Chapter 1: Unknown threats

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Bella woke up fairly early in the morning, a few hours before she was open for business. The sun was just rising and the morning birds chirped and sang happily. A strong breeze came from the west thanks to an approaching storm system that made brilliant, cascading clouds visible for miles. Which caused the temperature to drop drastically. After going about her morning routine, she would head outside to stockpile on some parts she was running low on, specifically a magic infused oil that made car engines run smooth. However, at the front of her store sat a middle-aged looking man in a uniform

belonging to the University of Jugar, who was idly picking splinters off a nearby support beam and flinging them, one by one, at beetles that were crawling across the ground in front of him. As she stepped outside, he seemed to hear her footsteps, and quickly stood straight up off the bench, and straightened his uniform, as if he hadn’t just been doing anything really silly. He cleared his throat and stuck his hand out towards Bella, taking a step forward, but he drags the foot he moves, causing it to collide with a tiny bug, at which point he trips and falls. He quickly scrambles to his feet, stating flatly “Hello, I am Nobor Dinglefitz, and I’d just like to say that I not only was not just flinging splinters at bugs, but I also have very important information that you, no doubt, would like to hear.” seemingly hoping Bella did not see him trip.

Alexander woke per his usual schedule, doing his usual routine, putting on his usual clothes, and going to his usual classes. The College of Trinity was quite fancy, though a mere shack compared to the University of Jugar just a few miles away, it still glittered with gilded trimmings, polished woods, large and expensive looking paintings, and all sorts of lavish decorations. Of course, that was considered middle of the road for the kingdom. His Summoning Practices 2 professor, Dr. Rheshul, was out for unknown reasons, and in his place sat a incompetent substitute who seemed to know next to nothing about summoning except from what Rheshul must've handed them on a paper that a preschooler could understand. A new student that Alexander had never seen before was also attending the class, she had black hair, tied back in a braid, and was wearing a black sailor-style shirt with a red tie, a white skirt, and black thigh-highs.
Image
The new student also kept looking over at Alexander every so often. In yet another strange turn of events, one of the schools administrators went to every class Alexander had for the day. She seemed surprised every time she walked into the classroom and noticed Alexander, and only stayed for few minutes, writing some stuff down on a clipboard before going away. By the time his 5 classes had ended, it would be hard to believe if it was just plain coincidence.

At the end of the class period, it was difficult to tell what to make of these happenings. Yet there was one more thing that happened before he could even go back to his dorm. The new girl got up, walked straight to Alexander, then stuck out her hand, with a bright smile on her face. “Hi! I’m Sephera!” Sephera then gave Alexander one of the most over-enthusiastic handshakes he had ever experienced, with an even more over-enthusiastic smile, and started talking before he could even respond. In more words than anyone could ever use in a run-on sentence, she told him that she was from the College of Acterice in Korat and had just transferred, was really happy to meet him, liked his school, his teachers, all of the people there, just generally named off absolutely everything about the place, saying she liked it all. Her entire spiel happened in under five minutes, but she seemed to go on for hours, and probably would have if she wasn’t talking so fast. When she finally finished, shaking his hand the entire time, she looked at him, smiling and waiting for a response.

The Desolate Wall, a 6 foot thick Titanium- vanadium metal wall with a defensive magical barrier normally restricted to the heaviest of military vehicles or fortifications. Stretching across the 245 mile border between Rasard and the Southlands, it was covered in AA guns, cannons, magical lasers, and other such weaponry. A quick estimation could easily yield the fact that more money and manpower went into this wall than any other structure or development in Rasard. If one heads to the tri-border where Rasard, Korat, and the Southlands converge, once can see Korat put the same amount of effort into their side. Where the two walls converge stands a large tower where the two nations meet and discuss happenings around the wall. Both countries were dead serious about this wall, and preferred to keep those they felt didn’t belong outside.

Past the wall was just a blighted desert with little to no vegetation or water. The few years Corporal Sarah spent in the military, she saw nothing past that wall. Layers upon layers of nothing. Not to mention it was really hot, it easily shot past the normal comfortable temperatures a human could stand, and walking her route on that wall was really taxing. However, when she woke up at 0700 this morning, she would have one of the biggest surprises of her life. Right after roll call, her sergeant, sergeant Volker, led her squad to the briefing room and laid out a bunch of papers.

