Spoiler (click to show/hide):
August 19th, 2013:
One might remember Siribalt as being such a nice city. The epitome of human development. The flourishing downtown, populated with its silvery metal buildings for the famous and infamous companies there, its moneyed banks, the ancient stock exchange and the pedestrians flooding the streets. And the grand hospitals, too, make the concrete and metal jungle seem like a monolith in a nearly endless expanse of plains. The delectable parks. The quaint harbor leading out into the ocean.
And of course the endless road that seemed to stretch far off into the horizon, over the plains. Your ticket out of here, if you wanted to leave. If you could leave.
But Siribalt's dead now. Ever since March of earlier that year, the sun abandoned it. Thick, foreboding clouds now coat the sky, shrouding it in perpetual darkness 24 hours a day with a blood red seeming to tinge the atmosphere at times. Crashed cars litter the streets and store windows are smashed, stripped of their goods. Pamphlets and posters advertising "the cure" and "safety" plaster walls, billboards and the floors and there's nothing but the wind and the crows to accompany the rotting and fresh bodies and blood one can find anywhere. Really, it's only the gigantic, seeming invincible and needly silver skyscraper upon which is proudly emblazoned "SIRIN INTERNATIONAL" that stands defiantly against the carnage in the center of the city, illuminated by its spotlights that seems to have weathered the storm. You might see it from the gunfire lighting up its high walls, tearing up the mutated attackers that assault its gates on a daily basis.
Oh, right. Them. Mutated freaks is an apt description, if you're not already in their ranks. Gurgling and gargling, their faces and bodies twisted and malformed with rotten black muscle and luminous red appendages as they shamble towards you, hungering for your flesh. Not to mention the indescribable, hulking creatures you've seen tear apart the police vehicles that tried to stand up to them. And then there's the smart ones. Ones you might mistake for human were it not for their massive claws, or arms, or teeth, peering down at you as they jumped from roof to roof, tearing a man in half. But how do you escape it? Siribalt's massive walls, once constructed to defend the city from attack in ancient times, now stand as your prison, staffed by reportedly invincible gun turrets and barricaded gates that nobody has escaped from. The harbor, one might suggest. Well, last time I saw a boat there, it got eaten by a freakish shark. Two bites... everyone was gone. Another victim of the SI Virus. The same microscopic beast that's been turning Siribalt's former population of 200,000 into food.
But whatever. I don't care how you got here, or who you are, but if you're still listening to what I have to say... this was our fault.
Summary -
Of course you've seen it before, but I'm making it anyway. In a nutshell: in March of 2013, the SI Virus found its way into Siribalt, a developing city in the middle of a large plains on the coast of an unnamed country gripped by war. As fate would have it, the very same sentry guns lining the city's great walls (ironically once slated for demolition) now turn on its citizens to contain the mutated freaks that the virus produces. Infected water or food, a solid bite, a deep scratch from the shambling infected... say goodbye to your humanity. Sirin International, a leading medical sciences corporation, is suspected to be at the center of it all, but their massive private army contracted to the previously lesser known mercenary company Triple Sword Security (TSS) keeps the zombies well away from their proud headquarters near the city center as the remainder rots. At this time, you may play as either an unfortunate survivor caught up in the mix, A Triple Sword soldier, or perhaps one of the lucky few infected who retained their sanity, and acquired great physical power.
Siribalt -
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
Siribalt was supposed to be the next New York. The next London. The next Toronto.
As stated, Siribalt is located in an unnamed country in an unnamed part of Earth, well along the usually sunny and warm Eastern Coast bordering the ocean. Completely surrounding Siribalt are a massive expanse of grassy plains, forming a non existent barrier between Siribalt and the nearest village 600 kilometres away. In terms of layout, Siribalt is just about what you'd expect from a growing city fueled by both tourism to its sunny beaches and its rising industry. Towards the city center one can find the town hall and numerous large buildings which were sacked or otherwise damaged during the chaos. Siribalt's well kept parks, varying in size (and furnished with benches, cobblestone walkways, ponds and ginormous trees) provide stretches of green among the largely concrete jungle of the inner city but became popular spots for peaceful suicide after the virus broke out and are now bloody messes. The city's innumerable stores and shops range from everything from department stores, to grocery stores, to comic book shops, to clothing outlets to restaurants to nearly anything you can imagine. Seeking supplies, most of them have been pillaged, ransacked or razed for their contents, but some survive.
The suburbs and apartments towards the edge of the city, likewise, have been damaged and destroyed. Cars and debris litter the streets everywhere you look.
In addition, Siribalt contains a small harbor on its eastern edge where freight ships once came and went, but the last freighter left weeks before the virus broke out and no incoming ships have been seen since save for Triple Sword supply boats, which are heavily protected. The large freight crane here remains inactive and numerous containers full of commercial goods line the tarmac, but no working ships can be found. Next the harbor is the marina, where small private boats might be found, but those who used their boats to escape are long gone into the ocean. Beyond that, every boat has been scuttled or damaged by the infected or vandalism. There is also a small airport towards the south of the city, standing as a few hangars, a terminal, a control tower and two runways. It is swamped with infected after the weak defenses protecting it fell. Nobody really knows whats inside its tall chain link fences. A few prop and jet engine aircraft (from corporate jets to small Cessnas) are visible, but it's unknown if they even work or not.
There is Siribalt's beach too. Once the spot of tourism, it had a famous boardwalk that's now littered with bodies. All the street food vendors are long dead, leaving their carts behind on the boardwalk. And the beach itself is barren, the sand feeling cool and the gray waves lapping against the shore. Deceptively calm, for the horrors that lurk there.
