The Thing....(In Space) OOC (Recruiting)

Postby exalted » Mon Oct 31, 2016 12:50 pm

Seeing as the other RP of this nature never seemed to get off the ground and I'm not gming anything right now I thought I'd take a crack at it

"I know I'm human. And if you were all these things, then you'd just attack me right now, so some of you are still human. This thing doesn't want to show itself, it wants to hide inside an imitation. It'll fight if it has to, but it's vulnerable out in the open. If it takes us over, then it has no more enemies, nobody left to kill it. And then it's won."
-Macready

TL;DR:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Survival Horror style game based loosely on John Carpenter's classic movie "The Thing". PvP, aliens, probably some tentacle rap, flame throwers and Kurt Russel characters 8-) .

Concept:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

This will be a PvP game with NPCs thrown in to round out numbers and create a bit more intrigue. At the start one PC or NPC is The Thing. The Thing's job is to kill or convert all humans, or if discovered at point where it can't win to escape.

Human players will not know who the The Thing at the start of the game, but may try to discover it during the game. Human players will also be given numerous challengers to complete during the game in order to split them up and give The Thing a chance.

This will be somewhat short burn, with new games starting after the old one ends.

System:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

To keep the survival horror vibe going, I'm going to be using a blind system, which means there's a system but I'll be keeping details and dice rolls under wraps.

At it's core The Thing will most likely defeat humans in a one on one hand to hand fight. Two would be a struggle unless it gets creative with its tactics and three is most likely a losing fight. The Thing will be given a set of abilities to help in its fight. Should the The Thing defeat a human, sexy fun times will begin and that human will also become a thing after a set time, depending on the defeat, with a reduced set of abilities.

Humans will have 3 basic classes:

1) Guard - the fighter's of the group, best at trying to defeat The Thing, can used ranged weapons.
2) Engineers - the fixers of the group, needed to complete many of the tasks that will be given.
3) Scientists - the group healers and ones able to start identifying The Thing.

A group of NPCs will be added to cover in gaps in the group so feel free to play what you want.

A fourth class known, Specialists, will be used also but only by NPC character. These Specialists will have a range of abilities to help and hinder the group in order to advance plot.

Secrecy:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Cloak and dagger plays and important part of this story, the paranoia of trying to figure out who is against you. To this end I would prefer players post replies using "spoilers" and ask you only read the GM posts for the area of the map they are in and the posts of other players from that area. This is an honour system, but if I feel a player is gaming the system there may well be penalties

This is also the reason for the NPC characters as things can and will happen off screen.

Character Sheet:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Name:
Age:
Gender:
Description:

Job: (Feel free to get creative on this, the character class might just represent non job skills or role in the story, i.e. MacReady was the helicopter pilot, but would have the guard class in this. I'll give bonuses to rolls relating to your characters occupation)
Class:
Drawback: (These stories will take place in remote places, something has brought you here. Maybe you are running from something or just want to get lost. What made you shun society, i.e. Alcoholic, sex addict, loner, disgraced, 5 days to retirement)

You are the crew of the Dark Star, a privately owned deep space monitoring and rescue vessel. You have just received automated distress call from a Norwegian Science Research ship, seeking immediate aid. Arriving on scene three days later you find the ship, all systems offline and running on emergency power. No one answers your hails.

MacReady used to stare at the blackness of space and feel her ass grow fatter in zero G for the government, and didn't get paid enough to do it. The isolation never really bothered her much, she preferred to be by herself playing chess with a bottle of scotch by her side, meant there were less idiots around. As soon as her tour was up, she signed on with a private rescue vessel that was looking for a combat experienced pilot.

MacReady's one regret about leaving the service was she wouldn't get a chance to pay back her old team mates. The pricks having sabotaged her chess program so that it now cheated and hiding on blowup companion in her luggage.

The Dark Star:

The Dark Star is a Deep Space Monitoring and Rescue Vessel, operated by the Yeyland-Wutani corporation. Due to often fatal nature of deep space accidents, Yeyland-Wutani DSMRVs are also equipped for and tasked with salvage and towing operations. The companies policy of paying a percentage of the salvage value to the DSMRV crews had led to allegations of piracy or neglect of survivors occasioning death, but nothing has ever been substantiated. Yeyland-Wutani defends its policy by claiming it incentivizes crews to do a thankless job by cleaning up space junk.

Each DSMRV has a crew of 17:
1x Ship's Captain
4x Officers (XO, Engineering, Communications, Medical)
12x Assorted Crew
1x Ships Pet

Ships Pets have become common place on DSMRVs, their purpose to alleviate stress and help relax the crew.

Ship Map:

Alterations:
5 - Officer's quarters
6 - Captain's quarters
7 and 8 - Crews's Quarters, 6 racks per room.

Slight to bump to see if there is any interest as the other RP seems to have died again.

I mean, I would obliviously be interested. I dont think an rp like this can work however, it simply requires too much dedication from too many people, everytime i tried to launch my version of this someone would suddenly back out, or some people would just take weeks to get back to me. It's really a shame as I think this PvP style could really be something truly unique on here, but it's just too much of scheduling nightmare. Your idea of NPC's definitely is an improvement i hadn't thought of which would make it more plausible. I am currently working on another variant of this, on and off. My goal is to greatly increase the simplicity to hopefully increase interest.

The hope is/was that with the NPCs there would only be the need for a few players a minimum, thinking 2-3 players min to make it work as it would allow people to ease into the paranoia instead of going crazy right at the start. If this can get interest I believe the NPCs will smooth a lot of issues with secrecy and scheduling on players