“Alright men, we have a very special assignment today.” He paused and looked over the group. “You have all patrolled the Desolate wall for a few years now. As you know, every once in a while the Generals order a squad to head into the desert and report back their findings. What they report back is highly classified… Men, early this morning I received a letter from General Sark… It is our turn to go into the desert.” Volker let this news sink in. Very few squads get chosen for the task, and no one knows what they see when they go. “We will meet here again at 1200 hours. The general told us to not go at night, so I'm afraid you will have to bear the heat. Go get ready, dismissed.” Volker waved away the squad as a sign of dismissal and let them get their gear ready.

Cecilia’s first reaction of getting out of the hospital was to get payback. The ninjutsu practitioner has gone without stolen goods for too long! Today was the day she would fix that. As she has told herself many many times beforehand. She had managed to find his place of residence, a fairly middle-class home that blended in with all the others around it. It was two stories with a basement, had a soft tan color on its siding, and had an overabundance of windows, letting everyone see what’s inside. From what she could see, it looked normal inside, with a kitchen, living room, and foyer all visible. Now if only she could get inside without getting the stuffing kicked out of her. She had tried many times before, but today was special, today would be the the last of many tries, she could feel it. Then again, maybe it was the strong breeze coming from the approaching storm system that made beautiful cascading clouds, but promised plenty of rain. First however, she needed to get in. How she planned to get inside was the first step of many, and arguably the most crucial part.

A perfect day for breaking and entering, to steal that slab. It was a slab of black rock, with glowing purple etchings on it, in a language she could not even begin to decypher. While magical items weren’t exactly rare, they had to made in a certain way by certain people, and so where always pricey. It was no doubt going to fetch a pretty penny.
I hurt you, I heal you, I hurt you again. That's the pattern.

Awaking to the sound of her alarm, Bella yawned before smashing her hand over the snooze button. She groggily got out of bed, her half-asleep mind still quite aware of the day and what errands she had to run. She only had a few hours until opening time so every second counted.

Bella shivered, the air being a whole lot colder than it was last night, when she figured sleeping naked was a good idea. She grumbled to herself, grabbing her blanket (and wrapping it around herself, of course) off the bed and walking over to her closet to throw open the closet doors and quickly grab her yellow jacket. She threw it on her bed, knowing she'd have to shower first before she could wear it. That said, she decided to do that as quickly as possible. Getting the rest of her casual wear onto the bed, she then threw the blanket back to the same direction, before marching through the hall to her bathroom. It was a cold and painful walk.

Fast forward 30 minutes later, Bella was now dressed in her always impressive casual wear, her hair still damp since she was rushing and neglected to dry it properly. She walked into her kitchen, making a quick peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast and scarfing it down as she moved to the door that led into the business part of her small house. A mental check on all the things she needed; magic oil, another pack of screws, more paint for the paint job, bread for her sandwiches, a pack of beer, and new jumper cables. Her last ones finally gave out after a good time of service. Goodnight, sweet jumper cables... you will be missed. Never can any other jumper cables perform as admirably as you did.

Her thoughts were interrupted at the sight of the uniformed man engaging in the rather odd action he was. Bella knew that sort of thing would be described as 'childish', but she was the last person to bust someone's balls over not acting their age. She knew she could still act like she's 10 years younger sometimes... but she still found it a weird way to pass the time. Closing the door and making a particular amount of effort in being very noticeable (which is essentially what she does all the time), she walked over to the man.

She had to hold in her laughter as he tried to act natural, literally fumbled his approach, and then introduced himself. Dinglefitz? Dinglefitz! What kind of name was Dinglefitz! Inwardly, she was chortling as loud as she could, but outwardly she only exhibited a tight smile that... really didn't hide the fact that she was holding back laughter. "Y-yeah... n-nice to meet you, Mr... Mr. D-Dingle..." She coughed loudly to disguise the snicker that came after the end of her sentence. Bella really wasn't doing any favors for herself with this, and realizing this, she took a second to calm herself down...

... Well, calm enough. Sucking in a deep breath, she then gave a polite smile as if to try and help Mr. Dinglefitz (noticeable twitch, let's just call him Nobor) forget the bad memory of his humiliation. "So, you some kind of door-to-door salesman, right? I don't have much time, so if you're gonna sell whatever product you are then you gotta give me that pitch in 10 minutes, tops."