And lastly, the Great Wall of Siribalt. Massive, colossal walls that ring the city 360 degrees and seem impervious to all attack, even in this day and age. The two gigantic gates leading out of Siribalt (one to the south, one to the north) were once very picturesque, but they were shut tightly closed in the early days of the virus, trapping those inside. Colossal, robot-guided sentry guns built to protect Siribalt from an invasion line the tops of the walls, shooting at all those they can spot with unerring accuracy. The gunfire of their powerful triple cannons (guided by thermal vision and moving around on a turret) often light up the night and day, and can blow a man to pieces in one shot. Thankfully, the guns don't seem to target anything except but what tries to cross the walls which is how Triple Sword helicopters can fly around.
As I also said, the sky seems completely covered with nearly black clouds day and night, blocking out the sun save for a few spots of light here and there, and sinking it into a perpetual overcast.
SI Virus -
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
Its actual designation is unknown, but it was nicknamed that by the citizens of Siribalt after Sirin International, who has been known to take bioweapons contracts with the country's government. The name was never popularized by the media, but they shut down pretty quickly as their headquarters got blown up.
Where it came from, nobody knows for sure. It wasn't until it began to spread, and fast, that people took note.
SI manifests itself rapidly. After infection one will become pale and weak, vomiting and experiencing hallucinations before their body will change. Their thoughts deterioriate and they begin to hemorrhage, until eventually they begin to mutate after roughly 24 hours. Mutated limbs will explode to huge sizes, the eyes turn red, extra appendages are grown... the results can be anything and infected have been shown to have some incredible powers. Most infected express a near immunity to pain and can take immense amounts of punishment before falling (but fire works well), but some special infected express immense speed, or agility, or strength or senses. And as one loses their sanity and life, they become mere monsters, desiring for fresh flesh to sate themselves.
Some lucky few retain their sanity, though, able to keep coherent thought except for the desire to kill and consume flesh. They can control their mutation, choosing to look like a normal human (except for the blood red eyes) and speak clearly or allow their unique physical mutations to flourish. These infected may sprout metallic claws from their hands, or transform an arm into a giant blade or tentacle, or spray corrosive acid from their bodies. In addition, they are usually somewhat stronger and faster than normal humans, and some possess regeneration powers, but the limit of their abilities varies.
There's no known cure to the SIV (infected of which are usually just called zombies or zeds or freaks), but Triple Sword and citizens have used fire to great effect against them.
Common antibiotics can also stifle SIV at its early stages after infection, but they must be applied in large amounts and very quickly.
Sirin International -
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
Commercialist bastards.
Naw, they've made some useful stuff. Sirin International is a company native to Siribalt founded in 1955 by Davis Selwick, a famous microbiologist, and has since flourished as a major leader in pharmaceutical and medical development around the world having eliminated diseases such as Ebola, Marburg, many strains of Influenza and countless other diseases with their over the counter cures as well as their services to governments developing bioweapons, countering enemy bioweapons and preparing the nation against bioattack, scoring Selwick's family billions of dollars and allowing them to expand rapidly. A classic success story. As one might imagine, though Sirin is quite popular for their miracle cures their employees' involvement in some more unsavory business practices (tax evasion, insider trading, etc.) has often made them the butt of controversy and some people have made fortunes criticizing them.
Sirin International's central headquarters is the aforementioned giant skyscraper (indeed, tallest in the city) towards the center of the city named Selwick Tower, close to the town hall. Like a giant silver spire, it houses everything from Sirin's Research and Development to their general corporate offices, and was staffed by hundreds. Even today, it still remains standing as it has been completely enclosed by a Triple Sword base that keeps it unharmed against repeated infected assaults with its high walls, towers, sentry guns and soldiers. Selwick (who is over 100), his son and his granddaughter alongside numerous employees are known to be in there at the very top, but nobody can get close as TS keeps it locked up tight, fed by numerous supply shipments from the harbor.
Triple Sword Security -
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
You probably didn't hear of them until they blazed a path into Siribalt. Contracted by Sirin International, Triple Sword is a highly equipped private military company staffed mostly by former soldiers and cops providing top notch private army services to anyone with the dosh. They are best identified by their black uniforms and their emblem of a three crossed blades (no kidding, right?) and their high tech equipment, which is mostly military grade hardware purchased for them by Sirin. They possess tanks, helicopters, humvees, APCs, sentry turrets, boats, chunky machine guns, flamethrowers, grenades, knives, hazmat gear... everything one would need to fight a war.
Triple Sword arrived roughly a week after the virus turned the entire city south by way of boat, flooding into the city center and setting up base at Selwick Tower where they are regularly reinforced by far smaller shipments of resources, vehicles and troops, operating like any military. It seems they have no interest in cleaning the city, but numerous special forces groups often are seen prowling about, looking for... something. Capturing infected and eliminating dangerous beasts is their usual agenda. They are known to attack anything deemed hostile, but generally won't attack any unarmed civilian, instead waving them away. They have strict orders against handing out supplies, however.
While Selwick Tower is their main bases and where their Siribalt ops commander and co-founder Rachel Silk resides in cahoots with Selwick (probably... they do have a really nice lounge in Selwick Tower with a fully stocked bar) smaller outposts and smaller bases have been established all around the city for various purposes.
They are also paid very well.
Clearday Initiative -
Spoiler (click to show/hide):
The Clearday Initiative has been gleamed from Triple Sword documents and radio communications for a while now by organized survivors. Not much is known about it, but various biological agents come up numerous times, along with several species of infected. Information is too hazy right now to make any judgments, but it's probably related to Selwick and TS's lingering presence in Siribalt.
(more about Clearday will be added here as more info is discovered by the PCs)
Well, anyway, this thread is a total work in progress and it prob won't be done for a bit, but I'll throw it up here anyway along with a character sheet.
