Newbie

Postby Rally » Thu Jul 21, 2011 8:48 am

So, as the title says, I'm a newbie. Just joined a few hours ago after lurking these forums forever. I've seen a few posts where people like Katsu say they're willing to offer help or advice to anyone that needs it. I was hoping to get some questions answers, opinions and all that because I want to start working with flash animation. Not too sure if this is the right section of the forums to be posting this in, but I figured that if I eventually post my project up here then it'll fit.

Well I mean I can move this post if you guys want, if it's not going to be appropriate here. :P Because these questions are gonna seem really stupid and basic. But I see you guys have these models up on the site and I can't figure out what program you guys are using to make them. I've been drawing up characters for myself lately, but I don't know how to get them onto my computer like you guys have them. I mean I should probably say it, if my original post didn't, but I'm REALLY new onto this flash scene.

And my idea is sort of a play off of Legend of Krystal. Just different world, different characters. I have an entire story outline already put together and like I said I'm trying to improve on my drawing. Not the best but I'm willing to practice. :P I actually have no history with flash animating programs, but I have animated a few 3D things. So I'm also going to be teaching myself animating and coding if it's possible to learn from the internet. xD

I am using Adobe Flash Cs5 but that doesnt mean you have to as well, I recomend you start of with the latest one which is Cs5.5. Why I dont use it is because Cs5 is probebly about the same and it doesnt really matter what verision you have unless you have Cs3. Dont worry, there is no stupid questions as long as you are serious and it is nothing wrong if they are basic.

Well I mean, how exactly do you build your characters? I've seen a few tutorials around the net but I can never really get them to look like you guys do, and you guys make it seem like it's nothing. xD I'm also slowly starting to figure out that I might just not be the animating type. Figuring out the coding and stuff in AS3 is totally kicking my ass.

People will get mad I say this but: as3 is not for beginner. When you make a new flash, choose AS2 option, it is a much simpler coding language and very friendly to new users.

I'm not gonna get mad about something like that. :P Although that makes a lot more sense now because all the tuts practically made no sense to me. xD I'm just not much of a code person though. I don't know I just couldn't wrap my head around some of the things it was trying to explain.

How hard it is to learn coding always depends on how complex you want your game. viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1457 In the end of this tutorial i show a game that is basecly just made by using two different codes and it is a very good start.

See the biggest problem is I'm not too sure how to get started. At the moment I'm just drawing on paper and practicing on figures of people.

If you are practicing on paper with pencil, the next step would be to digitize them using a scanner (if you have one), and then importanting them to a digital medium. You can import them directly into whatever program you are using, in this case flash, and then divide the parts up into a moving model before finishing it off with line art and colors.

And that was a great answer! Thanks! I'm gonna go work on some stuff and hopefully get it looking good so I can show it off here in a few days. xD Also, I have all the adobe programs in I think CS5. Would you say Firework, Flash Pro, or Photoshop for doing the art?

Flash can be used for everything and anything and i recomend to use it for everything as well. In fact you cant basecly edit a image that is made in a bitmap program like photoshop or paint in flash.
