Splices: A pair of pure black wolf ears sit upon Eve’s head, the results of a curse stemming back many ages ago. Eve hides this feature with her hairstyle.
Legacy. A high-powered Laser SMG from her father's law enforcement days, many little adjustments have been made for Eve to now tote it as her main-go-to gun. Boasting of a higher output strength and magazine capacity than your usual run-of-the-mill gun, this gun has seen much action in her father's hands, now passed on as a Legacy to his daughter.
It serves to remind Eve of familial bonds, a memento of happier days gone by. A worn out insignia of the District Eleven Security "D11Sec" can still be faintly seen upon the weapon's stock.
Altas MKV - The workhorse of long knives, the Altas MKV is a highly durable blade extending out about eighteen inches in length, comfortably placing it within the category of a shortsword. Built with "indestructible" as it's tagline, the Altas MKV might not be the most precise nor sharpest of blades but instead works as an all-round utility blade. Besides, everything dies the same when you decapitate it. Highly effective, decapitation.
Several lines are scratched out upon the blade near the guard, as if counting the lives this blade has claimed so far..a total of fifteen?
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
The Family Graele. A long line of tragedy follows this cursed bloodline, stemming back from the days when Karnaca, one of the greatest civilizations of mankind still existed. But for all of Karnaca’s advanced military technology and might, they were helpless in the face of Overlord Bayrios’ Edict of Thunder. That very day a month after Bayrios’ warning, Karnaca ceased to exist from the system.
Their forebears had been cautious enough to evacuate a few days before, but it didn't end there for them. Having Karnaca, their entire world taken from them was but a drop of water in the sea. The Graeles had much bigger problems to deal with.
Human nature is often ugly. Horrifyingly so. What could lead a man, so consumed within his own emotion that he would condemn an entire bloodline, cursed never to find peace for eternity? That story has long been lost to the events that continually befell the Graeles.
May you never find peace. Only Death will be your sole companion to the end.
That was the fate that awaited all members of the family. A single sentence of warning, passed down through the generations. There would be no fighting against it. There would be no resistance against such an intangible thing. You would only wait for your time to come and till then, pray that it was painless when it did.
"..Dad, that's a horrible story. I mean, curses? In this day and age?"
Evelynn Graele. The Graele's second youngest daughter. Born to Matthias Graele and Sofia Auri, the family of three eked out a happy living upon Ainheim IV, an advanced technological planet under Bayrios’ dominion. Ainheim IV was mainly comprised of a gigantic metropolis city, which was then divided up into fifteen districts of equal size. Matthias had settled his family down in District Eleven, a relatively safe and crime-free district.
It was a simple and happy life for the three of them and with time, it would've been incredibly easy to just completely forget the curse that seemed to be a thing of the old now..if not for that accursed trait that stood out ever so prominently upon Eve's little head. A pair of ears that belonged to no human. A pair of wolf ears.
A constant reminder of her dark fate. It was something that could not be ignored, yet something that could not be guarded against.
But living in perpetual fear was not Matthias' way of living. He'd experienced enough hardship when his parents had perished in their untimely death. He was a man who understood the meaning of living life to the fullest.
Still, it would be plain stupidity to simply let things proceed as they were.
It would come. Inevitably. Matthias did have surviving family, an elder and younger sister by the names of Eleanor and Charlotte. Both of which he cherished dearly, people close to his heart. People he could trust to take care of Eve and Sofia if anything untoward happened to him.
He would smile grimly each time he recalled Eleanor's last words of warning before she had left Ainheim IV with their little sister in tow. And each time he looked upon the woman of his dreams, each time she gave him that warm, loving smile..he would tell himself that it was worth it.
Better to live your life as yourself than to reject everyone and anything else.
But he wouldn't take it lying down, just waiting for the curse to finish them off. It might be hopeless in the grand scheme, but every bit counted. Self-defense training. Martial arts classes. Marksmanship. Sigil practice and knowledge. Survival skills. All of these alongside going to school on a daily basis.
It was an upbringing many parents of current times would look on and regard as mercilessly harsh. They didn't know a thing. Let the spectators talk, for it was only Evelynn's survival that concerned him.
