Yo folks, Nicoffee (Previously Nescafe) over here. Here to bring y'all my newest RP, which I mentioned earlier in a few other places. I will be hosting Singularity and ONLY Singularity for at least a good while (Unless it totally fails, that is). I was in the mood for a Sci-Fi RP, so I came up with this. It's inspired by Tyranny, Shadowrun and a Tabletop RPG by the name of Eclipse Phase.
Premise:
In Singularity, evil has won. The galaxy is dominated by Bayrios, a mysterious and all-powerful overlord who has subjugated the galaxy, their conquest having started roughly four hundred years ago, pretty much the entirety of the known galaxy is now under their control, save for a few outer rim worlds who still feebly attempt to resist the Overlord's occupation.
The Skylat system is your home and it belongs to the Overlord. Skylat is filled with technology and magic, both in its planets, its people, its fauna and its flora. Magic exists and can be manipulated by virtually anyone, even those who are not interested in the art per say are familiar with its basic workings, how to light a candle with a touch, heat up the water of a bath when the electric shower isn't working, flip a light switch from a short distance away, the concept of toying with the arcane is as usual as learning to ride a bicycle.
Of course, those who study magic with dedication and perseverance are known to be able to wield with devastating effects. Likewise, the power of technology is nothing to be underestimated, not only is faster than light travel a generally affordable commodity for anyone, today's technology is able to terraform entire worlds in a matter of days, transcend and re-define humanity, one step at a time.
Bayrios, The Overlord:
Bayrios is the Overlord of the Skylat system, nobody knows what they look like or, for that matter, if The Overlord is male, female or whatever else. The Overlord operates through their "Council", men and women of awesome power and varying importance who have sworn their undying loyalty to the Overlord.
The Overlord resides at "Dux", the capital planet of Skylat, within the Imperial City, at the very top of the Ebony Palace, a massive, impenetrable structure which few enter and even fewer ever leave. From that overlook, the Overlord oversees the domination of the Skylat system and the destruction of any remaining factions that may oppose them.
While Bayrios seems content to leave their Council to finish off the rest of the conquest, they occasionally take matters into their own hands, sort of, to remind people of who Bayrios is, and why they should be feared. The Overlord's most powerful weapon of mass destruction is not a nuke, or an orbital laser, or a gun.
The Overlord's most powerful weapons is ink on paper, an Edict. An edict is a special kind of missive which they need to physically send to a specific location or planet and then have the scroll be read, doesn't matter if out loud or quietly, once someone reads what the Overlord has written on a scroll, it is no longer just an order or a law, it is reality.
At one point during the early days of the Conquest, the planet of Karnaca, a bustling, advanced civilization, well advanced beyond most of their peers, militarily ready to hold out against the Overlord's entire army at the time, if not even fight them back in their conquest, they received an Edict from the Overlord that said:
"If the leaders of Karnaca have not surrendered to Bayrios's forces by the end of the planetary month, the entire planet shall be struck down by the Overlord's godly thunder."
They laughed and mocked the warning, until the very end. At the end of the month, what followed would be known to all as the "Edict of Thunder", the first great proof of the Overlord's power. As the end of the month approached in Karnaca, the atmosphere grew dark and heavy, the entire planet was covered in a pitch black smoke and as the clock hit midnight on the last day of the month, a single massive bolt of lightning came down from the sky and struck the earth of Karnaca, this single bolt of electricity traveled all the way down to the planet's core and kickstarted a fusion reaction in the planet's core, causing to shatter itself apart in rock, magma, metal and guts, as the entire civilization of the planet and the planet itself were wiped out in an instant.
The second edict was the "Edict of Decay" a few years later, sent to the once life rich planet of Bullabhan, which was home to the galaxy's largest forests, biggest trees, most colourful life and most magically attuned people, who so happened to be resisting the Overlord's rule.
"For as long as the sons of Bullabhan resist the will of Bayrios, the land of the planet shall be blighted, no plant life shall grow or prosper in the blighted soil of the planet."
And so it was decreed, and so it happened. Ever since that Edict, Bullabhan went from a jungle planet, to a desert planet, dry, rocky and dead.
Needless to say, once the Overlord's power had been confirmed among the people of the galaxy, the rest of the conquest went by much more smoothly, the few incidents where there were rebellions or resistance were quickly silenced, either by the Overlord's forces, or by an Edict.
The Council:
Each planet in the Overlord's domain is controlled by a Council member, but not all Council Members control a planet, some work to oversee specific matters which take up precedence over planetary governance.
Riviera "Jupiter" Parrica, by example, is the Councilwoman of Justice, she is responsible for overseeing, regulating and applying the law all over Bayrios's domain. She is a stoic, cold and imposing woman, whose mind is said to be able to pierce through any lies, her gavel able to smite any lawbreaker, her judgment absolute and unquestionable.
Nur "Mercury" Nyoman is the Councilman of Commerce and Trade, he is responsible for overseeing all businesses and their permissions all over the Empire. In the Empire, merchants are given "Permits" on what they are allowed to sell every year, and these permits are shifted around depending on the needs of the empire and what other permits the merchant has operated with thus far, this keeps any of them from acquiring a monopoly on a certain market and keeps all trade under the tight control of the Overlord. The currency in the Empire is the ¤ (Credit), by the way.
