Holy Crap, Unity Engines!

Postby AcetheSuperVillain » Mon Aug 28, 2017 5:32 pm

So I've known for a while that the Unity store has a bunch of ready-to-go game templates and starter kits. Since I'm already feeling annoyed with how much programming I have to do in Bungaroids, I thought I'd look up what they have available, and WHOA, there's a lot of stuff that might be genuinely useful.

But, before I go on a game engine downloading spree, they do cost money. I've made a list of the engines that look useful, with their price and a first impression. I need to take the time at some point to do some research on these engines and think about what sort of games I could make with them. If any of you have experience with these engines, or have an opinion on what would be coolest for porn games, please let me now.

Some of the prices are sale prices. It might be different if you're checking back months or years later.

Character Based Game Engines
$55 3rd Person Controller - Melee Combat Template: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/44227
(Looks like a very professional game system, includes things like inventory and AI)

$45 Sci Fi Top Down Game Template: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/84667
(Pretty good looking WASD+M dungeon crawler with guns kinda game)

$15 Goblins & Magic: Game Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/74731
(This one I need to research more. It doesn't look very useful as-is, but it looks like it's designed to be flexible and support adding things on)

$15 3D Platformer Game Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/59044
(It got good reviews. Not sure about this, since Unity has an excellent built-in platformer engine)

$70 Top Down RPG Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/15552
(A MMO style RPG with cutesy graphics. Inventory, AI, Dialog Engine, etc, included)

$10 GameStar18's 3D Fighting Engine: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/92955
(Not a great looking demo, but this is because he's not great with graphics, which I would replace anyways, and it's cheap)

$299 Universal Fighting Engine Bundle: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/24884
(Crazy professional looking fighting game engine, but crazy expensive)

$5 JRPG Battle Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/49106
(This is a pretty simple battle system, looks like it's designed for a game that's only battle system, not meant to be incorporated into other game mechanics)

$20 Side Scrolling 2.5D Shooter: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/55488
(Maybe good for a Metal Slug style game. Not usually my thing, but the ragdoll deaths were funny, the destructable terrain was cool, and people do want a new version of Corta's splatformer)

$15 Action Game Kit (v1.5): https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/12359
(This one is very hinky looking, but a decent price)

$50 Hitbear Studio's Action-RPG Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/9076
(Hitbear actually has several products that look very good. At first I was worried that they were just using cute girls to cover up shoddy quality, but it does look like they are giving you a lot of content aimed at the kind of games that I like and I would want to make)

$30 Action RPG Framework: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/31419
(This one on the other hand, looks like the kind of shitty RPGs that I usually don't like, but there have been a few that I found fun, and I think the devil is in the details, not the game engine, so I could probably use this to make a decent game)

$20 Top Down 2D RPG - Starter Version: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/43566
(Looks similar to RPGMaker, but with Zelda style combat)

$30 3D Action RPG Game Scene Example: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/17554
(I can't tell if this is just a shitty mobile app approximation of an RPG battle system, or something with potential. Seems to come with a lot of graphics)

1st Person Game Engines
$10 First Person RPG Template: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/39374
(Looks like an engine for games like Doom. I think it would work for 3D graphics too, maybe)

$40 VOXL - Multiplayer Voxel Sandbox: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/75829
(Basically it's Minecraft. I've got no interest in the Multiplayer aspect, but holy shit, it's Minecraft)

$35 Ultimate Survival: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/80368
(This engine keeps showing up as a recommendation and top pick and so on. Looks like a shitload of stuff is included. Might be more than I really want, but the price isn't bad)

$10 Craft Engine: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/83058
(A slimmed down version of Ultimate survival, I think)

$25 First Person Adventure: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/46563
(Looks like a system for making Escape type games)

Strategery
Free HexGrid: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/27440
(I've always wanted to make hexagon grid games)

$60 Turn-Based Toolkit(TBTK): https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/10686
(A tool for making various types of Turn Based Strategy games, square or hexagon grids)

$60 Turn Based Battle System: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/18940
(A tool for making a very specific sort of TBS RPG battle system, but it's pretty cool looking)

$15 Turn-Based Strategy Framework: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/50282
(A cheaper version of the TBTK, I think. It doesn't come with graphics, and if that's what the extra $45 is buying me, then I don't need graphics, that's my job)

$5 Dungeon Crawler - Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/84484
(A bare-bones looking rogue-like dungeon crawler. It looks like a far cry from what I would call a real rogue-like, but might still be fun. I'm not sure how easy it would be to expand on the graphics, like if I can make my own characters or dungeon tiles. But for 5 bucks, ehh, I can give it a shot.)

$3 Dungeon Crawler Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/7302
(Bitch, get your own name. This is a 2D engine, but it's a kind of game I like, and I can always use prerenders)

Vehicle Game Engines
$10 Robot Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/38677
(Looks like I could use it to make something like Cosmic Break, I don't think any AI or anything is included for things that aren't the player robot)

$19 Refined Airplane Control: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/50239
(A flight simulator kind of engine, some guns are included)

$15 Space Conqueror 3D Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/66901
(A very basic forward scrolling 3D shooter, like early StarFox or the Gummi Ship minigame in Kingdom Hearts)

$50 Racing Game Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/22615
(Pretty cool looking racing game system. Comes with AI, which is one of the big hurdles to doing racing games)

$15 Car Parking Kit 2.2: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/71914
(Sounds weird, but it might work for making the driving system in a GTA style game. I'd still need another engine for the rest of the game)

$2 Simple Space Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/12647
(Another flight simulator type game, for 2 bucks, it's worth a shot)

