Bio- John Shepard made his reputation as a ruthless commander prepared to do anything it takes to get the job done. Its this cutthroat attitude, along with his marital and biotic talents as a Vanguard, that earned him the title of the first human Spectre. His fame skyrocketed after saving the Citadel from an attack by the Geth and a living warship known as Sovereign, the vanguard of an entire fleet of these vessels known as Reapers. Shepard's discovery of this threat, lurking in dark space beyond the edge of the galaxy, was not received well by the Citadel Council, however, and so in their efforts to dismiss his claims of Reapers, they sent Shepard out of the way to patrol the border with Geth space.
As a person, Shepard was quite the womaniser, and at the time was even juggling two secret relationships with members of his team, Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams and scientific liaison Dr Liara T'soni. Shepard never had brilliant control over his own libido and had a habit of taking a variety of women to his bed during his service.
After dying during the Collector attack on the Normandy SR1, it would end up being the renegade organisation Cerberus, whom Shepard had thwarted the schemes of in the past, that would bring him back. The Lazarus Project, however, was not as successful as the Illusive Man had originally envisioned. Shepard's body was just too damaged, with not enough genetic material remaining to fully reconstruct him. There were, however, compromises that could be made to at least bring back the Commander's mind.
Using state of the art and experimental cloning, gene therapy and medical procedures, Shepard was remade in a new body. One much younger and female. Knowing he was no longer getting the benefit of bringing back someone that the galaxy would recognise as the hero of the Citadel, the Illusive Man was more willing to make other compromises as well to make sure there was still value to be gained out of this project. Shepard was modified in a variety of ways, but among the most notable of which was how she was made to be incredibly alluring, through a combination of genetic tailoring and integrating pheromones into her body that would grow more potent the more she sweats, Shepard was made to be attractive to nearly all races in the galaxy. The Illusive Man, while denying the request to put a control chip in Shepard's mind, did acquiesce to some of Miranda's concerns over Shepard being controllable and agreed to let Miranda carry out subtle psychological reprogramming on Shepard while she was being restored to make her easier to control once she woke up.
Shepard remains oblivious to all of this. Dimly aware a few times she awoke to strange lights and noises and doctors looking down on her, she finally comes to true consciousness to the sounds of alarms blaring and a woman's voice coming over an intercom telling her to wake up. It is here Shepard finds herself, naked and in a new body on a medical bed.

Alarms were blaring, a woman was trying desparately to get you to wake up, and what sounded vaguely like the muffled echoes of gunfire. Your head still felt fuzzy, and your entire body felt strange, almost alien to you. There was a weight on your chest that you didn't remember being there, and an emptiness between your legs that felt rather wrong in so many ways. Your hair also felt longer, framing your face... which it had never done, as you'd inherited the tendency from your father's side of not only short hair, but early receding hairlines.
Still, you push yourself up and off the bed, holding onto it for support as your mind remembers all your training, yet its as if your body doesn't quite remember everything it should. It takes a few tries to manage walking, but you manage to make it to the terminal where the woman seems to look hopeful and her voice relaxes just a tiny bit.
"Finally! You're up! Shepard, quick, grab a jumpsuit from the locker over there and a gun, we're under attack and need to get off this station as soon as possible! I've sent someone to help as I'm pinned down here, but it sounds like you're gonna need to help them out too! Quickly, or else the bots will get to you first!"
