanties, well...define a shanty..."

"Olaf!"

"Settle down. What I mean to say is, the initiates quarters are in the fortress courtyard, and their not some high end establishment, but their certainly decent enough."

"Regarding a blood pact...that one is an ancient tradition that's mostly died out within the ranks. Some initiates do it, but most don't bother with it."

Oh okay, well thanks for clearing that up. Lara sits quietly for trip idly making small talk with Olaf and Naudia, waiting to arrive at the castle ground and her first day as an initiate of the guardians.

The trip doesn't last more than thirty minutes, as the roads are starting to get clogged with evening foot and coach traffic. Soon enough though, the carriage is taking you inside the ancient fortress that is the home of the Guardians, Fort Manit. Within its thick stone walls lies a large castle-like complex, sitting in the center of what is obviously a large courtyard. Off to the right of the carriage is several rows of small, well built wooden shacks. You see a small number of people walking about them and conversing amongst themselves, no doubt other initiates.

The carriage stops next to a tent set near the shacks, and the three of you step out. Your two escorts walk you into the tent which holds a small table and chair. Sitting behind the table is a Cath, a human with feline characteristics such as a tail, ears, eyes, and occasionally fur. This one seems to only have the ears and tail, but he offers you a smile as you approach.

"Hello there, I take it since Olaf and Naudia are with you that you must be Lara. Give me just a moment...ah here we are." He pulls out a scroll and hands it over to you. "This is just a simple thing all initiates must do before they can join the trials. Mostly a formality really, since most initiates already seem to figure it out, but rules are rules."

The scroll is a contract that essentially says that the Guardians are not liable for any potential permanent damage to your person or death should it occur during your trials. It lists sections for you to place next of kin, should you have any, to be informed if the worst should indeed happen.

After you sign it, the Cath takes it and adds it to a decent sized pile of scrolls and says "Alright, you'll be in Shack #17, its the second house down the fourth row. You're partner is...Kallick the Sorcerer. Ah yeah...fair warning, he's a Kobold, so try not to stab him on sight or anything, he's already complained about three other initiates trying to run him through today alone."

Oh...Uhh okay...a kobold, huh. I see. I'll head over there right away. Thank you for accepting into the trials. Lara does a courtly bow as she steps out her chair and makes her way out of the tent. Shack 17, she thinks to herself as she walks past the other shacks. Most look identical with really minor alterations such as color or maybe some decal put there by the current resident. They also don't look suited for long term living, which is for the most part obvious as these are the initiates quarters. She finally makes her way to her shack and knocks on the door before entering. Hello? Anyone in there? I'm your new roommate Lara Stravensky.

You hear a sharp 'yip' come from within, followed by the sound of something falling, and then what you can only assume is Kobold speak. A moment later, and the door opens, revealing your partner, who is currently splattered with a dark brown liquid that smells like gravy. You are initially surprised, as your knowledge of Kobolds states they are usually short. This one reaches up to the underside of your breasts.

"Yip Yip, you picked wrong time to knock, was busy making supper, now gravy is all over floor." He says, but goes ahead and opens the door the rest of the way as he ushers you in. "Introduction later, yip, must go get some more water and get cleaned up yip."

He rushes out the door, leaving you to observe the insides of the shack. As Olaf said, its nothing fancy, but despite the temporary looking nature of it from the outside, the inside looks relatively comfortable. A fur rug covers most of the center of the floor, the rest of which is either dirt or straw. In one corner of the room is a bunk bed, with it looking like the Kobold has claimed the bottom bunk. A nearby table is covered with some alchemical regants and tools, while a mouth watering smell comes from a series of pots and plates near the small stove placed against the wall to your left.

Nice to meet you too! She calls out as she sees the little kobold run out back to kitchen area of the shack. It is rather comfortable looking inside. She felt more or less at home, with her previous residence being similar in size, maybe some more walls and such for privacy and some more enmities, but for now it'll make due. She looks around scanning the shack. What ever Kallick was cooking it sure is was great. She was a decent cool herself but this was much better already. Turing her head away from Kallick she takes in the rest of the place there was a bunk bed and Kallick seems to have taken the lower bunk, judging by the clothes and how rumpled it looks, probably been here for quite a while. She notices a table off to the side covered in regents of many natures. Walking over too them she takes a closer look and a whiff of it, which was a horrible mistake as it stunk, bad. Hey Kallick what's all this stuff she says as she points at the alchemic materials.