The morning seemed to be the same as every other morning, until Sarah’s CO dropped a big surprise on her and the rest of the squad. She could see everyone around her being as surprised as she was. Then, different expressions. Some seemed excited, some nervous. The corporal definitely in the former camp and gave the sergeant a confident smirk. Finally, some excitement! How many days had she not stared into south with dreamy eyes, wondering what was out there? This was her childhood dream. Finally, she would discover some of the secrets beyond the wall. Maybe they’d find out the reason why Jugar was so keen on the area? Aliens? Dark magic? Natural forces unknown? Sarah was dreaming off again like she used to when she was younger, almost forgetting to move out when she was dismissed.

Noticing the rest of her squad had already left, she gave an awkward smile to Volker and quickly walked to the locker room to get her gear. Despite the never-ending austerity, the border guard of Rasard was stocked with the best equipment. And today Sarah might find out why that was. While she took her rifle, her sidearm, her helmet and all the other things she needed, her mind wandered off to the Southerlands again.

What if there were some resources there, or some hidden secret that would radically change the world? What in Cadai could have Rasard and Korat agreeing on this? It was a constant cause for rumours, speculation and conspiracy. Conveniently, every time someone seemed to get close to cutting expenses on the wall or even tearing it down, something happens to them, or they change their mind. At least, that’s what some people would have you believe. Sarah didn’t know, but she couldn’t imagine everyone here being here for nothing. Whatever the case, she was ready to face any danger to sate her curiosity. She checked if the safeties on her weapons were on and if any electronic equipment she had was still working. After that, she would spend any remaining time with calling her family (without telling them what was going on, of course) and just hanging around, looking backwards towards her homeland from the wall. Maybe this was the last time she’d ever see it? Sarah quickly got rid of the thought. She’d come back safe and sound, she had great colleagues, great equipment and they’d probably get great support. If anything were to happen, the entire army would come and safe them for sure.

Do your worst, desert.

Alexander awoke to what would most likely be a normal day. After a quick shower, he stepped in front of his mirror and stared at himself. Messaging his face, the young man began to practice his smile. It was a soft, inviting expression that would hopefully put others at ease. Once that was set he moved on to phrases. "Good Morning! Lovely Day. How are you doing?" He repeated to himself trying to make it sound like he actually cared. Once his morning exercises were finished his face returned to it's natural state, a bored expression.

The College of Trinity wasn't Alexander's first choose, in fact it was his third. Alexander had aimed rather high in his submission, even skipping over the University of Jugar. He figured that would be where he could learn the most about sacrificial summoning. But the College of Trinity was the more affordable option. And the knowledge he gained here would suffice.

It was easy to tone out the incompetent substitute during Summoning Practices. Though to an outside observer, it would look like he was still attentively writing notes. Glancing around the class, Alexander notices a couple new faces. First there was the new girl. Alexander would have simply ignored if she didn't keep looking in his direction. Begrudgingly, Alexander gave the new girl a wave and a smile. The second new face did a bit more the stand out. In each of his classes, Alexander could the see a School Administrators come in, take notes and leave. The young man had tried to lay low since coming to attended school here and avoided doing experiments with small animals like in the past. So whatever his stalker wanted was beyond him.

With the day over, Alexander attempted to leave for his dorm to do his own studying when the new girl stands right in front of him. With his practiced smile still on, he reaches out to shake Sephara's hand. Though he doesn't expect the over-enthusiastic handshakes or to have his ear talked off. But Alexander bears it, listening to Sephera's long introduction. Once the new girl stops. Alexander lets out an innocent chuckle. "I'm glad to here you're enjoying Jugar so far. I'm Alexander by the way." He said continuing to shake Sephera's hand, only stopping when she pulled back. "I must say I've never been to Korat but I've heard of the College of Acterice. It's quite the school" He said trying make small talk.

Cecilia crept up to the house, as quiet as a mouse, and began looking in each of the windows, from as low of a position as she could manage while still being able to see. When she came to the conclusion that the coast was clear, she attempted to quietly force the window open, hoping it wasn't locked, and if it was locked, she'd attempt to break the lock.

Once inside, she'd keep a close watch on all sides as she quietly crept to the room that the slab was in, watching for traps and security devices that could hinder her progress or get her caught. She kept her summoning gems close at hand as she attempted to remove the glass and take the slab off of its position in its room.

Mr. Dinglefitz lowered his voice suddenly and took out a cigarette, putting it in his mouth backwards without noticing "Little lady, I, Dinglefitz, am not selling anything. I'm a professional monster, supernatural, and spectral investigator. Judging from the information I've gathered by not stalking you at all for several months, you are being cursed as part of the feeding process of a very powerful monster. " he attempted to light his cigarette, but the back wouldn't light, and he huffed, then puffed nothing.