By now, he had steeled himself and told Sofia the truth. Getting beaten to an inch of his life for not telling her this earlier was not what he had expected. Rather, it had been his own fear that she would leave him...but Sofia was a far stronger woman than he could’ve ever imagined. With both her understanding and assistance, they both strove to garner the best odds they could achieve for their dear daughter. All while keeping the curse a secret from her, of course. The prospect of unavoidable, impending death was a terrifying notion that would cast its presence over Evelynn's mood. And letting their beloved girl live in despair was not what they wanted for her..
Poor Evelynn. Her training would only become harsher from thereon out.
The immature Eve would obviously complain, continually questioning this way of life. Why was a girl of a mere twelve years old stuck learning Sigil theory while her friends happily whiled their time away, watching the latest movies and comparing highscores on the newest reality shooters? Why did she have to wake up at ungodly hours and run ten freaking kilometers a day while her friends were snuggled up in their warm beds?
Neither Matthias nor Sofia would answer that question, although the pain in their expression and eyes was apparent even to her. They were keeping a great secret from her...and while it was agonizing to keep up with both training and schooling, she stopped complaining and instead threw herself headfirst into the training, learning to embrace it as a daily routine. Her mastery of combat arts increased exponentially as she started taking a keen interest in her studies.
If neither of her parents was going to tell her what was going on, she would just have to prove herself worthy of knowing...
Two years would quickly pass by, with Eve graduating from her school as the top student. The curse had seemingly not touched her at all, for whatever reason...although the same could not be said for her dear father.
Matthias worked a dangerous career; holding a significant position as Inspector in District Security, a department that policed the District and enforced Ainheim IV’s laws.
The man lived by his own moral code and was steadfast in his work. He was incorruptible, not tempted by bribes in the slightest and you certainly wouldn't be able to persuade him to turn a blind eye to any ongoing crimes.
Such a man was a big target for the various crime gangs within District Eleven. Their activities were mostly suppressed with how tirelessly the robotic sentries of the police department toiled in safeguarding the streets of their district, but the true threat was the Inspector.
With one order, he could easily alleviate all the attention upon them, channeling the police teams away from their activities.
That was if he could be..persuaded to see their side of things, preferably with some credits changing hands. But what could you do to a man who couldn’t be bought?
The easiest way was to kill him, of course.
The gangs banded together in an uneasy alliance, united against this Inspector who was causing them so many problems. A hit squad was formed, sent to raid the Inspector’s home after they had confirmed that he was to be home on holiday, where he would be at his most vulnerable.
Ironically, that very same day was Eve’s fourteenth birthday.
It had been a day to celebrate, with Eve having just graduated from school at the top of the class, with her acceptance to whatever academy she could ever want to go to practically confirmed. In fact, several academies had already sent in notices to their home that they would be glad to accept such a prodigious talent.
The celebrative mood was quickly cut short as burning lead and laser fire ripped through the walls of their home. Matthias was struck twice in the vitals, sending him screaming to the floor before Eve upended the steel table, providing some cover for her family and sending her birthday cake into the face of the first assailant that broke down their door.
By all means, a young girl aged at a mere fourteen years old would’ve been cowering terrified in some corner..but Eve most definitely wasn’t most girls.
Panic and fear should’ve been assaulting her mind, but only a cold, irrational anger powered her actions as she systematically disarmed the thug standing before her with a quick Force-boosted jab to the Adam’s apple, crushing it within his windpipe.
Twisting his arm just like how they had taught in Basic CQC, she relieved the dying man of his firearm, summarily executing the criminal on the spot. Mercy was the last thing on her mind. Right now, the desire for both her and her family was the greatest.
She gazed around her, crimson-hued irises glaring coldly at the twenty-odd thugs surrounding her home. By now, her neighbours would’ve probably rung up District Security.
Five minutes before they arrived, probably. Would the thugs survive that long?
Eve raised the gun, a slight smile curving her lip. Probably not.
We’ll just say the events of that day left quite the lasting mental scar upon Eve. Her father had been shot in the face with a laser bolt..twisting his once handsome visage into a twisted mess. The other had been a bullet that had destroyed his right knee. Despite those grievous wounds, Matthias had picked himself off the floor and gone to assist his daughter in finishing off the rest of the thugs, taking on several more wounds before finally collapsing.
He had been rushed to the hospital and given immediate emergency treatment, but it was too late to save his leg. His position in District Security meant that he would receive a cybernetic replacement for his leg, but it would never be as nimble nor as agile as his previous human limb. And while it was easy enough to restore his facial features with cosmetic surgery, the same could not be said for the rest of his ruined body.
