A Card Game

Postby Car6on » Thu Sep 29, 2016 4:27 pm

Hi
I've been playing around with Magic Set Editor and I have created some playing cards.
I was wondering if there would be an interest for more of this sort of thing on this forum.
Let me know what you think. :)

I know there has been some attempt at like a board/card game before and I was very much interested in seeing something come out of it. Now that there is more ideas about something, I'm all for it...

First off, I will say that we probably want to have some sort of consistent style with the card art as having different art styles will be rather distracting to have, especially when we get different artists and real people involved in the pictures. This also leads into possibly getting some people to create new art or finding an artist who is all right with sharing their art as I don't want to run into issues where we're using art for the game and they don't like it. Also I'm not a big fan of using real people for these kinds of games. It feels off and it doesn't really work like seeing something drawn by hand. There's also some other issues as well about using the images as well, but probably not as much as using other artists' works.

Next is me being the casual YGO player that I am, but usually monsters with yellow cards are basic monsters, meaning they're the bare bones building blocks of a deck that provide for tribute summoning and building blocks to perform special summons. They do not have any sort of effect, otherwise they're orange effect monsters.

Which leads into my next point. If we're going to do a card game, it might be better to come up with a new card type all together. Of course we need to discuss the mechanics of the game itself, figure out the different type of cards one can have in a deck, and then go from there. So we can figure something out over time to make this an enjoyable game.

I like it but i would only play online. Can't see this taking off in solid copy.

i agree with what she says, if we ever do a cad game (hopefully only online) we would need to loosely base it of current card games like yugioh, magic the gathering, Pokemon, MLP (actual a good card game surpisingly). then add twist to them in some way. create a basic set of rules like turns and how much starting HP. Any bonus if you take out an enemy card. these and more are things you need to think about for creating a card game, it will not be an over night project.
I might not create games, but I will test them, Then I will give advice on what I think needs to be added, removed, or improved.

I totally agree to the everything above.
Just ripping off some existing game wouldn't really make the game attractive to play, except for the pics of course. Since it would necessarily be limited to a narrow amount of cards and tactical possibilities, it would be a nicer experience to just play the original.
As for the type of game, you don't have to make it combat based. There are plenty of other possibilities, like building a porn empire while hindering your opponent of doing so, some munchkin like sex dungeon crawler or something else entirely. Before you start planning, you should consider the possibilities of your genre with a general setting you want your game to take place in and then create a basic system.
Since this is a computer game, you can even add all sort of stuff you wouldn't want in a tcg like points to collect, money to earn etc., so you don't have to limit yourself to paper and the memory of the players.

I do love the idea of a exotic based card game, but as of me I also have to agree with Running and everyone. What I think they are trying to say is make it your own, just copying and pasting random pictures to an already existing card style (in this case Yu-Gi-Oh!) dosent exactly makes it yours. My advice is also before you actually try to start making the game is just when you can take atleast an hour from your day and like all great creators do take a note book and brainstorm every idea you can think of and work the game up of the best ideas you cone up with.

Totally true.
Also, if you struggle with ideas, we're here to help you out. I've been playing card games since 2nd grade elementary school, so I've got my fair share of experience and I'm sure this goes for others here as well.

I was probably understating when I said that I had been "playing around with magic set editor". I've actually made cards consistently over
the past year and as far as I can count, I've created over 1000 cards.

Anyway I totally agree with what you're all saying. I enjoy the game a lot more when it's drawn/animated art.
Furthermore I would very much like to invent a new format to the game, since, as you said, it doesn't feel like mine. It's too Yu-Gi-Oh.

About the art, I can't really see this taking off if I'm to create or have someone create all the art. That being said any contribution in art form
is very much appreciated. I just don't want to limit myself to that alone.
Since this is a nonprofit project, I'm hoping that I have whoever created the art's blessing in using it.

I was hoping to make the game work in Magic Workstation but so far I haven't figured out how to use it/convert from MSE.
I've just created a few cards with the Magic the gathering template with new rules. It's my attempt for a new kind of card game (different from the one I posted)
Actually inspired by you @RunningAroundInCircles
I worked on the idea and yeah. Check it out. Not finished of course. Just food for thought.

So far the idea is that you have a basic income of 1 each round. You then play slaves to increase income, reputation etc. You can play thugs(applied to an enemy slave) to lower their income, or perhaps even lower their Toughness enough, so that they're out of the game. Then there is skills which are applied to a slave. Some skills however may be applied to all your slaves on the field.
That's what I have so far.
I don't know the rules of magic the gathering but I don't see why this is important if I'm to create a new kind of game.

I'm actually very glad that you heard us out on this. IMHO this is a huge improvement on what you showed us before. As for the artwork idk if they will have a problem with it as long you dont take credit for it, credit for the game is fine but not the art work. I'd actually now very much love to see what you do with this and love to see online component to it if you can make that happen. Also over 1000 cards made damn you've been busy.

Please, call me RAIC. Much shorter.

I like the idea with income, it's very simplistic and easy to keep track of.
After reading what you have so far I got some ideas:

keep in mind that's basicly brainstorming, so it might be a bit messy

Setting: You and your rival(s?) fight over the control over the market in your town.
Goal: You need to dominate in "influece" in order to win (control a set percentage of a total pool?)

Staff: thugs, slaves, as you said
free whores (as in not enslaved)(bare with me, i'll explain below)
lawyers
janitors
basicly a variaty

Building: You start with a basic brothel, like 3 rooms or so. This basic set up can't be reduced by sabotage (possibly by stronger cards?)
Cards: extra room
security (giving bonus on guards)
bar
strip club

action cards: enslavement
sabotage
advertizing
blackmail
smear campaign

equipment: whatever you fancy

I could go on and on but that's not the point

I'm thinking of 2 basic resources: income and influence. Influence is what you need to win, income is your way to achieve it. You could add something like "public opinion" or "reputation" as well but I have no idea how at the moment.
staff would have a "moral" stat that does what life or HP does in other games. If moral drops to zero, free staff quits, unfree staff refuses to work until the moral gets risen. slaves have a lower base moral than free staff.

I don't want to get too specific or line out an entire game, so I won't spoil some ideas for you or but in too much, so that's what I can give you at the moment.

Hope I could help

What kind of card do you prefer?
I think I might like this one better since it creates more room for the art.

Edit: And yet the text is of course a little less visible...

Great with all the ideas RAIC. I'm sure we'll have a good outline for a game soon.
I'm thinking slaves and whores(more expensive than slaves perhaps)
and thugs to do sabotage. Guards to protect you from thugs and maybe police to bribe/hire and a judge to bribe too.
Maybe nurses to give some bonuses.

Then there could skills, buildings that unlock new possibilities or card effects.
Special cards like Mistress, Pimp, spy etc.