"As you can no doubt surmise, I'm here to help you find and stop this creature. Rest assured, you will no doubt need my services." He then huffed and puffed nothingness again, still not noticing that his cigarette was backwards and unlit, and ran his hand through his hair, striking a pose that was probably supposed to make the tone of the situation seem more serious.

“Its name is Caerus, and from what I know about it, it has no doubt been with you since your childhood. A being that gains energy from feeding on people's luck and fortune.” He let out another puff of nothingness, still not realizing its unlit. Yet he had a completely serious face and tone, seeming to try to come off as professional and intimidating. He stuck his arm out while looking in the opposite direction and attempted to lean on one of the support beams for the porch and missed it entirely, stumbling, but managing to catch his balance and try again, this time successfully leaning against the railing instead.

The girl grins brightly and claps her hands together. “Yes! The college of Acterice is one of the top colleges in the country! Of course compared to the ones here, it’s pretty middle of the road!” She then went on another 5 minute spiel about everything about Korat and the college she transferred from, just as fast and somehow even louder than her last spiel. Just when Alexander thought it would never end, she finally finished. “Well, that’s enough about me! Why don’t we go and get something for lunch or dinner?!” The girl seemed way too over-enthusiastic about absolutely everything. She suddenly leaned on him and hugged his arm, smiling up at him happily as she waited, pleadingly, for him to agree to get lunch or dinner with her.

When Sarah went back to the designated meeting area, about half the squad was already there, along with two unknown men dressed in University of Jugar clothing. They had sunglasses on an had the air of people that you did not want to mess with. They simply nodded when Sarah arrived but said nothing, and neither did anyone else. The silence continued until the other members of the squad arrived, making a total of 10 people. Sergeant Volker whispered something to one of the unknown men, who nodded and finally spoke up.

“As you all know, you are about to head into the Southlands. We are part of the Jugar government who is overseeing the expedition. Your jobs are to help us look around for anything unusual and keep us protected in case anything happens. We have a list of things considered normal and unimportant in the desert. These go as follows: Increased anxiety, overwhelming sense of dread, headaches, seeing movements out of the corner of your eyes, nausea, stomach pains, severe chills, and feelings of ‘needing to stay in the desert.’ Anything else is considered to be unusual and should be immediately reported to us. Are there any questions?” Once again, no one said anything, however most of the squad seemed disturbed by the list of ‘normalities’ and the sergeant seemed to have been already briefed or had a even better poker face then Sarah gave him credit for.

All was quiet within the house, and there was no sign of life this time, none whatsoever. From the state of the house’s interior, it looked as though nobody had been there for a few days, possibly even a week. This would mean that this slab was ripe for the picking. Finding the slab wasn’t actually that hard either. Sure it was a bit time consuming searching all over the house, but the slab was just out in the open, in the basement, a single lockpick away, as if begging to be stolen. It sat upon an altar, held up in a set of three claw-like structures, coated with silver, with the tips made of brass points. The set-up and styling was meticulous, with the base of the altar being covered in similar markings to the slab itself.

... Well, that sounded fishy. She didn't trust this crazy 'Nobor' one bit, and she honestly felt a little creeped out that someone had been getting that much information on her without her knowing. If he knows all of that, who knows what else he knows about her? How closely did he observe her? Did he sneak into her home without her noticing? No matter how she could spin this tale, it all ended with one simple fact; this Mr. Nobor was creepy and not to be trusted, and with her luck, doing so would just lead to a lot of bad shit.

"Alright, how much are you gonna swindle out of me?" But of course, even knowing this, she needed the deal. If there was even the slightest bit of a chance that she could be free from her curse... she'd have to take it. Not just for herself, but for Old Man Harvey and all the others who suffered because of her. Still, Bella wasn't an idiot. She tried to keep her tone of voice flat and sarcastic, as if she didn't believe him but was playing along. It'd help if she had to negotiate him down to a smaller price. To aid her act, she folded her arms and put on a poker face.

"... And your cig's backwards." She added as an afterthought. No point in letting the man make a fool of himself.

Alexander sits politely listening to Sephera. The young man tried to pick out anything useful from her spiel. But it was a lot of personal garbage. But when she'd asked to have lunch and/or dinner, it presented and interesting opportunity. With the schools administrators sniffing around, it might be useful to have someone around to throw off suspicion.

