Background: Born in the Commonwealth, Cassandra was raised on one of the outlying farm settlements. Her life was rather simple til raiders attacked and she was orphaned. However, she proved to be quite plucky and resourceful and while it hurt to lose her parents, they'd raised her to always look to the future. She eventually became part of the settlement militia, then once she was old enough decided to go wandering the land. She eventually became a mercenary of sorts, though one who made a point of keeping her price low. She was able to do so in part thanks to finding a working chinese stealth suit, which has helped her gain the nickname "Crimson Shadow"
She's started to grow a bit bored of the Commonwealth though, not finding as much challenge, and has considered leaving the region to find new things to test herself against.

Like with many mercs, raiders and other armed wanderers in the ruins of the Empire Wasteland, you've found yourself arriving at the town of Batterkill. Having past into the scarred and embittered lands of upstate New York, dotted with ruins and wreckage of the War in between vast open tracts of land that new settlements now sprout up in, you've made your way from small town to small town, finding surviving in the wastes out here has differed little so far compared to the Commonwealth. The town of Batterkill, however, offers a change to your usual stops of waster dens and ramshackle razorgrain farms. Whether a change for the better or worse remains to be seen.
Built up along a stretch of green just outside the ruins of an old world town, you're welcomed to the town by a sign, the original lettering worn away in parts and colourfully replaced by its new owners. Officially, Batterkill is a trading hub for weapons and services, where mercs such as yourself come to showcase their talents - either to be recruited by a merc gang or hired out by travellers come seeking a skilled gun for one purpose or another. Unofficially you had heard the rumours spoken about this place on your way here, a raider den in all but name, populated in no small part by mercenary bands that were little better than the very raiders they claimed to protect people against. When troops of mercs would rest up at Batterkill they were only a night of rowdy drinking away from swinging by any of the local settlements and either shaking them down for caps or throwing a party that leaves the place more damaged than the average raid would. These people wouldn't all make for tasteful company, that was for sure, but it was still the best place this side of the state to help your reputation from the Commonwealth carry over to here.
Cautious eyes fell upon you as you entered the town, but none of the guards on the outer wall stopped to ask you your business or made any move to take your weapons. As a merc hot spot, everyone here was armed, so if anyone were to cause trouble, they'd have the entire town to deal with. There were residents here outside of the merc of course, though most of them now tailored their businesses and daily routines to the clientele they expected. Gun vendors and equipment repair shops lined the makeshift streets and the town sported not one but two competing bars to offer the various gangs of the wastes a place to wind down and relax and hopefully keep them in good enough spirits to avoid any trouble. If trouble was unavoidable, there was even a business to cater to that, with the main draw of Batterkill being the Arena. Here mercs could test their metal against each other and showcase to the crowd which were the best hired guns in the wasteland. The fights didn't need to be to the death, but it was rare a match would go by without someone dying.
You spotted iconography you recognised from your travels as you made your way into the town:
The Gunners, a merc outfit that would take any job, no matter how cruel, that operated out of the Commonwealth. You've had run ins with them before. They were well organised and equipped which set them apart from raiders, but you've never known them to do job that left the Wasteland a better place.
The Talon Company, whom you only know of by reputation, but if that reputation was anything to go by they weren't any nicer than the Gunners. You've even heard that they actively seek out jobs that keep the wasteland from improving, so they can continue to profit off of the strife around them.
The Prowlers - ambush and infiltration specialists. They've been known to take hit and run jobs on raiders and merchants alike. Less bloody than most other gangs as they prefer to use a more stealthy approach and disappear as soon as the job is done.
The Deadheads, a gang comprised entirely of Ghouls. As if they didn't stand out enough among all these humans, it seems a large part of their number spoke with a British accent, presumably having held onto it since before the War. They had a lot of metal armour or armour pieces, though the ones you spotted around here were walking around in leather jackets and spiked collars.
The Barbarians - Hopped up on enough chems to OD a brahmin, this noisy band of near tribal warriors specialise in getting up close fast and hitting their targets very hard. They've never been known to travel without some Psycho or Buffout on hand and seemed to have developed a resistance to the more negative effects of the drugs. At least the negative effects to themselves, they don't seem to mind when they enter a blind rage and injure those around them.
The Gunners, Talons and Prowlers all seemed to prefer the bar called McCarthy's, while the Barbarians and more ragtag groups would gather in the Dirty Yam. The Deadhead's weren't welcome inside either bar, but gathered around the back of the Dirty Yam to have their drinks. Neither bar really stood out as being better than the other, so it really depended on which groups you either wanted to talk to, or wouldn't hate being near the most, when it came to choosing an establishment to drink at. Plus these bars were often ways the mercs here got in touch with potential clients. If neither option interested you, it could be worth checking out the Arena and seeing if there was anything scheduled for today.

