The land of Yamato has never known peace. The grounds are soaked in the blood of warriors sent to die for their people. The greed of their leaders, the Shoguns, have extended to a thirst for total conquest of their land, and great atrocities have been committed in their names. Possibly due to the many sins of man in this world, creatures known as Yōkai have come to exist. These are monstrous beings who exist to hurt and maim with no concept of love. One of the most feared of the Yōkai are the Oni.

They are a rare group of warriors who had been tainted with a curse. Forced to do the bidding of an unknown leader, the Oni are feared all across Yamato for their dangerous prowess in combat and their threat to the regime. It is said that those cursed to become an Oni are marked with a Sigil by the Gods to warn those around them of what they’re becoming. It is an inescapable symbol that will regrow on any part of the body if attempted to be severed. Recently… this Sigil has appeared on you.

The Sigil has ruined your life. You had to leave your family behind once you found it, for whatever reasons you had. You've become a Rōnin—a wandering warrior with no master, nowhere to belong, and no home... or so it was until you met a young woman in your dreams who claimed to be the one who marked you. Armed with power given by a demon, you are now tasked with a difficult quest; help this woman conquer Yamato in the name of her family.

Summary
Komorebi is an oriental fantasy RP that takes place in the mythical fantasy land of Yamato. You, the player, will play as a Ronin who has recently been bestowed the Sigil of the Oni, a strange demonic curse that turns the bearer into a powerful inhuman weapon to serve the will of the one who bestowed it upon you. It'll push you to go on a long journey of power and conquest through the lands, battling a great many enemies and likely being on both ends of the rape stick... but is the life of a powerful servant all you want? Do you truly lack the ambition to take what you desire most and strike to make the world serve you? This is YOUR journey for power. Should you choose to, you just may be able to make the story fold your way.

The design of Komorebi is inspired by oriental fantasy. The combat is meant to be fluid and intriguing, and the world itself, open and fun. The lore is similarly open to interpretation and manipulation from the players so long as it stays within the realm of the world and makes sense. I'm planning to have this go for a bit so the mechanics themselves'll also be changing and developing as the game persists.

The World
Image

Yamato is a land plagued with war; all forms of battles are common across the continent, from small conflicts against bandits to the literal wars between the clans. Even though it's been unified under the Yamato banner, the culture of Yamato is strongly war-like and violent by nature... war has simply evolved to not be so out in the open. Yamato is also home to the Yōkai. They are inhuman creatures said to be birthed from the chaos and bloodshed who only exist to hurt, maim, and destroy all they see. They have become a notable threat to all of the nine clans as of recent, with large-scale attacks on villages from the smarter Yōkai and common attempts to assault travelers and caravans en route to other locations.

The geography of Yamato consists mostly of steppe grasslands, marshes, some mountainous regions, and forestry. These separate regions have mostly been confined by the clans as part of their territory. You'd find the Minamotos down in the bamboo forests, and the Ietake and Inazumi clans in the grasslands. The Shima reside in the marshes, and the Taira are located in the more hill-y and mountainous parts of Yamato, just to name a few examples. Coincidentally, the Yamato family themselves dwell right in the middle of the land, with some forests, grasslands, and mountains/hills in their part of the continent.

The Clans
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

The Yamatos are the prestigious royal family of Yamato, the land in which they rule. They are headed by Emperor Shotoku, the 5th emperor in line of the Yamatos and the descendant of First Emperor Jimmu, the Divine Son of Heaven. The Yamatos have recently taken a hard hit to their power as the other warrior clans have risen greatly in both influence and ability. While Emperor Shotoku is still seen as the one ruler of Yamato, it’s only a matter of time until the ambitions of the Shoguns overtakes them… the Yamato family is also staunchly religious and greatly arrogant due to their connections to the supposed Divine Son of Heaven. They believe their right to rule was granted to them by Heaven itself, and a great deal of them spout this fact as an excuse to trample over others and neglect their own training. Truly, the Yamatos don’t have a good reputation. If it weren’t for Emperor Shotoku and a few other notable members, the entire clan would be taken for fools and snobs.

The Minamoto clan is one of the more prestigious and powerful of the families, as well as a former rival of the Yamatos. Ever since the Yamatos had risen to power, they’ve been steadily building their own power while maintaining the guise of loyalty. They are led by Shogun Minamoto no Kitabe, a notoriously calm and patient man who's since adjusted his business to include a great deal of subterfuge, manipulation, and assassination. The Minamotos are very busy in their leaves.

The Shima clan has somewhat of a bad reputation. They dwell in the marshes, and have been named ‘the Barbaric Tribe’ for their incredibly brutal and simple ways and their ignorance of the Bushido. Due to this, they have very few allies and aren’t in good favor with the Yamato family. What they do have, however, is a great deal of manpower and strength on the battlefield. The Shima clan is very… “iffy” on loyalty. They tend to assimilate war-time prisoners and bandits into their army, forcing them to either work in the bed, the armory, or the battlefield to stay alive. So long as you fear and obey their leader, the Shogun Shima no Yakumo, they don’t really care who you like or why.

