Progamming languages and Game mechanics

Postby Zinnel » Tue Dec 06, 2011 11:11 am

I'm curious (As whether this is the right section) if learning a programming would be beneficial?* After several recommendations I'd like to continue learning python (I'm still a noob), because I understand it would help me implement elements such as dialogue options that aren't linear, and an the added option of an inventory, and whatever we'd like.

A simple Yes or No answer would suffice, but the question really is if a Python plug-in is compatable with Flash Studio 4? or any other recommendation with reasons why (Lua is still an option to me, and I haven't purchased Flash yet. Which is why I'd like to ask in advance which means I can buy a recommended book on the subject later on today. :3)

*A Language other than Flash's action script.

Whether it is worth learning depends on what you want to do with it/how much you will enjoy it. Personally I really enjoy programming so it was definitely worth it for me.

Having said this, unsure if you know no languages, or know one and want to learn another?

My previous experience with programming languages is based on an old textbook I had on a now outdated version of Blender Studio for 3D animation, which utilised some python plugins and had the odd tutorial, while I have an idea of how it works, I'm still a complete beginner yet I have an idea of how it'll help me work on game mechanics. Although I've asked around and people have also recommended Acton Script. I see game play as greater target than animation (which I've had more practice in.) so I'd rather want to design features I could do then work on the sprites.

So personally this is my own uneducated opinion i would go with Java if you don't have a advantage with vector shapes.
However what you need to do is find a language that you like and stick with it for as long as you can.

i can help with java and would love some one to help me with my program.
A lot of people know java but i can't tell you if they will help.
i think some one knows lua or maybe Python.

As for plug in's i don't know.
Here's what links i got and i don't even know there contents.

Coming from someone who works as a IT manager, I recommend graduating from python.

It is an ok program, but you can't really go far with it. Most of my coding skills go with HTML, and PhPbb, but I do have some experience with XML (if you count it), Java, Lua, and C++, which are used for games.

I personally like C++ and C#, but that's because I find java hard to use sometimes.

java's hard hmf your C++ encapsulation is weird as hell with your <<<something bla b la bla >>>
Besides i don't have to import a third party library for my GUI. what about you and your C++?

Anyways what Suraru says is true from what i know. I learn on java and so over coming the challenges was just something i had to do to get my programs working.
i don't at all look at it as a limitation but thats because i haven't tried something like C#.

Also i don't think C++ & C# can be used on a mac with out editing the code in someway. am i correct?

I'm not sure about Macs, I'm a PC guy, I only took a short college course and forgot most of it. Luckily for my company all of our computers are PCs, so I was made manager of the IT team because I knew PC the best, and I've been with Omaha Steaks for a while compared to those trying to get the position.

Sorry for the ramble, but the main idea is, I'm not good with Macs lol.... I'm boned if we ever get any XD
