The Dreaming Dead [WIP]

Postby Nobudi » Tue Jul 28, 2015 4:09 am

So, I was planning to work on that Re:Monster rp or an XCOM rp I had cooking up, but I decided to put them on the back burner to bring this rp and dust off the cobwebs. I also wanted to check for any interest in this.
If anyone is curious, this was made when Bloodborne was still only known as Project Beast.

Basically a plot bunny that took a while for me to refine to this level, but still very much a work in progress.

It's quite cold right now, as well as dark. You gently float in space, and everything aside from the biting cold is numb. It takes some time, but finally, you can orient yourself, lying on your back. You eyes open for what seems like the first time in forever, and the bright lights sting. Once the lights stop being so harsh to your retinas, you can finally note some of where you are.
You appear to be in some sort of clinic office, or rather, in the bed of a clinic office. Your musings are cut short when the door opens, revealing a rather old man. Without preamble, he dropped a manila folder on your chest as he took a seat.
"You may be wondering where you are," he said as he looked you square in the eyes, judging your every move and reaction, "and I am here to tell you this: You're dead. Or rather, you were, only a few hours ago."
Taking a thermos off the only desk in the room, he quaffed its contents before continuing.
"But, you were brought back. Who, how or why, we don't know."
We?
"If you want to leave, feel free to do so at this point, but you'd do well to heed my words of advice, at the very least."
He leaned forward and in a soft, solemn tone, he said, "You've been given a second chance. But you cannot go back to what once was. Should you want to continue your new chance, beware The Dreaming."

The Dreaming
What exactly the dreaming is, is unknown. All that people will ever know is that it is akin to an alternative Dimension where impossibilities beyond human understandings exists, and the only entrance is through dreams. The Undead are immediately drawn into the dreaming upon falling asleep. Due to the nature of the Dreaming, it is in the Undead's best interest to escape back into the Woken World, as the Human world is known as. Exits are usually reflective surfaces, such as puddles of water or mirrors within the Dreaming. Aside from that, there are several components to the Dreaming that are dangers to the Undead themselves.

Land
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Within the Dreaming, it is less of a dimension and more of a world with an infinite number of ecosystems. Each singular ecosystem is known as a Land, which is less an actual ecosystem and more of an enclosed space in which power struggles often occur. The enclosure of the Land can take many forms, from walled gardens to city buildings. Mose Lands follow the rules of logic, but some are chaotic, where rules and regulations are without rhyme or reason. The Land plays host to two to three species of entities within itself. It is unknown, but there is speculation that each Land is actually sentient in a manner, which allows it to bestow power to the Master of the Land. The Land shares a symbiotic relation with the Master, for one will not exist without the other. Upon a Master's death, the Land will seek out a new Master to give its power, else the Land falls into oblivion, and nothing survives.

The Master of the Land
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

The Master of the Land is a specially chosen Denizen of the Land which is powered by the Land itself. The complete function of The Master is unknown, but they are typically considered the security and ruler within the boundaries of the Land. One known function of The Master is the eradication of abnormalities within the Land or Invaders such as Demons. As an Undead, you are naturally a type of the Former, and so The Master is well in its own boundaries to destroy you. However, they're often intelligent and can be quite nice, some only giving you stern warnings while others release you in exchange for some sort of service. Though, some can be as bloodthirsty as Demons themselves.

Denizens
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Denizens are entities born from the Land, and their appearances can vary wildly from Land to Land. The function of the Denizen and its relationship to the Land aside from the obvious is unknown. Some can be indistinguishable from humans, others can only best be described as vague shapes. The only common feature they share is the inability to leave the Land. A Denizen may fight against others or even against the Land itself. However, a Denizen cannot lay a hand on The Master of the Land. There is some sort of distinction that will compel a Denizen to not fight a Master of the Land directly. They are often neutral to the existence of Undead, though they react differently to Demons.

Demons
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

No one knows where Demons come from. Some claim that they are exiles of Lands unknown. Others say that they come from somewhere beyond the Dreaming. All they have in common is that when they show up, trouble begins. Beware engaging Demons in any way, for they often attempt to kill anything that gets close. As incredibly dangerous as they are within the Dreaming, they are the most deadly considering that Insane Undead can draw Demons into the Waking World, where they may attempt to possess the Undead's body for their own agenda.

Mechanics

Sleep
Even as an Immortal Undead, your body requires rest. However, the Soul and Body are disjointed, with only the Mind to connect them when one falls asleep. In this state, they are most vulnerable to attempts at Demonic Possession or simply becoming a hollow shell. It's in the best interest of an Undead to return to their body after entering The Dreaming. Any type of Mortal damage cannot kill the dead already, so the body with default to a sleeping state and releases the Soul into the Dreaming upon any excessive damage.

Sanity
As an Undead, you become privy to Universal Workings that typical mortals have no idea exists. Undead who learn to navigate the Dreaming begin to learn tricks to survive in a rapidly changing environment. This obviously becomes a problem when a human mind begins to learn rules and methods of bending them it was not meant to know. This understanding of such rules create a loss of cohesion between the Dreaming and the Waking World, which always attracts Demons. The closer one comes to understanding the Truth, the further one is considered tethered to the reality known as the Waking World

Classes
Your class will determine what kind of traits your character will exhibit in the world of The Dreaming. The criteria in which they fall under is not indicative of when they are usable, but only the situations these sorts of powers are geared towards certain usages. Feel free to try and abuse the powers to your hearts content... if you have the sanity to spare.

Here are some example classes. More may be added. Custom ones must be run by me first.
Combat:
Psychopath
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Those considered to be Psychopaths allow their mind corrode in order to gain power, ironically, to retain their sanity. Psychopaths excel at blitzing anyone and anything that they instinctively consider a danger.
Focused stats:
Insanity Accumulation: High

Social:
Negotiator
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Negotiators have the power to make or break deals with the denizens of The Dreaming. They excel at gathering potential allies while keeping their enemies just out of their reach.
Focused stats:
Insanity Accumulation: Low

Exploration:
Manipulator
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Rather than interact with Denizens or the Master, Manipulators interact with the Land itself, changing the Land and its qualities much like Lucid Dreaming. Manipulators are excellent at changing the environment to suit their needs.
Focused stats:
Insanity Accumulation: High