Batterkill was certainly an interesting place. Both the word of mouth that Cassandra had heard about the place and the town itself made it much less surprising that it had such a name. The place almost screamed "Raider Hole" were it not for the fact that some of the folks keeping watchful eyes on things were way better armed than most raiders would be.
Still, she strolled into town without a fuss, and after asking someone who looked reasonably friendly for the short version of what's what of the places to be, she considered her options. The Dirty Yam sounded like it'd be more interesting given the presence of the Barbarians, who had a decent chance of either being high or ready to get high. She also wasn't too much a fan of the Gunners, though that was more because there had been a few times where some groups of them had tried to get her stealth suit off her body.
But that being said, the Prowlers sounded much more like her kind of folks. And given her nickname of "The Crimson Shadow" it seemed a much more viable group to start trying to work on adding more successful (and lucrative) missions to her list. So humming a tune from Diamond City Radio, she started making her way on over towards McCarthy's, a bit of slight sway to her hips as she did so given her cheerful mood.

The sway of your gait draws eyes of many a touch starved merc as you approach McCarthy's. Hugged tightly by your form fitting stealth suit, the back and forth movement of your ass elicits many a whistle from those gathered near the entrance of the bar. "They've got some finely dressed whores round 'ere, huh?" you hear one man call out, before another next to him chuckled and added "Yeah, when's the last time you got to fuck a redhead? Probably that vault dweller we picked up stumbling out of her little hole in the ground, huh? Wonder if this one will be as easy to tame." The two of them chuckle some more at their comments, their eyes never leaving you. No doubt similarly disgusting conversations must be being shared among other admirers of your body right now, but they were at least all keeping their hands to themselves for the moment.
The bar was a little hazy with smoke fumes as you entered, and the dimmer light meant you had to take a moment for your eyes to adjust to the interior. It was a bit of a dump, but it looked well stocked and that's about the best you could ask for these days. You get a few similar stares and comments from patrons, but far fewer now that you had entered, most of the people in here already engrossed in their own conversations or drinks. For the most part the three main merc groups in here kept to their own sections of the bar, the Talon Company, Gunners and Prowlers all sticking with each other, and the more independent mercs filtering in in the middle. However you did notice some of the Gunners and Prowlers mingling over by a pool table, apparently engaging in a wager with each other. A friendly wager at most bars, but there was a low tension to the game that would indicate this one was anything but friendly. Keeping that in mind, you notice some bullet holes that mark the walls of the bar in a few places, as well as some powerful weaponry hanging behind the bar wall. Bar fights in here must be serious business, and with all these hot-headed merc gangs gathered in one place, it wasn't a surprise that they would happen often.
One thing that stood out to you as you watched the game was that the Prowlers playing were all women. And they seemed to be quite inexperienced at the game, fumbling the pool cue and floundering their first few shots. The Gunners began laughing, setting a big sack of caps on the table. "See, this is why women should stay in bunkhouses rather than play pool or... play at being mercenaries. If you ladies want some real men to take care of you, you should think about listing up with the Gunners. Me and the boys would gladly keep you safe and warm at night."
The tension seems to have dissipated, the Gunners having grown confident and relaxed in the situation and the Prowlers seemingly to appreciate their condescending tone. "Thank you Mister." says one with dark purple hair. "I almost have as much trouble holding this stick thingy the right way around as I do a gun, it'd be nice not to have to carry all these heavy weapons around all the time."
"Yeah, you're real smart and kind." chirps up her friend, a blue haired woman also taking part in the wager. The Prowlers match the Gunner's increased bet with a sack of caps of their own and even throw in a few more. "Oh, oopsy. Well, its on the table now, might as well raise the bet."
It doesn't take a genius to see what these girls are up to, and you catch on to their ruse quickly. The Gunners, however, seem too deep into their drinks, and ogling their bodies, to figure it out for themselves, and as soon as the Prowlers start playing properly the mood shifts back to the tension you sensed earlier as the Gunners find themselves losing more and more.
The blue haired girl laughs as she collects up all the caps. "Wow! Aren't we lucky! Sorry boys, looks like we won't be needing you to take care of us after all."
The purple haired one raises an eyebrow. "Maybe you'd like to sign up to be bed warmers for the Prowlers, though we can't promise we'd make too much use of you."
The Gunner they were speaking to slams his fist on the pool table. "You fucking cheated! Or something! Give me back my caps now bitch or I'll-"
He cuts short as he hears a click. The purple haired woman presses up close to him and though the pool table is obscuring her hand, you have a pretty good idea that she has a gun pressed up against his crotch. "Or you'll what?"
The man gulps, before backing off. "Come on, we'll teach these sluts a proper lesson later." he says, re-joining his group over by their table.
The two women turn to each other with a cheeky grin and start counting their winnings, leaving you a chance to go over and introduce yourself.