He nodded in agreement just as Sephera hugged his arm. Feeling her body against him caused his heart to beat a little faster. Now that he was closer to her, Alexander could appreciate how cute this girl actually was. While he could care less about a committed relationship, his body still yearned for a woman's touch. Yet he had to keep this raw desire in check lest he cross a line and blow his facade. But a meal should be fine.

"I think I'll take you up on that offer. Why don't we go for Dinner. I know of this great place close to the campus." Alexander replied as he supported Sephera's body and took her hands.

Sarah frowned when she saw the men from Jugar. The country full of mages and wealth usually meant trouble for their neighbours. Furthermore, they didn’t seem friendly at all, so Sarah decided to simply nod back. Volker seemed to be in on whatever was going in here, which made Sarah even more on edge.

The list the Jugarian called up made Sarah clench her teeth. She knew there was something weird about the South, but they made it sound like some sort of alien world. Anxiety, dread, nausea. These guys definitely knew more than they were telling Sarah. It was worth a shot to at least ask for more. Sarah raised her hand and waited for one of the suits to let her speak. “What kind of resistance are you expecting? Animals, magic, humans?”

After asking the question she focused closely on what kind of response the Jugar men would give. This was fishy and the more she knew the safer all of them were.

Cecilia would take this as an opportunity to finally, at long last, take the slab for herself. She would slide across the floor and spin, grabbing the slab mid twirl, and grab the slab off its altar. With the slab now in hand, would look it over briefly, and savor the moment, realizing in disbelief that she had finally done it. She would proceed to take a running dive through the open window that she had entered through.

Standing outside, she would hug the slab to her chest, smiling to herself happily, since she had succeeded after trying to take this object for what felt like a lifetime.

If all goes well, she would run all the way back to her hut that she lived in, and hide the slab in her personal chest, intending to sell it later, when the opportunity presents itself.

“Price? There is no price. The monster itself, if my theory proves correct, will be all the payment I need.” When Bella mentioned his cigarette, his eyes widened and he briefly froze in place. He stammered out something completely unintelligible, then threw the cigarette down on the ground, off the side of the porch, after which he turned back to Bella with a completely straight face, and asked “What cigarette?”, as he ran his hand through his bangs, doing his best to look suave. “That aside, I want to capture the creature, you want rid of the creature. If we work together, we can both win.” He then proceeded to shift his weight, stumbling briefly and just barely managing to catch himself on the railing, before quickly straightening back up and slicking his hair back again, as if nothing had happened. “Ahem” he cleared his throat “Here’s my card, call me when you’ve made the proper preparations for traveling. Expect a long journey.” he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a card… then dropping it and going for a second. As he went for the second card, he knocked a full stack out, causing them to clatter to the floor. Ignoring the blunder, he handed Bella the second card. The card was completely black, with “Dr. DINGLEFITZ” across the top, in white italics, and his number across the bottom.

“GREAT!” The girl practically blew Alexander’s eardrums out when he agreed to the ‘date.’ A few people nearby turned their heads to look at the two, and began staring at the odd pair. “So where is this place? Is it romantic? Do they serve steak? I really, REALLY like steak! Oh, but I also like pork chop, and hamburgers, and stir fry, and seafood, oh I just LOVE seafood!” The girl finally let go of his arm and lifted one of her feet up as she continued rambling, with no apparent end in sight, grinning so brightly at Alexander the entire time, that one may think he could go blind just from how cheery she was. As this was going on, the same person from before had walked over, a decent distance away, and was continuing to write on their clipboard, however, after looking up several times, they nodded and walked away.

