A game like TiTs

Hi so I'm looking to make a game like Trials in Tainted space mostly as a means to learn and challenge myself and maybe release it for others who might be interested in playing it as it comes along. I'm just trying to get an idea of how to get started with like what program/s to learn and look up,and all that, I am looking at Unity right now but I'm not sure if it would be the best option.