The responses just earn a sharp smile from Cassandra, who was used to such things from men and even some women. If they thought she'd be easy to tame... they'd have another thing coming. It'd certainly be an interesting way to make a name for herself in the town, but it wasn't precisely what she had in mind. Instead, she focuses more on the interior, taking note of the pool game and the tension in the air both amongst the players and some of those who were watching. The fact that all the players among the Prowlers are girls is interesting... as is the act they're putting on. Cassandra notes that quite a few folks who are watching from their tables seem to notice, and a few snicker as the Gunners don't seem to realize what's in store.
Things go about as expected given how deep they seem to be in their cups. She idly wonders if they'd been sober if it'd been more of a challenge... or if they'd have caught onto the act. Cassandra suspects some of the smarter members among the Gunners might give them a smack upside the head for falling for such an old trick... more so given the fact it was from a group that relied on stealth and deception. Though perhaps the fact the two were so good looking played a bit of a roll. Even Cassandra found herself eyeing them up a bit.
Giving a small hum, Cassandra strolls up to the pair, clapping as she says, "As one merc woman to another, I have to say I always love watching men being shown their place. Especially drunk men thinking with their dicks first."

The two girls lock arms as they pick up a pair of shot glasses. They clink the glasses together before taking a shot each and unlocking arms to set the glasses down as they hear you clap as you approach. The blue haired woman does a mock curtsey while the purple haired one leans against the pool table as you approach, her tank top hanging low to show off her cleavage as she does so. "Ah well, if they didn't want to be fished for their caps they shouldn't make it so easy. They were practically throwing their caps at us." she says. She gives you a quick look up and down before pouring out a third shot glass and handing it over to you.
"The names Ayleen, this here is Harper." the purple haired woman says, gesturing with her thumb over to the blue haired woman beside you.
"But you can call me Mommy." Harper says with a big wide grin before growling suggestively.
Ayleen chuckles, shaking her head. "Ignore her, she just likes to tease. We both do. You look a bit clean to be mingling with the sort in a place like this, if you don't mind me saying. What do they call you, then?"

Cassandra can't help but nod at that, taking the offered glass and downing it in one go. It hits a bit hard, but she's had harder... though whatever's in that one is probably in the top five at minimum. At least it tastes as good as it burns its way down. As the two introduce themselves, she decides to reply to the suggestive gal first with a, "Maybe, if you can prove I should~" Then offers her hand as she says,
"Cassandra to my friends, though some others like to call me the Crimson Shadow. I'm new to this area, but I hail from the Commonwealth out east."

"Ooh, I think that can be arranged." Harper says, giving you a wink as she pours another shot, keeping you and herself topped up.
"Crimson Shadow, huh? That's a very fancy name." Ayleen says, glancing over to Harper. "We'll be sure to follow up with our Commonwealth contacts, see if you've got a reputation to match your name."
The girls gesture for you to follow them to their table, sitting apart from the rest of the Prowlers for the moment so they could spend some time chatting with you. "Grab a seat, Cass." Ayleen says. "Tell us some of your stories. Why'd you leave the Commonwealth? What brings you to Batterkill?"