The men stared straight at Sarah, sending a chill down her spine. The one to the left spoke up. “We do not expect a fight, there has never been a fight.” He seemed to emphasize the word never. “You are here just in case that changes.” The two then look away from her specifically and look at her squad mates. One of her squad mates, a private by the name of Steve, raises his hand. Steve was a tall guy with brown hair, who was wearing a pin on his helmet, which looked like a blue dog, and was wearing the strangest camo Sarah had ever seen, it was simple lighter and darker greens stripes all across his helmet and uniform, “But what do you expect us to fight if it does change?” he asked without waiting for permission. The two men then jerk their heads towards Steve, who shrinks back slightly at their gaze. The one on the right speaks, who sounded almost exactly like his compatriot. “We don’t know.” Steve then asks another question. “If nothing has ever showed up, and you don’t even know if anything is in the desert, then why do we have the wall up, and why are you expecting anything in the first place?” The two men say nothing, but stare down Steve. The longer they stare the more uncomfortable he seems, and visibly fidgets in his seat. After a long time, they finally look away. “Anything else?” however, after asking for more questions, the two men’s eyes widened briefly, and they looked at each other. They nodded, acknowledging that they had both just noticed the same thing, and looked back at Steve, asking “Private, why are you wearing a Blue Dog pin on your helmet, and why aren’t you in desert camo… or any camo at all? Better yet, where the hell did you get such a ridiculous and impractical uniform?” Steve blinked once, twice, then three times, seemingly stumped by the question, then looked himself over up and down… then shrugged “I… I have no idea. I put on desert camo, as instructed… I distinctly remember doing so...” he scratched his helmet and looked at the ground, however the two men didn’t seem to dwell on it even more, despite the inherently strange situation, and repeated themselves “Y-yeah… anymore questions?”

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Just as she had put the slab away in her chest, as if from a great distance away, yet loud and clear, Cecilia could hear angry shouting. The voice was distinctly feminine, and filled with anger, the voice only shouted one demand “RETUUURRRN THE SLAAAB” it bellowed, like a distant, raging hurricane, following up the first demand with more “RETUUURRRN THE SLAAAB, OR SUFFER MY CUUURSE”. Even as the voice said this, it began to gradually close in, little by little, each word in the demands coming from a closer location. The voice wasn’t closing in quickly, but it certainly wasn’t doing so slowly. The lettering on the slab started glowing a soft purple, and the slab started to burn. Not burn in the hot way, but as if it was suddenly made of acid and it was melting her skin off. Yet she couldn’t bring herself to let go. Suddenly, incomprehensible whispering started emanating from the slab. And she started to feel drawn into it, finding it harder and harder to look away. As if it was devoting all her attention to it.

Alexander noticed the person with the clipboard and couldn't help but smirk to himself. It seemed his plan worked for now. He didn't mind the other people staring at them. To any outside observer, they were just two students getting to know each other. "It has a rather homey feel to it. They serve steak, but their specialty is pasta" he said with a smile. Alexander then offered his hand to the excitable girl. "Well then Sephera, shall we be off? It's a bit of a walk" He said offering to escort her to the small restaurant off campus. Maybe on the way, he could figure out why this transfer student had taken an interest in him.

Left with far more cards than the man intended to give (one in her hand and a pile on the ground), Bella checked it around, a blank expression on her face, ignoring the man's bumbling as she was thinking. Dr. Di... Nobor. Dr. Nobor? Who the hell gave this guy a doctorate? "Alright. So, quick questions. One, why do you want this thing? Two, why do you need me to help you get it? And three; are you sure this is your number? Like, you didn't accidentally... type down the wrong number?" Nobor seemed like the exact type of person who would make a blunder like that. But the other questions were to assuage her suspicions.

She could see no good use for the monster that's supposedly plagued her, her whole life, but this Nobor guy didn't seem like the type who'd do wrong. Maybe he was kind of clumsy and awkward, but a criminal? She's met a few of those and they'd eat a man like him for breakfast. He just didn't have the air of someone capable of that stuff... so why would he need a terrible monster like that?

Sarah gulped, but kept looking back at the men. Better not show any weakness. There had never been a fight? Very well… Sarah grasped her gun more tightly, she would see about that.

Steve meanwhile asked the question on her own mind and Sarah was probably not the only one frustrated at the lack of an answer, or rather, the fact that these know-it-all people seemed to not, in fact, know it all. Then something weird happened. Steve, who, for all Sarah knew, was an upstanding soldier who wasn’t clumsy or absentminded, seemed to be in some sort of weird outfit. Had she not noticed it? Sarah found herself darting her eyes across the room, searching for anything else that was off. This was probably some sort of magic trick, right?

Blah/Bella:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

He cleared his throat and kept his face completely straight, while also adjusting his weight to his other side, stumbling a little and bumping into the side of the building, but he attempted to play it off by just leaning there instead, “Why would I want this thing you ask? Why, to capture and contain this creature in a safe place, of course! We can’t have such a creature running amok ruining peoples...ruining your life can we? As for your other questions, I need your help to get it because it is attached to you! How else could I track it? It would be nearly impossible without the victim. Therefor, without you, I can’t do anything about it, I would need to… extract it from you so to say, and without tracking it with you, extracting it could cause some amount of discomfort... and death… and yes, this is definitely my card. Why do you ask?“ he continued, taking out a hairbrush from his pocket, and lifting it to his hair, but fumbling and dropping it. He then glanced down at the dropped hairbrush and tried to pretend nothing happened, whilst sticking his hands in his pocket.