The Taira clan are a large organization of warriors who also were once mortal enemies with the Yamato family, but a conflict in 543 brought the two families together when the Yamatos helped defend them from the Hojo clan when they were at their weakest. Ever since, the two families have been great allies. Now, however, when the Yamato family is at its weakest, old flames of ambition is stirring in the heart of the Taira clan. While the current clan head Shogun Taira no Murakumo still has loyalty to the weakened Yamatos, not every member feels the same way…

The Inazumi clan are very out of the norm. They battle with bestial partners at their side and lay waste to their enemies with uncommon technique in battle and grace, and for those reasons, they are called the ‘Dogs of War.’ Every major conflict has had the Inazumis present—whether it be for the sake of destroying a rival clan or just for the sake of appeasing their own heretical Gods—and they’re commonly hired by some of the less honorable clans to assist them in battle as if they were mercenaries. For all of these reasons, they clash greatly with the Yamato family as a direct threat to the regime. They are also the most outspoken of the dissenters who wish to overthrow the family. Tensions have been boiling over between them. The current head of the Inazumi clan is Shogun Inazumi no Daizo.

The Masamune clan are, for all intents and purposes, the most noble and honorable of the clans. They are well respected by the populace and are great warriors in battle. They honor the Bushido to the best they can at all times, but in order to be so progressive and great, they’ve had to break some tradition. Clan heads aren’t born into power, but appointed based on combat skill and integrity. Thanks to this, the Masamune clan’s values have always been upheld. Truly, such a family is far too kind for the war-torn land they reside in. The current head of the Masamune clan is Shogun Masamune no Hidetaka.

The Ashikaga are the newest clan that formed when the Yōkai threat became far too great for the clans to ignore. They are a clan of warriors specializing in handling Yōkai either through killing them or taming them for use in combat. Due to their skill in this department, they are greatly feared by many and have a lot of enemies searching for the secrets of their techniques, but the Ashikaga are very secretive and paranoid, as well as extremely loyal to their clan head, Shogun Ashikaga no Kotomi. As for their allegiances and connections… well, so long as you didn’t get in the way of their work, they probably don’t see you as an enemy.

Within the mountains of Yamato are the buddhists of Hojo, a unique clan that uses monk warriors instead of samurai or shinobi. The Hojo clan are very disciplined in their teachings and operate quite differently from the other clans. Their modus operandi, at the end of the day, is self-actualization and betterment of the human. They cast aside mortal desires to achieve a higher state of existence. This means they attempt to abstain from mortal pleasures, and even their most outside of members will share this strict mindset. They are led by the best of their monks, Shogun Hojo no Takamune.

Based in the western end of the continent, the Ietake clan makes their presence known through their vigorous trading with the other clans and their relation to the Foreign Lands. These are Yamato’s merchants and politicians; with all the shrewdness of the kitsune and the greed of the dragons, the Ietakes own the markets and many riches along with it. But because of their focus on monetary value above all others, they’re known for their disloyalty and have a reputation for being a clan full of dishonorable scumbags… which isn’t untrue. The Ietake clan is also the weakest clan despite their economic power. They rely on hired mercenaries armed with their foreign steel to act as the clan’s military, which makes their forces disconnected and selfish, as well as not properly trained and lacking in a tactician’s mind. They tend to stay out of the disputes between clans and pick up the scraps. They are led by Shogun Ietake no Aguri.

Mechanics
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

This is a quick highlight of the mechanics of Komorebi you should know about for character creation. It is neither a full documentation, nor is it detailed. Please refer here for the full document of Komorebi's mechanics. If you have any suggestions or concerns, don't hesitate to tell me.

Overview
The game of Komorebi is based around engaging in a lot of combat, leveling up, and obtaining new powers. You'll later sacrifice those powers in order to obtain new power, and along the way you'll combat stronger enemies. Progression is centered around your equipment and gathering experience to level. You obtain new equipment through a number of ways, and you can gain experience from fighting, passing hard checks, or even just exploring as a general reward. Furthermore, some individual skills and abilities will come with a familiarity mechanic that'll allow you to make them stronger. Finally, your power is temporary. You can lose experience as well as gain it, just as you can lose equipment. It's important to manage your pacing in order to stay strong, especially if you have lofty goals.

Stats
There are two types of stats; Combat Stats, used in combat, and Social Stats, used in roleplay and for checks. Social Stats are simply flat values added by yourself, but Combat Stats aren’t quite as simple. They’re calculated using your Social Stats plus one other asset—all except for one, your Defense.

Attack
- Calculated with your weapon’s Damage plus your Physique stat divided by 2. Used for dealing physical damage to a target.
Technique
- Calculated with your weapon’s Damage plus your Finesse stat divided by 2. Used for dealing ranged/ability damage to a target.
Defense
- Calculated by doubling one piece of equipment’s AC. Used for defending against physical damage.
Speed
- This is more of a psuedo-stat; Speed is the measure of your character’s… well, speed, for the round. It’s calculated with your Agility plus a 2d8 roll. If it’s over 20, you’ll be provided one extra space to move and one extra action to spend as you’d like.