Following them over to their table, Cassandra nurses the next shot, taking small sips so she can savor the taste and burn both. As she gets settled in, she hums and says, "Comes from my preference for stealth and my very red hair. This suit of mine helps out quite a bit for the former." As for their questions, she decides to answer in reverse order.
"The Commonwealth was getting boring. Predictable. Wanted to head somewhere else, see new places, work for different folks. Plus, with the Minutemen starting to pick back up and the Brotherhood showing up with that big airship of theirs..."
As for stories... well, that was easy enough, she had plenty of them. Both of successes and failures, though more of the former than the latter. Most of them involved going after raiders, ferals, super mutants or other merc bands that were causing one trouble or another for someone. She'd also tangled with at least two different cults, the Children of Atom on one occassion and a group of raiders that had seemingly appeared out of nowhere on another.
Then there was the mission where she found her stealth suit. One of her favorite stories, in part because it showed how important stealth could be to any mission. Having gotten part way through an old military installation being used by some suspiciously well armed sorts from the south, she'd nearly gotten caught by them. And would have, had she not found a secure storage room that they'd either overlooked or hadn't been able to get into. She managed just fine though, and found a working stealth suit.
Waiting a few hours til things had calmed down, she made use of the suits unique abilities to finish her job, which had been to kill the leader of the group and bring some files they'd stolen to some cooky scientist or other. They hadn't known she'd succeeded in her mission until she'd been long gone, having slit the man's throat as he sat in the office he'd situated himself in.

"I see why you'd want to talk with us." Ayleen says as you finish up your story. "Got some real useful gear for our line of work and a knack for using it too it seems. Come to give us your resume, or did you just want to spend some time drinking with like minded folk." Ayleen finishes up her drink and checks the bottle, seeing its empty. "I'm going to go get us some fresh stuff for the table. You want the same swill, Cassandra, or do you have a poison you really thirst for right now?"
After getting your response, Ayleen heads over to the bar to collect a drink from the Mr Handsy tending to it at the moment, buying the next round with the Gunners' caps. This leaves you alone for a moment with the flirtatious Harper, who leans in to close the distance between the two of you. "Got some pretty exciting stories there." she says, nibbling her lower lip against the nail of her pinkie. "Can't all be action and adventure though. You ever take a moment on your travels to enjoy a much safer way to make your body all hot and sweaty?"

"No reason it can't be both." Cassandra replies as she takes a longer drink. "I am a mercenary looking for new and challenging work, so I'll need to get word around one way or another." As she notices her own drink is likewise empty, she shrugs and says, "Something lighter, I like to alternate my drinks."
As Ayleen heads off and Harper leans in to ask something that Cassandra isn't too surprised by, she snorts but smirks as she says. "Oh yes, quite a few times. Hell, that's how I snuck into a raider camp for one mission I had back before I got the stealth suit." She sighed and shook her head a bit. "A pity, cause some of them were good lays."

Ayleen gives you a nod. She seems to think in kind as she also returns with something softer for herself too, though Harper is topped up with more of the strong stuff. Harper chuckles at your comment, who gives you a very intent look up and down, her eyes narrowing with obvious interest, which is only made all the more apparent by a soft bite to her lower lip. "Oh I like you."
"You like everyone." Ayleen cuts in as she sits herself back down. She kicks a second chair out in order to put her feet up. "Though this time I agree with you. I'd like to see you in action, Cass. Sounds like we could do some work together, maybe even make you a regular part of the outfit, if that interests you. But making a good first impression isn't enough to get in with the Prowlers. We need to vote you in. At least, our heads do. Unlike most of the riff raff you'll find at Batterkill, we're a bit more refined in how we do things, so we've got a slightly tighter vetting process. Even if you only want to work alongside us, you still need our approval - though we're a little less strict about that. Fortunately for you, I'm one of the people that gets a vote."
"So am I." Harper says, giving you a wink.
"No you're not." Ayleen says, making Harper huff, her chest heaving from the deep draw of breath.
"You didn't need to tell her that."
Ayleen chuckles before turning her attention back to you. "Look, if you're interested in working with us, I can give you pointers to which of our members here you'll need to impress if you want to run with us. And hey, you're in Batterkill. Plenty of opportunities here to show off your talents and make a few caps in the process. Might even become an arena star if that's your thing."

