Nathan comes from a military background, the second youngest in a family of seven children. Both his mother and father were soldiers, the former being in the regular military and the latter being part of Ravenwatch. While it was stressed that he could be anything he wanted while he was growing up, it was always apparent that both parents wanted all of their children to follow in their footsteps. When the first three did that, it was difficult for the rest to not do so, as the household was always fairly competitive when it came to…well, anything. Everyone had to one-up everyone else.
Unfortunately for Nathan, even though he was both fairly in shape and able to act quickly, he was never as good as his older siblings. They were all stronger than he was, and although he was more graceful than any of them it didn’t help much in physical contests. This caused him to have a severe lack of self-confidence, and so he didn’t see any possible way that he would ever make it in any kind of military organization. Although he was actually a better shot with any rifle than any of his siblings, the fact that this came late enough for him to already not have confidence caused him to end up doing worse most of the time.
Of course, the self-confidence issue didn’t just come from his siblings. It was something that he had just been born with, and the competitive situation in his family just served to aggravate it. When everyone above him save for a single older sister, who decided to become a doctor, decided to join some branch of military service, he felt like it was his obligation to do so as well. He was at least able to tell that he could use rifles and similar weapons better than the average person, having been around them for nearly his whole life.
Apart from that, Nathan’s life was boringly average. Nothing he did in school stood out particularly, and although he was nowhere near the bottom of the class he never seemed to put the most effort that he could have into his work. His self-confidence issues made him more introverted than most, so most of his school time was spent without many friends. Instead, he spent a lot of time practicing with firearms, at least as soon as his parents let him. The strange bit was that when he was alone there was no issue in his performance, but as soon as someone else came along he would get all nervous and forget how well he had been doing. That was the same for pretty much everything he did, actually.
Strangely, everything that he ever did right in his life Nathan attributed to luck, not willing to believe that it was his own skill that carried through for anything. In fact, that is how he got his codename. After multiple insistences that it was because he was lucky that he did something well, someone started calling him that as a nickname and it just seemed to stick.
How he actually managed to make it into Ravenwatch, he has no idea. The truth is that, when he can actually focus on what he’s doing, Nathan is an incredibly good shot with any kind of long-range weapon. Sticking him in a position where he’s actually close to the enemy is a recipe for failure, as CQC is something he could never win against his siblings and so is something he thinks he is not good at. In general terms, apart from CQC, he’s actually good at most things he’s assigned to…when he can muster enough confidence to think that he actually is. Overall, he’s about as effective as your average soldier, just not in a consistent manner. Catch him on a good day, and he’s the type of person you want watching your back. Catch him on a bad day…well, the situation might take a bad turn.