Physique
- Measure of the character’s physical strength.
- Uses; carry limit, determining ATK, strength checks
Intellect
- Measure of the character’s knowledge.
- Uses; intelligence checks
Finesse
- Measure of the character’s aptitude.
- Uses; aiming, determining TEC, finesse checks
Agility
- Measure of the character’s dexterity.
- Uses; dodging, determining SPD, determining movement, dexterity checks
Presence
- Measure of the character’s charms.
- Uses; checks, all charisma checks ever
Insight
- Measure of the character’s wisdom.
- Uses; defending against Spiritual Ailments, seeing traps, wisdom checks
Willpower
- Measure of the character’s mental strength.
- Uses; defending against Mental Ailments, willpower checks
Constitution
- Measure of the character’s endurance.
- Uses; carry limit, determining SP, defending against Ailments, constitution checks

Weight Limit
Characters can only carry so much before the weight of their greed gets to them. Your weight limit is determined by [(Con+(Phy/2)+4)*6]. When you exceed over your weight limit, you will suffer from Over-Encumbered at all times until you’re below your weight limit.

Targeting
Targeting is important in combat. If you target the right parts of an enemy, you can hit them for massive damage or bypass their defenses easier to strike at weaker armor. There are four places you can attack on your typical enemy and each place modifiers your chances of hitting them.

Head
Overall Accuracy: Greater than 4.
Effects: Chance to inflict Daze (2), 12% Damage increase, Attack measured against target’s Head Armor

Torso
Overall Accuracy: Greater than 0.
Effects: None, Attack measured against target’s Chest Armor

Arms
Overall Accuracy: Greater than 3.
Effects: Chance to inflict Bleed (3), 8% Damage increase, Attack measured against target’s Wrist Armor

Legs
Overall Accuracy: Greater than 2.
Effects: Chance to inflict Down (3), 4% Damage increase, Attack measured against target’s Leg Armor

The Battlefield
A 15x15 map is generated for the battlefield. Tokens are added in as necessary to represent entities in the battle, and the map will be regularly updated to cover movement and other effects. (Movement, by the way, is determined via [3+Agility/2].)

Battlefields consist of Ranges and Terrain.
Ranges are used as a measure of distance between you and a target. They have active effects on what you can or can’t do in battle. The battlefield’s Terrain will add special effects to the battlefield that could benefit or hinder combatants in combat. They are also directly manipulable and control of the Terrain could give further control of the battlefield.

Mechanics. Contains the full documentation of Komorebi's mechanics. currently unfinished and probably will always be unfinished. until like. maybe halfway in the game.
Lore. I'd recommend giving this a look through, though right now it only has brief lore bits on the families.

Example Character
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Name: Yu
Age: 20
Former Clan: Minamoto
Appearance: Image
Sex: Female
Personality: Yu is a quiet shinobi formerly of the Minamoto clan. She could be described as aloof and intelligent with an air of mystery around her... but she's really far more simple than she appears. She was taught at a young age to be a great shinobi, so violence and pragmatism is all she knows. Now as a ronin, Yu finds herself to be lost from her original purpose. What pushes her to keep fighting? What's keeping her going, when all she knew has abandoned her? She doesn't know.

Backstory: Yu was born to Kirei and Sakura Minamoto, experienced and retired shinobi in the clan. Kirei, her father, doubled as a trainer and made sure to teach her everything he could once she was old enough, making her a much more skilled trainee than all the others during her schooling. She was seen as a prodigy for both her attitude and her ability. This reputation and her skill would stay with her in her older years when she became a fully commissioned shinobi...

In her first year, she'd wake up in terrible pain as a sudden branding was etched onto her wrist. The Sigil had claimed her, and it wasn't long before her clan suddenly turned on her in an attempt to end her life. Yu was forced to slay former friends in her escape, fueled by an alien desire to survive even despite the orders told for her to die. She ran and ran as far as she could, and later ended up forsaking her code of loyalty and becoming a mercenary. All while cursing her ill fate and wondering just who she had to kill for this curse upon her.

She's recently conscripted with a mercenary group—her Oni curse hidden of course—and now travels with them from place to place working any job requested of her.

Sex: Female

Personality: Mizuki is a fiery soul with a fierce personality. She abides no BS and with tell others what she thinks without a second thought. While abrasive, she is incredibly loyal to her comrades and master. She has a true warrior’s spirit willing to fight to the bitter end for what she believes is right. Though events in her life have clouded her sense of righteousness with a haze of anger and burning desire for retribution for those who have wronged her.

Backstory: Mizuki was raised to be a strong warrior like her parents before her. Both served as guards protecting the border between Taira territory and the Yamato Estate. Born in a small village north of the Taira/Yamato border, she saw firsthand the Yamato clan’s arrogance and sloth. When Yamato nobles crossed the border, the showed Mizuki’s parents barely any respect. They would harass her mother, feeling her up like she was one of their concubines. While they spoke of her father the way one speaks of a beast of burden. Seeing the supposed head clan of the land treat her parents, her people with such disrespect filled the young girl with anger and resentment.