"You do seem the friendly sort. Sometimes ya gotta be careful around such though... not always for bad reasons though~" Cassandra says with a smile of her own. She listens, nodding in acknowledgement with Ayleen's words. She'd honestly expected as much... any sort of mercenary outfit that wasn't just a collection of oppurtunists tended to have some sort of hoops to jump through. Some better than others.
"For the moment, I'd want to start working alongside. Time will tell if becoming part of the outfit itself is a good idea... I trust it's not like the Gunners, where leaving is rather... complicated." She takes a longer pull of her drink as she adds, "Though making a name for myself first is the best thing to do regardless, but its always good to make some friends along the way. Sexy and smart ones, especially."
She briefly considers the arena, but tosses that aside for the moment. Maybe if she got really hard up on caps she'd try that.

Ayleen grins as you say you're interested in working along side them. "Works for me. The cuts will work a little differently, and we'll prioritise the safety of our own over yours if it comes to it in a firefight, figured I'd make that clear upfront. But we don't stab good business partners in the back. Before we can discuss that further, you'll need the approval of the three of our leaders currently here. As I said, I'm one of them. The others are Sureshot and Elsie."
She takes a deep drink before continuing, wiggling her fingers beside her head as she organises her thoughts. "Sureshot's a bit of an asshole, but he's good at what he does. Its not his real name, but its what everyone calls him. I'm surprised he's not at the bar right now. He could be watching one of the arena matches, or trying out some firearms in a shooting yard."
"That or he's got some other would-be Prowler initiate spread legged and moaning her lungs out beneath him." Harper interjects, catching a quick glare from Ayleen. "What? He's done it before!"
Ayleen huffs and nods. "Its true. He's got a bit of an active libido. He won't force himself on you like a Gunner would, but he won't by shy about it if he finds you attractive."
"Which he will." Harper says, with a wink. "You know... because he has eyes."
"You are the worst." Ayleen says, playfully swatting Harper on the shoulder before continuing. "Elsie may be a tough nut to crack. She's a bit more distanced than most the group, doesn't socialise much. In an outfit full of stealth specialists, its not surprising we've got a fair handful of more quiet, reserved types among us. Elsie's more than just that though, she's cold. She starts off not liking you and you'll have to prove your worth even listening to, let alone working with. I could probably tell you a bit more about either of them if you have any questions. Of course, you'll also have to impress me, so if you have any questions on how to do that, or thoughts on how to get the attention of any of the others, run them by me and I'll see what I can tell you... without making this all too easy for you, of course."

Cassandra can't help but snort in amusement as they talk about one of the leaders of the Prowlers being the sort to, least as it came across to her, be taking advantage of some of the would be joiners for the group. She wondered if Harper spoke from personal experience, and if this Sureshot was really that good or just had a reputation for such. She considered asking if he got his name from his skills in bed or shooting... but then figured it'd be in bad form. Plus it could easily be both.
"Not the first time someone's said something like that to me... though on the safe side, I'll be careful around him." She remarks. Some guys after all thought they were hot stuff and could find it hard to take no for an answer.
She nods in consideration for both, humming to herself. "Elise sounds like someone who'd care more about results. So best way to impress her would be to actually accomplish some tough missions. Ones that especially rely on being unseen and unheard." She finishes her drink, and smirks a bit as she asks, "Well, I suppose it'd be nice knowing a bit of how to impress you. A better question I have though is... know anyone with a job that folks have been reluctant to take up, for one reason or another~?"
Her eyes gain a confident and dangerous glint as a predatory grin spreads across her face, leaning forward. "I always relish a challenge after all~"