He would live the rest of his life, crippled.
Seeing her proud father reduced to this had changed something within Eve. Out of all the career paths that were laid out for her, she picked one and only one; Enforcement.
Enforcement Academy was a school that trained and prepared people before they embarked on the most dangerous of careers. Whether it be a bounty hunter, bodyguard, soldier..or even perhaps, District Security..
It could be said that it was a waste with someone with as much latent potential as Eve, but no amount of persuasion from her teachers and mother would sway her.
At sixteen years old, she again graduated at the top of her class. She immediately took on the mantle of a bounty hunter and within a year, turned in the heads of all the gang leaders responsible for the raid on her home. There were all sorts of rumors about her methods and just how far she had gone to track down the gang bosses..and more than often, District Security would get remnants of the gangs turning up from time to time to turn themselves in. Their reasons?
It was safer in the lock-up than outside..not with Graele’s kid stalking around.
Her revenge was complete, but at what cost? Before she’d knew it, the little girl had grown into a young woman. She’d spent the last three years of her life distant from her parents..just to seek revenge, because that had been all she was thinking of. A means to an end, to settle that fury that raged within her.
Upon coming home with her head finally clear and the weights lifted from her heart, she’d discovered the true meaning of her revenge.
An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind..
The sadness apparent within Sofia’s eyes as she greeted her at the doorstep told her all that she needed to know. Slowly but surely, her father’s life was slipping away.
She spent that night in a contemplative silence, too awake for sleep. She thought that revenge had been necessary..but she had also let herself be consumed in her desire for vengeance. So much that she was blind to the plight of her own family..
Dawn soon broke upon the District once again and a knock upon her door roused her from her thoughts.
Matthias Graele stood before her, impossibly as straight and tall as she remembered her father to be. But it wasn’t right..even from a distance away, she could sense the overboosted Vigor Sigil, pushing her father’s body past the brink to continue as he was doing so currently.
Eve begged for him to cancel the Sigil, but it was a done thing. Her father would not live past today, no matter what happened now.
They had many things to say to each other in the absence of three years..but a father’s duty came first. He had a little disciplining to do on his wayward daughter..
They sparred like they’d always had, although in the first place, against a Vigor Sigil of that degree? It had more or less been a hopeless fight from the start.
In short, she got the crap beaten out of her. Despite the pain she felt as she lay bruised and winded on the floor, she somehow felt...at peace.
Her regret for abandoning her family still lingered heavily within her, something that she might never be able to assuage for the remainder of her life.
With a heavy sigh, her father sat down on the floor beside her.
Remember that horrible little story I told you before?
It’s real, Evelynn. It’s very real.
All that we have done was to prepare you for it..and I’m so sorry for not telling you any earlier. I’m sorry that you’ve had to go through what you did these past three years..and I know why you did it. Don’t cry, baby girl. Daddy’s here for you now.
And..thank you for coming back. I..I’ve been waiting for you to come home for so long. I’m..tired, Eve. So very tired.
The father and daughter gazed out the window of their residence at Ainheim IV’s setting sun, both of their faces wet with tears. Their reunion after three years would last only a day..but for now, every second was precious.
They chatted, arguing happily as they did all they could to make up for three years, all in those final few hours. Matthias only got quieter, his previous liveliness slowly dying as the sun continued to set. It was almost as if it was a indicator of how much time he had left.
With a strong, unrelenting gaze, Matthias continued to watch the sun set, till it eventually left them in a pitch black darkness.
"Good night, Dad.”
Eve only stayed on Ainheim IV long enough to attend her father’s burial. Her mother had known of his last wishes and she wasn’t opposing her decision to carry them out..to seek out her aunts on Patria. The last she’d heard of them was that they had attended her parents’ wedding..not that it mattered much now.
Hugging her mother a final goodbye, she caught the shuttle to Patria, a quick journey from Ainheim IV itself.
The first thing she did when she landed? Contact her Aunt..whatshername..? Elly? Elena? Oh, right. Eleanor.
"Good day, Aunt Eleanor. I am Evelynn Graele, your niece. I’m on Patria right now..can we talk?”
New planet, new beginnings. New family she’d never met, too. Wonder what they were like? And oh, wasn’t it her eighteenth birthday today..? Right..