When Mizuki turned 18, it was finally her time to start working as a border guard during the day. However at night, she gathered with other members of the Taira clan to vent about the Yamato clan as well as their own shogun’s continued loyalty to the weakening clan. The airing of grievances soon escalated to talk of retribution against the Yamato clan and the possibility of replacing the Taira clan’s shogun with a stronger leader. As their group grew and plans started to cement, they attracted the attention of the Shogun’s personal guard. Mizuki and her compatriots were quickly apprehended and branded as radicals. In captivity, Mizuki was tortured for 30 days and 30 nights without rest. On the 30th day she learned that it was her own family that had turned them in. Her so-called compatriots had turn on her in the first day. . Going so far as to embellish Mizuki actual plans to make her out to be a crazed mass murderer. Her name tarnished, she was set to be executed on the 31th day of her capture. But the young warrior was not content to let her story end this way. Luring a guard into her cell, she stole a blade and made her escape. She slew countless of her former countrymen in an attempt to escape. Finally with her back to the river, Mizuki prepared to make her last stand. But before she could strike, one of her former compatriots attacked cleaving her right arm just past the elbow. While another almost slashed her left eye clean out. The force of the two attacks sent Mizuki reeling back as she tumbled into the raging river.

When she came to along the banks of the river, Mizuki tried to move her body only to be struck with immeasurable pain. Moving under mere force of will, Mizuki stood and walked a few steps before collapsing again. The second time she awoke, the pain was dissipating. Her stump of a right arm had stopped bleeding but there was still this searing pain in her left eye. Going to the river, she looked to assess her condition. She couldn’t see through her left eye anymore, but she could see what had happened to it with her right. In place of her normal iris was the Sigil of the Oni coloured red against a black sclera. The realization slowly dawned on Mizuki of the terrible curse inflicted upon her. But it merely garnered a small laugh from her. She was already at rock bottom. There was nowhere lower for her to sink. Taking the blade she had stolen, she set forth to find a new purpose for her life.

Name: Miho Ran
Former Clan: Tiara
Appearance:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image

Sex:Female
Personality:A staunch traditionalist, she finds the idea of these new and changing times repulsive, anathema to herself but driven to clear her name and curse to restore her families honour.

Backstory:

Miho comes from a rural Samurai family, her father once lauded as a pinnacle of honour and tradition for forgoing wealth for duty. At one time honour, loyalty and great deeds was all the family needed, at one time even the late Emperor and Shogun Taira no Murakumo had sent their sons to study at their Dojo. Now, the wealthier Samurai families and those in other clans make snide comments behind closed door about a poor, old man who clings to the past.

Without any sons of his own, the honour of family came to rest of Miho and her father made sure she would not disappoint in any regard. If she was going to carry the family name and school on her shoulders she would have to do so as any man would. Training alongside the men and boys at her father's school, she was pushed harder than them, never noticing the jealous eyes or lustful gazes on her athletic figure. It is rumoured even the sons of the Emperor and Shogun once lusted after their Master's daughter.

That too changed with fortunes of the time and fate, the late Emperor passed and his son took the throne, demons walked the land and there was no time for the that peaceful patch of countryside and the school. Who needed to master the sword when there was the vile magics and Oni, without the draw of Imperial or Shogun patronage the school fell out of relevance. While it broke her father's heart, her mother was secretly delighted, hoping to regain her daughter from the warrior she'd been shaped into. This to came to naught, she was too strong willed for many to see her as a wife (as she had been taught to be) and family to could raise no significant dowry to attract wealthier families.

Recently her father received a summons to the Emperor, the excitement breathing new life into the man. Assuring himself that his former student had not forgotten about him after all and with trouble caused by changes to fabric of society, her father is sure things are returning to the old ways, and who better to advise the king on such matters than him. As requested on the invitation, Miho as heir of the family name and school was to dutifully accompany her father on the trip.

They travelled with little procession as they went and Miho was surprised when they came upon the Shogun's son upon the road, travelling incognito with his guards to the capital under summons much like them. Miho had blushed slightly when she saw him, noticing the man the boy had become, always having been too busy training to notice before. When they stopped at the border that night, purchasing rooms at an inn, Miho had trouble sleeping so took a walk in the cool night air, finding her old friend taking the same stroll. They talked of old times, old training partners or as Shogun's son put it, old friends and Miho had felt a strange sensation build inside her for the first time as they walked so closely... until she heard the voices.

The voices were boisterous, angry, but treasonous. What choice had she but to report the villainous guards who had forsaken their oaths of loyalty and honour. She she thought her father would approve, but instead he flew into a furry about her being out at the night with the Shogun's son and how she could have brought dishonour on the family and accusing her of trying to climb above her station. She had left his rooms in tears, deciding to leave him with his fury and give him time and she was on the street when she saw it happen.

The Shogun's son walking down the street, the sudden barking of thunder despite a clear sky, a flash of fire and the man falling.... the sudden silence afterwards that seemed to last minutes instead of seconds as the shock evaporated... the man rising, bleeding from a cut across his brow, his guards pulling him to safety...

She had run back to her father's room but froze in shock at what she saw inside. Her father on his knees, his guts spilled out and a tanto in his lifeless hands. She had been taught about seppuku, been instructed how to carry it out... but to see it... smell it... her own father. She couldn't bear to read the poem wrapped around the blade, instead her eyes locked onto the strange black metal pipe thing in front of him as well. Smelling of sulfur, she had heard of this strange contraption, a dishonorable weapon from across that spat fire and metal with a black powder. Then she felt a splitting pain and thud on the back of her neck.