Free SBP Vehicle Physics: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/60459
(Looks kinda crap, but it's free. There's a 2.0 version that is $35)

$15 Kawaii Tanks Project: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/87414
(Not sure why low poly shermans blasting the turrets off of tiger tanks is kawaii, but good price and solid looking engine)

Miscellaneous Game Engines
$5 Mini Golf Starter Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/3237
(Not something I would normally want to make, but cheap price and very nice looking YouTube demo)

Free Lost Land Game Template: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/10762
(I think this is just a terrain piece, maybe a terrain generator)

$299 City Building & Battle Perfect Kit: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/61716
(An engine for making Pharaoh type games I think, except sci-fi. Something I've always wanted to do, but holy shit, 300 bucks and it's not something I could easily pornify)

$45 ICE Creature Control: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/35364
(This is a neat looking tool for managing AI behavior. Not sure if it's worth the price, but looks like something that could be used for multiple types of projects)

$30 uConstruct - Runtime Building System: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/51881
(I think this is a tool for building things in-game, like making houses in The Sims)

Okay, I did some more recon today, so let me jot down my notes.

To start with, I was actually pretty disappointed with the Invector Melee Combat Template and the Ultimate Survival template. They both clearly have great production value, but Melee Combat Template was incredibly clunky, and Ultimate Survival's controls didn't make any sense. Maybe UlSur's controls are borrowing from some kind of game I'm not familiar with, or maybe being sick and tired and struggling to stay awake has prevented me from grasping the true beauty of UlSur's demo, but nonetheless, if I can't be bothered to figure it out, why should I think people who want internet porn will be any more eager to figure it out.

I was greatly impressed with HitBear Studio's various projects. There are several projects besides the one I linked to above. There one that's basically a slimmed down version of the Action RPG engine, which I actually kinda like better and it's only $20. They also do a Top-Down Action RPG, which is more of the camera angle that I would prefer, but it's pretty clunky, partly because it seems to be designed for, euugh, mobile platforms... There's also a Shooter RPG which was pretty fun, also $50 I think. Since the Shooter RPG also has melee attacks, I think I could make almost the same kind of game with either the Action RPG system or the Shooter RPG system. One thing that might be a setback is that the reviews indicate that these projects are not easy to modify. On the one hand, the demo projects are pretty cool, and I could be perfectly happy with just adding my own artwork and levels, but on the other hand, making action RPGs or Beat 'em Ups is something I've spent a lot of time thinking about, and it's something I would eventually want to get creative with. So I would probably get the $20 project to see what it's like and upgrade to one of the others later.

The TBTK looks very useful, I also found some tutorials about how to use it online. I was originally worried that it would only be usable for mecha or lightly animated combat, but the creator has a video of loading humanoids into the system. (which actually didn't work for him in his video, but it shows me he at least wants it to be available, and he's probably been working on it since then) His demo also features a "JRPG" combat feature, which is intriguing. The whole demo definitely gives me the impression that the TBTK is designed to be flexed and formed into many different strategy game formats.

I also played that Sci-Fi top down shooter example. It's all nice and neat until combat starts, and then it turns into a complete shit-show, which, as discussed in some other development topic earlier, is probably more to do with the WASD+M format. Anyways, doesn't get me excited to use it. But it does remind me that the TBTK guy also makes a Top Down Shooter Toolkit (TDSTK). Let me play that demo real quick .... ! Wow! Pretty cool, feels a bit more lively, and there's even a Scrolling Shooter mode and leveling up and a skill system, which makes me think you might be able to make a dungeon crawler with the TDSTK. I'll have to look for some tutorials later and see what kind of animation support there is, but for now, it's time to go to work, seeya.

Nice finds. You come by anything related to modular character creation. I'm kinda tired of using DAZ and am not really digging that UMA 2 bullshit

Nah, I haven't really been looking for character stuff, since that's the part I like to do myself. But I remember liking this: https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/char ... f-my-girls and this: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/43181

I like the unity link. The cgtrader link is pretty hot, too, but the all star models are already ready to deploy, the only downside is that they don't possess nipples. Also it'll be hard finding maps where they fit in because their style is so distinct. So nah; but let me know if you find any more assets :).

Let me link directly to some of the demos that I've been enjoying.

First, these are Hitbear Studio's projects, all of these are direct downloads:
Action RPG $50: https://www.dropbox.com/s/23p3z2vlkknu6 ... 4.rar?dl=0
Action Game $20: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lx5pb023lkhvl ... o.rar?dl=0
Top Down Action RPG $50: https://www.dropbox.com/s/99a8o9giv3jwx ... o.rar?dl=0
Shooting RPG $50: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4c0poy0to3j8j ... 2.rar?dl=0

And here are the Turn Based Toolkit (TBTK) and Top Down Shooter Toolkit (TDSTK), these are WebGL demos you can play from the browser:

Just added a few new ones to the list. I don't think I want them for me, but maybe it will be helpful to someone else:

$20 Top Down 2D RPG - Starter Version: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/43566
(Looks similar to RPGMaker, but with Zelda style combat)

I also went looking at some dungeon generating add-ons.

$95 Dungeon Architect: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/53895 I bought it because it is/was on sale and it won some kind of award from Unity. Looks like it has the ability to do some very high-end stuff, but it's tricky to figure out.

$75 DunGen: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/15682 Some of the reviews for Architect felt that DunGen was comparable but different. Architect is per-grid tile, DunGen is per room.

$60 Dungeon Master: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/79435 Looks less professional than the others, but maybe that's just their art department. This one allows you to make platformer levels as well.
