Since it's discovery within the Ethereal realm, the Nexus has been theorized to have existed for all time. It is a monumental and luminescent pillar in an otherwise fuzzy and dull realm. While the Nexus is completely imperceptible from the material plane, it's location has been firmly marked in the world by the grand city known only as Academy. Unlike most cities, all of Academy's inhabitants are foreigners from elsewhere, as living in Academy is now so much a status as it is an occupation. As it's name might suggest, Academy is a studious and regulated place, that favors knowledge and neutrality. The purpose of Academy is primarily to house the Nexus, and to protect it and it's role in universal balance. Secondary to that goal is the desire acquire knowledge through the exploration and manipulation of planes and transplanar devices. Even religious type are not unheard of within Academy, as the followers of Divine are eager to be more in touch with the sphere of their own deity, but extremist practices are rarely tolerated within the walls of Academy, and when they are it is under great supervision.
There are many roles for citizens within Academy, from the martial to the magical. There are the Academy monks who seek universal enlightenment through the mastery of planar ki forces. There are the Academy warriors who travel alongside the explorers of the planes, either to serve as protectors for a greater purpose, or to simply test their mettle against strange planar beings. Of course, there are the wizards and sorcerers, the primary students of Academy who research the many themes and energies of all the planes through their mastery of magic. There are also the less renown entertainers and hunters of Academy; their purpose is mainly for practicality and comfort, though they seem to find accolade in our cause. The clergy member who take up residence in Academy form to regulate their own members in the suburbs of Academy, for obvious reasons.