She wasn't sure how long she was out when she came to, lent up against a tree in the forest with the severed ropes that had been used to hold her in place fallen around her sides. Her traveling pack and sword rested nearby and another black metal pipe was tucked under the waist of her tobi. She hissed with pain as she stood, a flaring agony splitting up from her ass, when she checked she saw a strange brand on her left ass cheek that still seamed to glow slighty as if still burning. Not knowing where she was she stumbled to nearest village to discover that an old Samurai (her father) had been accused of attempting assassinate the Tiara Shogun's son and his Samurai's daughter had fled justice and was declared outlaw and Ronin.

Name: Akako
Former Clan: Ietake
Age: 25
Appearance:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image

Sex: Female
Personality: Akako by default is rather brusque, having no time for games and beating around the bush. She’d rather cut to the quick of things and move on to the next commission rather than do the word dance. If necessary (as in the client is too important to piss off), she can adapt a rather more bubbly personality who is more suited to dealing with that. Giggly, personable, with just enough airheaded qualities to sell her act, she doesn’t like donning this personality and will throw it off as soon as possible. If Akako feels wronged by someone, she becomes excessively cruel, doing whatever she can to make them suffer as greatly as possible.

Backstory: Akako’s life was determined at birth by her parents. She was to make use of the ancestral forge to create weapons. Endless weapons of the highest quality so that the family’s wealth would increase, their standing improving along with it. From the moment she could walk, she had a blacksmith’s hammer in her hands, acclimating her to the weight of her tools. From the moment she could talk, she was taught the art of making a sale and pleasing customers. When she did well, she was given a generous allowance and when she didn’t, she was beaten. Such was her existence for the first 10 years of her life. From then on, it became about teaching her the forge and how to master the family craft. She enjoyed that portion of her training so much more than having to interact with customers. It didn’t hurt that it felt like it was what she was meant to do, the hammer at this point feeling like nothing but an extension of herself. She didn’t start churning masterworks from the beginning. Her initial works were barely good enough for kids to use as training toys. But given her passion for the forge, it wasn’t long before she began to produce weapons and armor that even the snobbish Yamato would slaver at.

That was of course when things began to go wrong. After all, one does not get to the top of the economic food chain by allowing competition to wander in unchallenged. By age 18, other families began doing whatever they could to sabotage her work to ruin her reputation or assimilate it into their own. Damaging her forge, attempting to seduce her into a marriage, going so far as to attempt to take her life. In one memorable instance, someone attempted to rape her and plotted to use the resulting child to force her into marrying the father. She became very good at either recognizing a bad situation, getting the hell out of dodge when the situation developed, or talking her way out of it. She just made her weapons after all, she wasn’t trained in their use very much. Akako started becoming a reclusive, nervous wreck, seeing attacks on her art from all corners and trusting very few. It got to the point where she did not sleep without her hammer and tongs in her hands and a blade under her pillow, her father or his trusted guard armed and nearby in case she failed to wake in time. She refused to let her art in the forge suffer because of this, however. If anything, the frantic energy, as if this would be the last piece she would ever make, only improved her weapons and armor pieces.

This ended at age 25 when, in yet another attempt to demoralize and destroy Akako, one of her competitors slew her mother. They very quickly learned that this was a mistake. Using the influence she had gained with her work, she tracked down the murderer by the day’s end, along with anyone who had a hand in that plot. The next 48 hours, the sound of screams sounded thorough out without pause. If it was not one person venting their agony, it was another. No one knows exactly how she tortured and broke those poor souls. All they know is that by the time the screaming stopped, there were 6 broken, burnt and bloody corpses in pieces and 1 still living woman in a very similar condition strung up in the town center as if in warning. A day later, she found the Sigil of the Oni on the back of her right hand. Easily hideable with her blacksmith’s gloves, but given how the last 7 years have been people trying to find any way at all to destroy her, she decided it was inadvisable to hang around and let people discover it. Better that they think she finally got sick of the attempts on her mind and life after venting it on the idiots who killed her mother. Taking very little but the hammer that was as much a part of her as her arm itself, she left in the dead of night.

Name: Katsu
Former Clan: Hojo
Appearance:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Katsu.jpg

Sex: Female
Personality: Once a naive and optimistic monk in training from the Hojo Clan, life has had some rather unfortunate plans for Katsu. In many ways she is still oblivious to the workings and details of the wider world and is typically never the smartest person in the room. She is, however, wilful and for more realistic about life outside the mountains after her first few years of exile. While she still doesn't value material gain as anything more than a means to an end, she has grown to accept that acquiring it seems to be a necessary burden, even if she often longs for the simplicity of life as a monk.

Backstory: Taken in at too young an age to remember her life before the being part of the Hojo Clan, Katsu was raised in near complete isolation by the monks after being rescued from a Yokai attack on a small settlement near the foot of the mountains. As a result, her view on the world has been shaped by the monks and their teachings and while she tried to uphold their values she was still as brash and hotheaded as any child.