Yera "Mars" Banwich is the Councilwoman of War, she is supposedly the Overlord's military mastermind and most trusted general, responsible for overseeing the conquest and keeping Bayrios informed of all the comings and goings of their expanding empire.
There are many other Council members, but they will be introduced as necessary.
Transcending humanity:
All characters in Skylat are human by birth, but that doesn't mean they can't customize their body into whatever they please. As years went by, genetic splicing and body manipulation became quite normal among the general populace. The level and extent of the changes varied greatly as time went on, sometimes even turning a parent's modifications into actual permanent changes that their children then inherited. Because of this, Skylat is filled with numerous different human "sub-types", with things that range from people who gave themselves "extra appendages" all the way to those who mixed their DNA with that of animals or beasts. Despite all of these different subtypes, splices are generally strictly cosmetic. Because no matter how many beast-splices may claim that they can hear, smell or see better than the average human, no one has been able to scientifically prove such facts as a reality.
Basics:
Might – your character’s physical strength and intimidating presence.
Finesse – your character’s physical precision and subtlety.
Quickness – your character’s speed and reaction times.
Vitality – physical health and force of personality.
Wits – intelligence and arcane potential.
Resolve – ability to endure physical, mental and social challenges.
When a character is attempting to perform an action, I roll a d100, then add the character's attribute related to that particular task, as well as any tools he might have which help him with his task, then subtract a value according to the difficulty of the task, if the character rolls 51 or above, it's a success, if they roll below, it's a fail.
Let's take as an example Brutus, Brutus is a generic character with 20 Might, which is moderately high, attempting to force a metal door open in the middle of heavy rain, his roll would be a d100 + 20 - 10. They would therefore need to roll 41 or higher, giving them a 59% of success. Making it an averagely difficult task.
Brutus fails to kick the door open on his first try, he decides to try and be a little bit smarter about this and, now equipped with a sledgehammer to help him bust the door open, waits for the rain to pass before trying again. Breaking open a door is considerably easier with a tool and it also is no longer raining, turning the -10 penalty into a +10 bonus. Meaning the roll is now d100 + 20 + 10, which means he only needs to get higher than 21 to bust the door open, in other words, a 79% chance of success, a considerably easier task.
The difficulty ratings go as follows:
-100 Impossible (Auto-fail) - Difficulty Level 5 or more
-50 Very difficult - Difficulty Level 4
-25 Difficult - Difficulty Level 3
-10 Somewhat difficult - Difficulty Level 2
-5 Tricky - Difficulty Level 1
0 Average - Difficulty Level 0
+5 Straightforward - Ease Level 1
+10 Simple - Ease Level 2
+25 Easy - Ease Level 3
+50 Very Easy - Ease Level 4
+100 Trivial (You just automatically succeed) - Ease Level 5 or more
Difficulty will go up or down according to the number of elements that are helping or hindering you perform your task, and some elements may award multiple levels to increase or decrease difficulty. In the example above, the fact that the door was of a hard material and that it was raining, put the task at a difficulty level of 2, giving Brutus a -10 Penalty to the task.
Waiting for the rain to fade off reduced the Difficulty Level from 2 to 1, and then using a sledgehammer further improved his chances by +3 landing him an Ease 2 Bonus.
When two characters are facing each other off, a similar process occurs, except then the characters make opposed rolls against each other instead of against a static 51. Difficulty bonuses or penalties still will apply, depending on the environment in which the characters are facing off, their current condition and status, and if they're fighting, high ground, distance relative to weapon type, etc.
KEEP IN MIND THAT BULLETS AND LASERS ARE STILL A ROLL AGAINST A 51, NOT A CONTESTED ROLL. YOU CAN'T DODGE SOMETHING THAT FAST AFTER IT WAS FIRED, THE BEST IDEA IS TO JUST MAKE YOURSELF A MORE DIFFICULT TARGET VIA COVER, SMOKE, ETC.
When multiple characters are attempting to perform the same task (such as two characters trying to push a rock out of their way) or when one character is aiding another in the resolution of a task, both of their attribute scores are added together in a single roll for both of them.
Character Advancement:
There are no levels in this game. Instead, characters improve themselves by upgrading their equipment and by performing meaningful actions relevant to the attributes they want to raise. Everytime a character succeeds in a roll of Difficulty Level +2 or lower, the attribute they used to make that roll increases by one point.
Health Mechanics:
Characters in Singularity don't have HP, instead, when they get hurt, they acquire Grazes and Wounds. Grazes heal immediately once a battle is over, wounds, however, require a fair amount of time or medical treatment to get rid of.
Every wound a character has adds a -5 bonus to all rolls they attempt to make, due to the pain keeping them from acting at their full capability. Grazes give no penalties, but every three Grazes turn into a wound. A character may have as many as 5 wounds at maximum, plus one additional wound for every 5 points of Vitality they possess.
If a character acquires one more wound than their Vitality Score allows them to, they must succeed in a "Resolve" check or be knocked unconscious, if the character succeeds in the Resolve check, they still acquire the wound as normal, but keep themselves from getting knocked out.
