Yeah... It's taking a bit because I'm also talking to a friend who's having some issues, doing classwork and generally being ADD right now... It'll be up before the day ends though.

I'm not self centered!
I'm a douchebag... wait that's the same thing XD

Either way, I admit it, and at least I'm not an asshole douchebag... just an annoying one ^^

I do my best to be anything but a douchebag, though sometimes, it seems like people see me as one regardless. Truth be told, a self-serving mindset is a part of human nature, though so is the ability to think logically, and be willing to help others, as well.

...but let's not get into a big philosophical/psychological discussion here. This is an OOC thread for a Neo-Victorian fantasy RP, not "Aristotle-Con 2012." :P

Good idea.

More on-topic, I figured I'd ask this question before we get into any real combat, as it's recently been pegging at the back of my mind:

What sort of limit is put on our characters' ability to wield magic? Y'know, something that keeps it within reason, so we don't have fire mages burning down cities, ground/stone mages literally burying whole settlements, and lightning mages nuking everything around them, all at level 1.

For example, take the Electric mages. On what sort of scale can we expect to earn abilities such as, say, an electrical pulse that zaps everything in a certain radius? Or perhaps a multi-target lightning arc spell? Remember, I'm thinking of balance here.

I built Ramul's stats with the idea of versatility, while building his equipment for good use of agility (hence the shortage of armor on him, to maximize speed and such).

As for his personality, my idea is to have him normally be laid-back, but when his anger is provoked, he becomes far more aggressive. For those of you who played Metroid Prime 3, think of a Ghor-type personality, except he doesn't need to fuse with a giant robot for that aggression-streak. :P

If ya want to know what my character is like, think black hat from the movie 'Priest' when he waves his hands around as if he was conducting an orchestra. Garian tends to do that but he is literally conducting a symphony using his flames to destroy what he wants. Which is how he became Merc Leader.

For example, take the Electric mages. On what sort of scale can we expect to earn abilities such as, say, an electrical pulse that zaps everything in a certain radius? Or perhaps a multi-target lightning arc spell? Remember, I'm thinking of balance here.

I have actually thought of that, and came up with two plans, which I will likely pick from (or be influenced to pick from) before any real combat starts.

Option 1: That Little Vault Inside Our Heads.
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Hello!

I heard you were a magic user! That's great! I'm sure you've figured out one or two ways that you can use it already! That's good, because those two are the only ones you'll have!

But wait, there's more! Through continued use of magic, depending on the target and method of use, you slowly unravel new ways of doing so! Killing someone with your magic gives that spool of magic twine a nice yank, and if you get a little tutoring, you'll find you have a nice ball of magic twine in front of you! And don't worry, you'll know when a new way to use your magic has dawned on you- It clouds your vision for the smallest instant!

Summary:
  • Depending on the amount of prior training, a character gets a few methods of magic (aka spells, if you're a dirty commoner.) Methods of magic are esentially what you can do with it, IE covering your hand in fire, or shooting a thunderbolt from your sword.
  • Using the spells in general will make a "Magic Spool" unravel.
  • Magic Spools are the progress to discovering a new method of magic. A completely unravelled spool means you've earned a new method.
  • Magic Spools get unravelled slowly through general use, but killing someone or being taught about the school of magic (this includes via books) will unravel the spool faster.
  • The method of magic unlocked will always be something that benefits the character's tactics in combat.

Option 2: I Think It's Time We Experimented A Little.
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Yeah, you heard me, hotness. Me. You. Having a little fun with magic.

This option essentially means the discovery of ways to use magic are reliant on the character entirely, we're leaving the big bad GM out as much as we can.

Let's say you have a nice idea for a spell... Say, a flaming high-five. Your character tries to focus his magic in his hand- This is a fairly simple task, so he's pleased when his hand catches flame, but doesn't feel the heat or pain from being actually covered in fire! Of course, this process is never pefect the first time, you could fail until you actually succeed! Imagine that!

Of course, more ambitious projects will always be more risky to do. Covering your entire body in fire for some sort of bear hug that causes third degree burns, for instance, will always be risky- take it a step at a time!

Summary:
  • Magic discovery is all on the character.
  • If he fails to figure out how to use it the way he thought of it, he has to keep trying.
  • However, getting a 'perfect' attempt allows the free use of it.
  • Failure can range from many things, sometimes it can be very severe, depending on how ambitious a project is.

There. Back to writing an update for me.

I'll let you continue writing those updates, but I do want to say that the second option sounds better to me. We can all start out with just the basics (such as, say, sheathing a fist in flames, or firing a small burst of electricity), and our list of magic abilities grows, depending on how we experiment with our respective attribute.

Like you said, it gives a lot of freedom to the player, as we can essentially craft our own spells, and need to practice them in order to gain full use (which also adds some realism and a bit more depth, imo).

what if our chars have already been practicing magic for a few years though

like kaleah is no newbie to fire magic she can use it proficiently. wouldnt make sense if she just suddenly decided to only use tiny spells in battle (since most of her spells involve blowing up/setting aflame some part of the area around her)

My character has only used magic to make her life in the wild (and the back of a store) a little easier. She hasn't done anything offensive... unless you count making traps for large animals chasing her, but they (so far) have never killed anything.

So she has had a lot of arcane plant magic.

Naturally, she would have more ways to use magic down in her head. Don't worry, I won't stop you from any of that, especially since it was used in the intro! But getting more spells is what I was talking about.

And yeah, I'm using the second one. Freedom is good, except (especially?) when you immolate yourself in the process.