She showed early signs of prowess in martial training, having desired to become as skilled as the monks that saved her that fateful day. Perhaps a part of her urge to become a warrior of renown came from a hidden desire to be sent out into the wider world and have an opportunity to sate her steadily growing curiosity of what was really out there, but more so than anything else she was driven by the need to prove to the clan that she was capable of repaying her rescue tenfold. While this led to her often topping her classes in terms of martial prowess, her success in combat training only fanned the flames of her ego and distracted her from other aspects of the monks' teachings.

Trying in earnest, she struggled with the spiritual studies of the Hojo clan. While she wants little of material value she was hardly the best at cultivating the spiritual insight and wisdom the monks hoped to instil in the younger generation. Often taken up with fantasies of becoming a great warrior that could fight of the Yokai or any other threat that would encroach on the mountains of Yamato, as well as a desire to actually experience the wider world, Katsu would wander the mountains. She would trek out on her own spiritual journeys on hikes to various mountain peaks, able to experience what wonders she could taste of the wider world while also honing her body in the process. However her distracted nature would often get her into trouble, and while her masters would scold her, she never blamed them and was grateful for their efforts. Being raised and trained by the very people that had saved her life... in many ways she idolised them and kept making an effort to prove to them that she could succeed.

All hopes of achieving her dreams were changed when the mark appeared. She awoke in the night from the feeling of it appearing upon her skin on her left arm. She had hoped the monks would be able to provide answers, but the looks they shared when she showed it to them only made her fearful all the more so. Her life at the monastery was over and the monks locked her up while they discussed what to do with her. If it wasn't for the intervention of the monk who had saved her life returning once more before they reached a decision, they might have executed her or kept her locked up forever. Clearly even some of the more experienced monks weren't above sentiment as he went behind their backs to break Katsu out and send her on her way, telling her to remember her teachings and let them guide her on her journeys across the world.

For the next few months Katsu had been plunged into a world that she knew nothing about and was flailing for air. She tried to use her martial training to find work, but people rarely offered coin for a warrior with no blade. She was surprised by just how materially focused the rest of the world was. It was a drastic contrast from life with the Hojo clan. The way people worked, talked... even the way certain men looked at her... it was all with a greed and material lust that her life before had not prepared her for. She had been approached several times by people trying to coax her into bed, freezing up whenever she felt their hands on her body. Occasionally they would offer coin when she refused and as the hungry nights rolled by and work became harder to find their offers became more and more agreeable.

She cursed... both herself and her ill fate... as she gave up the last of her innocence and failed to uphold her final promise to her master. Even while she worked, she kept her mark hidden with a white band, however sometimes she wished she could tear it off so she would be driven out and have a chance to start over. Her opportunities fell away as each day working in a bed past by, all the while men that were welcomed as warriors for hire by the locals came through, using her while they stayed. Her reputation was secured as the village whore and while she tried to keep up with her training and focus, the next couple of years of being fucked by more successful travellers or hired out for young men's birthdays had led to her martial training and spiritual guidance becoming even more relaxed. It seemed like this really was to be her fate... when she got a chance to show what she was capable of when bandits attacked the village.

They attacked in the night, so most the village slept. Except Katsu, who was entertaining three travelling ronin. When the bandits came, the ronin were too flustered and uncoordinated, unable to swiftly switch from wetting their cocks to fighting for their lives and two were cut down before they could even draw their weapons and the third didn't last much longer. Katsu, however, switched in a moment, pulling free from her bedfellows and fighting for her life. Her training and her focus started to return to her, as if by instinct... and she had a lot of pent up aggression to take out on these bandits. She fought her way through the group and miraculously started to drive the bandits back from the village, but not before she found herself challenged by their leader. This was a tougher warrior than those that came before and was soon victorious, but instead of taking Katsu's life, he offered her a place with his people. A part of her told her that this would be straying too far from her old teachings, but she largely felt she had no further left to stray and agreed. While her nights were sometimes spent in this bandit chief's bed, at day she was regarded by her new band of outlaws as a warrior worthy of respect and it seemed life once again had opportunities to present to Katsu.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Sex: Female
Personality: Formerly from a family of shrine maidens, as such grown up to be quite reserved, but in battle she's overcome with a quiet intensity and small amount of pleasure.
Backstory: Mikiko joined the Ashikaga clan as an outsider from Hojo lands. Her family was originally one of the few Shinto places of worship in the heavily buddhist region; while her family never held any animocity to the monks in their monastery the reverse didnt seem to be true, at least not to Mikiko's eyes. Her family was forcibly removed from their shrine for yokai worship(which may or not be true) but as a result she and her mother and older sister left, though due to difficulty on the road Mikiko was seperated from her mother and older sister eventually found on the road nearly dead by a kunoichi and brought back to the woman's village where she would then become a rather skilled kunoichi in her own right.

Her new mentor was one of the mysterious Ashikaga she would discover sometime later when her own training was complete and she attended her first true mission along side the woman, while the mission involved only some minor yokai it was still quite the experience for the young woman. For the first time she had to harm something else, not in self defense but for pay. By the end of it with blood-stained tantos Mikiko would find that she quietly enjoyed the hunt and the thrill of battle, though she wouldnt show it.