Deflection Mechanics:
Armor makes you easier to hit, but, in exchange, makes it so that the hits you do take aren't as lethal as they could be. Every "Deflection" point turns a weapon's Wound Point into a Graze Point.
Soak Mechanics:
The heaviest armors, also have a Soak mechanic, which means they can just nullify an amount of Graze damage equal to the amount of Soak points they have. This comes into affect after Deflection.
Magic in Singularity works based on Sigils, sigils are quick patterns of movements one can perform with their fingers in order to summon magical effects, which are then focused and re-purposed by the use of extra symbols around and following the original symbol.
There are 10 "Base" Sigils:
- Fire
- Vigor
- Illusion
- Frost
- Lightning
- Life
- Force
- Emotion
- Atrophy
- Stone
These are taught in most schools around the world and anyone can use them to cast spells at a basic degree, depending on their affinity and capabilities with magic.
Trivial uses of magic include: Using a fire sigil to light up a candle, using a stone sigil to leave a message in the rock, using a force sigil to flip a light switch, using a vigor sigil to give your coffee that extra "oomph" in the morning.
Average uses of magic include: Using a Lightning Sigil to recharge a laser weapon's battery, using a life sigil to heal someone's wounds, using a force sigil to knock someone off their feet.
Difficult uses of magic include: Using a fire sigil to throw a fireball at someone, using an Emotion Sigil to take control over someone else or using a Stone Sigil to turn someone's flesh to stone for some time.
As previously mentioned, anyone in the Skylat system can learn about magic, though the dangerous and forbidden arts are secrets kept only for Bayrios, their trusted Council Members and their forces. There are supposedly dozens of other sigils, kept secret from the general populace due to their hidden potential. It is often speculated that Bayrios's Edicts are actually not truly letters, but rather a succession of powerful secret sigils which are known only to the Overlord, of course, that is mostly wild speculation.
When used offensively people, Sigils always roll against the target's resolve, regardless of the type of attack being made. Be it a ball of flame or an illusion made to trick the mind, if the target is another person, it's a contest against their resolve.
Weapons Types:
Weapons below have the following information:
How much and what type of damage they do.
Their range. (You get disadvantages when using weapons outside of their ideal range)
Their special effects or restrictions, if any.
Most ranged weapons can be either firearms or laser weapons. Lead-based firearms can only fired so many times before having to be reloaded, which requires a full turn. Laser weapons, on the other hand, have much larger clips by working with batteries which, once depleted, make the weapon pretty much useless until it can be recharged at a viable power source.
Not only that, some weapons have multiple different firing modes, such as burst fire or full auto. Keep in mind that these modes come with accuracy penalties, however, and each bullet is calculated separately for the purpose of armor calculations.
Armor Types:
Everyone's adventure will begin in Patria.
Patria is a small (half the size of Earth) earth-like planet with one moon by the name of Amada.
http://i.imgur.com/YReVlsX.jpg
Patria's geography has a few important characteristics:
- No continents, Patria is mostly covered by earth, instead of water. Amidst its large landmass, it has massive lakes and rivers of varying depths.
- Uniform fauna and flora. Possibly due to its "single continent" geography, Patria's vegetation and animals are generally the same along the entirety of the planet.
- Eros-stimulative atmosphere. (You saw this coming.) The atmosphere of Patria is not toxic to humans, in fact, it is quite comfortably breathable and very healthy...Except...Well, the planet has a bit of an aphrodisiac effect in its atmosphere, which causes its inhabitants and visitors to be rather "affectionate" at all times during the day. Though reports vary, some people claim that the effects of Patria's atmosphere can remain within one's body even long after they left the planet, causing general increases in sexual appetite.
Aside from that, Patria is also a planet that has been resisting the Overlord's conquest. For quite a while now, in fact. Usually planets attacked by the Overlord tend to last no longer than one or two weeks, not only are the Overlord's forces quite often more than enough to overpower any resistance, the mere threat of an edict is usually enough to push any opposition into submission. Sadly, on Patria's case, it's been well over a month since Bayrios's forces landed on the planet's surface and any progress in the conquest has yet to be seen, the local resistance, by the name of the "Homeland" has yet to give any ground to the invaders and has defended their home with amazing bravado. The Council member in charge of the domination of Patria, Sybille "Venus" Arrobestra, has attributed this delay to the planet's aphrodisiacal atmosphere, which has kept her troops too "occupied" to work at full force.
Needless to be said, the Overlord is rather displeased with this turn of events and has sent a single civilian ship to Patria as "reinforcements" with what everyone can only assume is an Edict, alongside with a single small squad of troops.
Characters may belong to any of the parties involved in this affair, they may be part of the forces of Councilwoman Venus, which includes, soldiers, quartermasters, medics, suppliers, historians, tacticians...They may be part of the squad aboard the civilian ship headed for Patria! Maybe even part of the ship's usual crew, the pilot, engineer, what have you. You can be a local from the planet, who has remained neutral in the war so far. And if you want, even, you can also be part of the "Homeland" resistance force, if you have a death wish.
