I just felt compelled to create stuff so Im gonna make a race here. I might end up making a character later but who knows... (incoming wall of text warning)
Acernian-The Acernians are a diverse race of long lived plant-like humanoids with very few members. The average Acernian can live for thirteen to fifteen hundred years before they begin to wither away. The race saw its humble beginning on the planet Radix very shortly after the creation of the known universe. Due to their limited population size and extreme diversity they remained neutral in the war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
They started with but seven individuals, birthed from the seeds of a once great tree on Radix. The Acernian's life is split into several stages where their fertility, gender, and mobility remain in flux.
They start their life as a sapling, firmly held to the earth until they reach their 'adult' size. The size and shape at the end of their sapling period varies per individual, but most Acernians feature small pointed ears, feminine body structure, slightly mounded chests, skin colors ranging from pale to green, blue, and purple, and a wide variety of hair and eye colors. For the first one hundred or so years of their life Acernians remain very mobile and genderfluid, this is known as the migration period. During the migration period individuals may morph their gender and appearance to suit their partners or personal needs. Though sexually mature, during the migration period most Acernians are infertile. The Acernian's mind and body remain soft and malleable until the end of their migration period, when they chose or settle into their permanent biological sex and appearance. That being said, if an Acernian so wishes, they can live their entire life in the migration period, but this is generally frowned upon by the race as a whole.
Once they set their permanent appearance their skin starts developing a thin layer of bark, beginning at their utmost extremities and working inward toward their core. After the migration period male Acernians, also known as Roks, remain fertile for 100% of their remaining lives, unless they suffer an injury to their reproductive systems. Female Acernians, known as Yews, feature three one-month long blooming periods each year, in which they produce one egg for fertilization. During the blooming period Yews strip away some of their protective bark and release powerful pheromones to attract potential mates. The major complication however is that Roks and Yews are incapable of mating until they reach the rooted stage of their life. Both Roks and Yews can produce offspring with almost any species and gender in the galaxy, other than their own. This reproduction results in a near perfect genetic clone of the non-Acernian species. Gestation periods reflect that of the non-Acernian parent.
After migration but before rooting is simply a normal life for most sentient species; get a job, maybe start a family with an alien race, or some local fauna, travel the universe, have a hell of a time. Once the end of their lifetime approaches an Acernian's bark becomes too heavy for them to carry and they root themselves in the planet of their choosing. A single Acernian rooted to the earth will slowly become a tree or other indistinguishable plant species. Once they are rooted they can reproduce with members of their own race, but not being able to move means that at least two Acernians must root together in order to create a new member of the species. For every additional Acernian that mates and roots at the same time the number of offspring is doubled. (2 Acernians would produce 1 offspring whereas 10 Acernians would produce 256 offspring)
The Acernians have become popular diplomats, translators, brokers, and breeders. Many Acernians have also explored careers as dancers, artists, soldiers, scientists, and medical professionals. Their close ties to the nature have left them weary of space travel and usually rely on other races for transportation to and from their home planet.
Pro: Photosynthesis- Acernians only need water and sunlight to survive, usually consuming food to aid in recovery from injury or as a ceremonial practice. They also produce enough oxygen for themselves and up to four other human sized creatures per day, so long as there is adequate catalysts available.
Con: Technologically Inept- Acernians struggle with to comprehend, or otherwise just lack patience for, most kinds of technology. -2 to all technologically related skill rolls