After a few years of working underneath her mentor Mikiko was given permission to operate independently and from there she would go to make a name for herself among the Ashikaga as a dutiful shinobi who always completed the mission, she would even go to run a few missions for the shogun's retainers, but her life would change when she developed yokai's sigil. Thankfully none of the Ashikaga clan members would discover this, but she knew that if she stuck around she would be killed for it. As such she's decided now would be the time to seek out her former family and possibly her mentor whos told her that she has found employment under new masters.

Name: Izumi
Former Clan: Minamoto
Age: 21
Appearance:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image

Sex: Female
Personality: Izumi generally has a quiet, stoic, and rather cold demeanor. Her Shinobi training has taught her to be more personable, and even seductive when she feels the situation calls for it, but in general her loyalty and love is reserved strictly for members of her family. Her first instinct is often to solve her issues with violence, as a dead obstacle will never block her path again. Izumi will always take the straightest path to her goal, and her goal has always been to help her family prosper over all others, even the Shogun to whom she swore an oath.

Backstory: Abandoned at a very young age, a girl wandered the Minamoto clan's territory on the brink of death until she was found by Akihito, a merchant who's village she had collapsed in. Though by no means wealthy, he was successful enough that he was able to take the girl in, at least temporarily. For Akihito, it was simply a meal and a place to spend the night in a spare room, but for the girl it was the only act of kindness she had ever been shown in her life. She quickly became attached to Akihito and his family, and they found her affection to be rather endearing. Perhaps if she had nowhere else to go, she could stay with them as a live in servant? The family let the girl stay with them under that assumption for a time, until one day when their youngest son came home in tears. He told Akihito that one of the other boys in the village had attacked him and the girl had jumped to his defense. When Akihito found them, the village boy was badly beaten and the girl was still hitting him while he was down, such was her rage that one had dared to harm one of her beloved saviors, until Akihito pulled her away.

The other villagers were horrified by the display of savage violence, but Akihito found himself moved that this girl would go so far for he and his family. He decided then that this girl would be no mere servant, her loyalty had earned her a place in the family and gave her a name, Izumi. But though Akihito was determined to make Izumi a member of his family, the rest of the village was firmly opposed to her staying, fearing further violence against their children. Rather than hope that they did not matters into their own hands, Akihito had a different idea. He would give Izumi to the Minamoto Shogunate, as they were often recruiting for shinobi training at a young age. "They will want you to swear loyalty to the Shogun, and you will do so, but in your heart, your loyalty will always remain here with your family." He told her, in hopes that her fierce love of the family would ensure that she return to them when her training was complete. For her part, Izumi was heartbroken to be sent away and didn't understand why, but she took her new father's words to heart. Perhaps she wasn't useful enough to him? In that case, if this training would rectify that, then she would devote every fiber of her being to it.

The training was brutal, not only was she trained in stealth and combat, but shinobi were also trained to resist torture in case they failed in their mission, and as a kunoichi, Izumi was also trained in seduction and information extraction. There were many who did not survive, or couldn't stand it anymore and attempted to flee, but Izumi kept her family in her thoughts and remained resolute until her training was complete. Even then, once she was a fully fledged shinobi, Izumi had been made to swear an oath of service to the Minamoto clan and was sent on espionage and assassination missions throughout Yamato. Whenever her duties did not call however, she would return home to visit her family in secret. Akihito would often ask her for information, as the kind of information she gathered could be invaluable to merchant in knowing what trade routes were safest or what goods were growing scarce and would be worth more in the future. Izumi was more than happy to divulge all this information, and more, still holding her promise to her father dear after all those years. She also did a lot of things Akihito did not ask her to, such as sabotaging and even assassinating competitors, or offering her body to suppliers in exchange for better deals for her father. Izumi did this without his knowledge, knowing that he would not approve, but their were no lengths she would not go to to see her family prosper.

Things were going well, Akihito's business was growing at an ever rapid pace, and as Izumi's skills increased, she was completing her missions even more quickly and getting to return home and spend more time with her beloved family. And then, the Sigil of the Oni appeared. Izumi recognized it immediately and consulted her father on what she should do. Akihito told her that he would protect her and help keep it a secret, but Izumi knew that being discovered would certainly lead to her banishment. No, if this woman in her dreams wanted help conquering Yamato, then she would have it, at least until Izumi could get close enough to extract information on how to remove the sigil from her. She fled Minamoto in secret and set out on her search. Izumi had a place where she belonged now, and no one would keep from it and get away with it unscathed.

Name: Kagehoshi
Former Clan: Ashikaga
Age: 20
Appearance:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image

Sex: Female
Personality: Born from the Ashikaga, Kagehoshi is all that embodies her clan: secretive, anti- social and paranoid. She's the type to passively observe before making a comment, if she decided to comment at all. Most words that come out of her mouth is usually some sort of combination of cold, mocking and cynical. She's the type to act without any input from others, and usually will keep her actions to herself, especially if it screws over others instead of her. While she may come off as fiercely anti-social, deep down, she's actually quite lonely, but she'd never truly admit it.

Backstory: Hoshikage, or those who knew her true history would know as Eiko, was born in a rather minor family of the Ashikaga. Though her family was but a few branches away from the bloodline of the Shogun of Ashikaga himself, it was small and considered insignificant. It was due to the fact that the Ashikaga could use their arts to strengthen themselves and weapons to kill youkai, or else subjugate their wills to be tamed. Eiko's family could do neither, so they had to make do with the only thing they had: their wits.

