Another Legend of Krystal Attempt

Postby IrrelevantComment » Sat Sep 07, 2013 3:36 pm

I've been working on creating a new LoK game, using artwork from previous projects. I'll go into what I want to do with the game more as (or if) I make more progress with it, but for now I want to talk about combat. So that it isn't just a repetitive slideshow 'game', I want to add a simple combat system. In combat, each combatant (up to 3 a side) has a cooldown bar, which fills up between attacks. When the bar is full, the combatant can perform one move from a choice of 6, and each depletes the bar by a given amount. It's kind of like Pokemon crossed with Final Fantasy. Anyway, mashed up a battle system in a few hours, and the first results are below.

I figure this won't make much sense to anyone else so I should probably explain it: there are two moves, heal and fire. The first one heals and the second one damages (duh). At the moment, both the moves are just a simple animation and a green or red light respectively to indicate which move is being used. Also, the light is on the caster atm, not the target. Just ignore that, heavy work in progress. To use a move, select it from the list when your bar is full (you control the second Krystal) and click an orange triangle to target.

On my laptop, the first runs at 24fps and the second at 16fps.
The things I want to know are:
1) What do you think of the combat system in general?
2) What do you think of putting the combat system in LoK?
3) Did the version with idle animations lag for you? How much?
4) Would you prefer the higher frame rate version, or the lower frame rate one with animations?
5) Thoughts on the UI?

Feedback is appreciated, thanks

What you have so far is great why don't you post this thread on the creative corner ?

So for your 5 questions here 5 answer :

1) I love RPG style combat. But maybe the time should freeze when it's your turn because you don't have time to choose your abilities. Also when you use the abilities if the mouse leave the area of the abilities they just disapear and you have to click again, very annoying (but hard to explain well).
Oh and the foe selection is too small you should be able to click on the enemy or on a bigger arrow above him.

2) Great idea but it needs a lot of ennemies because it can be boring quickly if you always fight the same ennemies.

3)Don't lag I'm a 17 fps, sure it's slower than the other but nothing too serious.

4) Don't knwo what is a frame rate but I prefer the second animation with the character who moves the other is way too static for me.

5) Don't understand this question xD

Partly because it's not really in a playable state at the the moment, I want to have a more cohesive and functional demo before putting it in the CC. And partly because at the moment I'm not ready to commit to trying to finish this game, or work on it long term, so I felt discussion was more appropriate for now.

I get what you mean about the time taking too long. I'm not sure I want to freeze it though, I might try other ways around it like making your character's bar recover faster to account for the time delay, so although it takes longer to choose moves you can do it more often.

Fair point about the selection and the abilities, I'll try to make those easier to use

I'm glad you like the idea. I'm working to put male and female SharpClaw in at the moment, then hopefully I will be able to find somebody else to help out with other enemies because I can't draw at all

By frame rate I mean the fps, the rate at which the screen updates. I think I'm going to use the second one, but add options to disable the animations for people who want the higher fps.

UI is user interface, I meant the way the game data is displayed and the player interacts with the game, but you answered this in your first question. Thanks for the feedback, helped a lot :)

Honestly, the sex isn't really a huge concern for me right now. I want to get the game playable before I think about that, and maybe get an animator to help me out with them. What I do know is that I want to take this in a different direction to the original LoK and make the sex more consensual. Also the sex scenes will be earned through gameplay through quests and such.
