Holy Crap, Unity Engines!

So I've known for a while that the Unity store has a bunch of ready-to-go game templates and starter kits. Since I'm already feeling annoyed with how much programming I have to do in Bungaroids, I thought I'd look up what they have available, and WHOA, there's a lot of stuff that might be genuinely useful.

But, before I go on a game engine downloading spree, they do cost money. I've made a list of the engines that look useful, with their price and a first impression. I need to take the time at some point to do some research on these engines and think about what sort of games I could make with them. If any of you have experience with these engines, or have an opinion on what would be coolest for porn games, please let me now.

Some of the prices are sale prices. It might be different if you're checking back months or years later.

Okay, I did some more recon today, so let me jot down my notes.

To start with, I was actually pretty disappointed with the Invector Melee Combat Template and the Ultimate Survival template. They both clearly have great production value, but Melee Combat Template was incredibly clunky, and Ultimate Survival's controls didn't make any sense. Maybe UlSur's controls are borrowing from some kind of game I'm not familiar with, or maybe being sick and tired and struggling to stay awake has prevented me from grasping the true beauty of UlSur's demo, but nonetheless, if I can't be bothered to figure it out, why should I think people who want internet porn will be any more eager to figure it out.

I was greatly impressed with HitBear Studio's various projects. There are several projects besides the one I linked to above. There one that's basically a slimmed down version of the Action RPG engine, which I actually kinda like better and it's only $20. They also do a Top-Down Action RPG, which is more of the camera angle that I would prefer, but it's pretty clunky, partly because it seems to be designed for, euugh, mobile platforms... There's also a Shooter RPG which was pretty fun, also $50 I think. Since the Shooter RPG also has melee attacks, I think I could make almost the same kind of game with either the Action RPG system or the Shooter RPG system. One thing that might be a setback is that the reviews indicate that these projects are not easy to modify. On the one hand, the demo projects are pretty cool, and I could be perfectly happy with just adding my own artwork and levels, but on the other hand, making action RPGs or Beat 'em Ups is something I've spent a lot of time thinking about, and it's something I would eventually want to get creative with. So I would probably get the $20 project to see what it's like and upgrade to one of the others later.

The TBTK looks very useful, I also found some tutorials about how to use it online. I was originally worried that it would only be usable for mecha or lightly animated combat, but the creator has a video of loading humanoids into the system. (which actually didn't work for him in his video, but it shows me he at least wants it to be available, and he's probably been working on it since then) His demo also features a "JRPG" combat feature, which is intriguing. The whole demo definitely gives me the impression that the TBTK is designed to be flexed and formed into many different strategy game formats.

I also played that Sci-Fi top down shooter example. It's all nice and neat until combat starts, and then it turns into a complete shit-show, which, as discussed in some other development topic earlier, is probably more to do with the WASD+M format. Anyways, doesn't get me excited to use it. But it does remind me that the TBTK guy also makes a Top Down Shooter Toolkit (TDSTK). Let me play that demo real quick .... ! Wow! Pretty cool, feels a bit more lively, and there's even a Scrolling Shooter mode and leveling up and a skill system, which makes me think you might be able to make a dungeon crawler with the TDSTK. I'll have to look for some tutorials later and see what kind of animation support there is, but for now, it's time to go to work, seeya.

Nice finds. You come by anything related to modular character creation. I'm kinda tired of using DAZ and am not really digging that UMA 2 bullshit

I like the unity link. The cgtrader link is pretty hot, too, but the all star models are already ready to deploy, the only downside is that they don't possess nipples. Also it'll be hard finding maps where they fit in because their style is so distinct. So nah; but let me know if you find any more assets :).

$95 Dungeon Architect: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/53895 I bought it because it is/was on sale and it won some kind of award from Unity. Looks like it has the ability to do some very high-end stuff, but it's tricky to figure out.

$75 DunGen: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/15682 Some of the reviews for Architect felt that DunGen was comparable but different. Architect is per-grid tile, DunGen is per room.

$60 Dungeon Master: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/79435 Looks less professional than the others, but maybe that's just their art department. This one allows you to make platformer levels as well.