It was nature that inspired them. A spider, in particular. To weave a web, a nest to not only protect themselves, but to lure other prey into to entrap. This was the art her family developed and mastered before passing it on to her. In time, she would learn to know her enemy, to stalk them and entrap them in wires that could bind or slice, attach talismans or drip poison, and even puppeteer corpses in order to kill youkai. In every kill, her pride in her family and devotion to her clan grew. Her family and her name alike would come up more and more often in clan meetings. She was offered to be a retainer under the Shogun himself, for her service and deeds to the clan.

Then the sigil appeared. A single moment that would refine everything. One moment she was the enemy of youkai. And in the next, she was considered no better than one. Her family urged her to commit suicide, to save family face. But the shogun ordered for her to be killed, her family executed and any references to her family line purged. She was the sole survivor.

Hunted to the ends of the lands, she threw away her name. She now stalked the lands, making a meagre existence by using her once famed thread wires to hunt small animals. The isolation and paranoia she was being hunted seeded hatred in her heart for her clan. She was conflicted. Was she to hate her clan now? Love the youkai? It couldn't be, not after the slaughter of so many by her own hands. She wanted none of this, none of this situation that had led her down this path. She wanted to throw it all away. But she couldn't bring herself to throw away her family's legacy, the only thing that had survived purging.

Now, she lived a quiet life, away from people, high in the mountain forests far from her home. Her only contact was with a small village she would trade with every so often. Her name now was Hoshikage, in remembrance of the glimmer of wires on a moonless night. But fate would have other plans for her.

Name: Kiyo "Aguri"
Former Clan: Inazumi
Age: 18
Appearance: X
Sex: Female
Personality: Soft spoken and reserved , Kiyo doesn't really interact with other people beyond what is necessary. Because of this can be very easily perceived as stand offish and submissive. However, underneath that quiet exterior is a beast inside, one that grows rabid and hungry in a fight.
Backstory: Kiyo was born in a situation very similar to most who lived in the Inazumi clan. In a fairly poor family who owned barely tamed beasts waiting to be unleashed on their enemies. Because of this she was also taught how to loosely tame the creatures of the surrounding wilderness at a early age. Her parents and other relatives generally couldn't extend the taming beyond a simple trade of food and protection that was always threatening to be shattered. Yet very early on Kiyo could tame creatures to a far greater extent, often making them do things her parents didn't think was possible, just as retrieving stuck items or preforming tricks. Though as a trade off, Kiyo never seemed to be able to form a true relationship with her family. Always seeming distant and uninterested in the dealings of their local rivals or allies. Instead she always preferred hanging out with her every growing number of tamed pets, far exceeding any amount anyone in her village could've tamed at once at just the age of 10.

This became harder to sustain however when she became 15 and her parents were killed by a rival family in their village. Though she found it somewhat hard to care about that despite the fact food for all her pets was suddenly hard to come by, and even with the bonds she made she had to leave before they decided she would be their next meal. She managed to keep a smaller coyote by her side however, and for the next 3 years she lived as a wanderer, going from village to village mostly for a place to stay and nothing else. A life she quickly grew tired of. After her coyote died shortly after she turned 18, she was alone, and unable to find a stable living. After becoming starved and weathered, she was ready to die with nothing to her name but a dead rabbit which was barely edible and some the clothes she had since she was 15. Then a walking shark appeared. Even Kiyo was flabbergasted by the sight. It was a shark with big legs and arms that was just prancing around like it owned the grasslands. As a desperate measure to keep from dying alone, she called out to the shark and fed it her rabbit, naming it Big Tuna Kahuna. A absurd name for a absurd creature. She had successfully made a new friend, but instead of starving to death, she found she had a sigil on her arm. One she had never seen before, but recognized instantly. She had laughed when she saw it. She was a Oni, her, of all people. She had no idea why she became one, or how. Nor did she care. She just knew that maybe now she would have the chance to continue on and make some more friends.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Name: "Sharkie" Big Tuna Kahuna
Owner: Kiyo
Appearance:
Image
Sex: Haz big dick
Personality: Big Tuna Kahuna is a Shark who was infected by a parasitic Yokai. The result is a flamboyant, muscular, friendly, Shark-man who enjoys prancing through meadows, posing, flexing, and eating. Naturally, with such a disposition, it was easy for Kiyo to make friends with him by sharing her rabbit.

hey guys. i want to rq apologize for letting the rp die out. i had some personal stuff going on and i was losing motivation, but it's really no excuse to let it go hanging without any definitive word at all. i've been thinking about everything i had planned for the rp and i've been finding motivation to try again, so i wanted to raise the question to anyone in or out of the rp if they want to see a revival.

i'm not sure how i'll be doing it exactly. we never got that far from the start so it's possible to just continue where we left off (maybe add anyone new interested since we've got spots open), but i might outright remake it using all the same materials and/or story, if refined to a better degree and newer. if there's any interest in reviving it, we can talk about that to see what'd be for the best. if any of this interests you, then here's a link to a strawpoll. i figured some may prefer it to be anonymous, but if you'd rather just state interest in a message, feel free to do that here too. i really appreciate any responses in any way.