Ayleen gives you a quick look up and down, smirking a little as she does so. "A tough job, huh? I think I've heard of a few floating around. You sure that's how you want to go about it... I mean, it'd work, but it'd be risky."
Harper was on the edge of her seat, a giddy smile on her face. "Ooh, this is going to make for one heck of a good drinking story. If you pull this off."
Ayleen seems to be thinking something over for a while before responding. "Okay, so... there's this one job no one's done because it... well, it seems stupid. Pays decent caps... I'd argue not enough for the risk, but I suppose it technically doesn't ask you to kill... anything."
Harper's giddy smile wavers for a moment and she turns to Ayleen, one of her eyebrows raised. "Wait... you're not suggesting she..."
Ayleen hushes her compatriot at turns all of her attention on you. "Some travelling merchant passed through here with details on a nest... said she needed some skilled help to recover something from that next. Considers herself something of a wasteland gourmet and wants to use an egg in a recipe she's working on... A Deathclaw egg. I think you can see where I'm going with this."
She leans back to sip more of her drink, swirling what was left around in her glass as she appraises your reaction. "No shame in backing down. Like I said, pays not enough to be worth going up against a deathclaw. But it might be worth sneaking passed a deathclaw... if you're confident enough in your skills. Prowlers are about the only ones that might take the job because of that, but none of us have yet. If you pull it off, that'll get you on our radar."

"Nothing worth doing and being remembered for comes without a little risk." Is Cassandra's smooth reply. "Plus, if I wanted easy jobs, I'd have just stayed in the Commonwealth, worked for Bunker Hill as a guard or some such."
She can't help but quirk an eyebrow as Ayleen makes mention of a job that seems stupid, let alone one that made the giddy Harper seem unsure. Or at least, confused. That was, until she heard what it was exactly the job was.
"Ah... mhm... wonder if its someone from back home. Heard about a job like that before... can't recall if anyone took it up." Cassandra said with a hum. Stealth was her forte, and she'd snuck past some deathclaws before back home, both before and after gaining the suit. There'd been close calls, but it was within her realm of experience.
"Sure, I can take it up. There any other details of note? I know Deathclaws are dangerous, but if the nest only has one, kind of surprised folks haven't taken it up yet." It sounded like the sort of job that folks hard on caps might team up to take on... and hope perhaps their partners got eaten so there'd be more for themselves.

"As far as I know, only one deathclaw has been spotted around there at a time. Could be one or two others, but not many are likely. Its true, any of these other gangs probably have enough firepower to take it out. But like I said, they pay isn't enough to fight a deathclaw, let alone to be worthwhile when split among the amount of people needed for most of these lot to be able to pull it off." Ayleen rubs the side of her temple as she tries to recall what details she can. "Its nest is out in some pre war quarry, I believe. I'd need to get the exact location from someone else, but I can probably get it for you if you really want to do this. Terrain's hazardous enough. Not radioactive, I don't think, but unstable. Another reason not to go there in large numbers. A hardy deathclaw might be able to deal with the environment, but a squishy person will learn just how sharp those rocks can be if they lose their balance or get unlucky."
She looks you over once more. Is that concern in her eye, or just curiosity? "You sure you're up for taking this job? Hey, if you pull it off, you'll get another drink from me, that's for sure."

Cassandra nodded, starting to understand why no one had yet tried to go ahead and take the job. "This is the sort of thing you do if you're desperate, crazy, or want to challenge yourself." She smirked a bit, humming as she said, "I'm definitely the last one, though I know a person or two back home who'd say I'm a bit crazy too. Suppose it comes with the line of work a bit." She hums as she notes the look in Ayleen's eye. It could be one, or the other... or it could be both.
"Yeah, I think I'll take it on. I did say I want a challenge after all~!" Cassandra declares after a moment more.

"Alrighty." Ayleen says, finishing off the rest of her drink. "I'll check with my people, get the details of that job then. We'll be around Batterkill for a while, so you've got time to make sure you're supplied and ready for the job." She turns over towards one of the tables crowded with other Prowlers and raises a hand to catch the eye of one of the other members of her group. She waves them over and quickly whispers something in their ear. As she discusses things with her subordinate, Harper scoots a little closer to you.
"You really going to sneak into a Deathclaw nest all on your own? Have you done stuff like this before. Because it definitely sounds like you're hitting that 'crazy' mark quite a bit. Not that I mind. Crazy is fun."

Humming to herself as she thought about what she might need, she considered Harper's question. "No, but I've snuck into a super mutant camp before, I imagine it's about at least as dangerous and risk as that was." She did frown as she noted, "Well, okay, maybe a tad less dangerous. The super mutant's might have raped me first before eating me, so maybe I'd have a chance to escape. I doubt a deathclaw would do that."