Mark3000/William:

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

The girl practically, once again, let out a squeal of delight and nodded so much her head might of fallen off if she had taken it any further. She took his hand, grabbing it surprisingly tightly, and Grinning as brightly as ever, pulled him in the wrong direction entirely. “Yes, let’s go! Oh I just can't wait!” she then stopped short, suddenly, nearly causing them to bump into each other and froze for what seemed like a solid minute, then burst out, nearly shouting “We’re going the wrong way!” then spun around to face the other way and started pulling Alex the right direction this time, and flat out ran the entire distance to the restaurant. Then practically dragged him inside and up to the front desk, then used her hip to bump him up to the person at the desk and hugged his arm.

The individual at the desk, a young girl, no older than 20, with brown hair down to her shoulders, and a modest chest. She wore the standard uniform for the restaurant staff, and spoke in a soft voice “Hello! You two are together, yes? Two seats?”

The girl spoke up immediately “Yes, we are!” and in response, the individual seated them. They were both asked what they would have to drink, to which the girl responded by asking for water, and started looking over the menu.

Across the room, the only other patron was a very formally dressed man, who was sitting alone at a booth, with just a coffee, and seemed to have his face plastered into a journal, with a pencil in hand, writing in it while occasionally glancing over in the pair’s direction.

MiscChaos/Vivi:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Vivi was currently temporarily out of the job, the last person she was meant to protect turned out to be wanted dead by almost everyone in existence it seemed, he was always on about something about “revealing the truth about the Wall.” Regardless, the trouble she quickly found herself in would be beyond even the best single bodyguard in the universe. She managed to get herself out of it before things got too bad however, and now she was waiting for someone worth her time to show up. Which usually didn’t take that long as lots of people wanted Bodyguard services these days. Usually ones dabbling in forbidden magical arts or other things that were opposed by the City State. After a few days of nothing, she finally got an offer. A letter from someone named Dr. Dinglefitz, who was apparently a widely respected, highly sought after, and very prestigious researcher in the field of magical creatures. He didn’t go into detail about why he wanted to be protected, most people don’t in this business, as it mattered little, a job was a job, and any questions that could be asked, would be in relation to things that were none of your business. He was in Korat and felt he needed someone by his side, and the pay was amazing, several times what she usually made, for what seemed like a simple job of protecting a doctor.

At the very end of the message was a location and a notice that stated that his client would be there, as would he, wanting Vivi to meet him there.

Fantasy/Salsa:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Salsa was currently residing in the southern portion of the primarily human land called Rasard. The people in Rasard seemed particularly friendly compared to the rest of the world she's seen, and most people didn’t seem to care about her demonic nature if they ever found out. Compared to Jugar, which usually featured outright fear or hatred, and Korat which featured caution. However, Salsa was after one thing in particular; Knowledge of the giant construct called the “Desolate Wall”. The Desolate Wall separates the Southern Lands from the rest of the civilized world, and from what she could tell, the Southern Lands might be the best bet in finding out where she could return home. Every human she asked about the nature of the Southern Lands always revealed the same answer. No one knew. Most were content with not knowing, the wall was there for a reason and that was that. Some speculated that the Southern Lands is home to dark powers, and others think its a secret government area to hold political prisoners. Everything was speculation however, Salsa got no facts. However, the speculation that the Southern Lands was home to dark powers was the best lead she had to finding her way home. So she found herself in a town called Manak, just a mile from the wall. It’s large outline permanently covered the horizon towards the south, and large towers rose from it. The outline of large weaponry was also visible from the town.

Well, Vivi figures she should have known that job was going to go tits up. "Truth about the wall"? Either the man was nutty as trail mix or he was into something way too dangerous for his own good. Or both. There's no reason for one to exclude the other after all. At the very least, the latter was definitely true. There's only so much she can do for one already so thoroughly dead, it was all she could do just to get herself out of the situation without sharing the guy's fate! She supposes the brief dry spell is her just deserts. After all, no one wants a bodyguard that can't guard and even if the rest of her track record is rather impressive, people only remember your most recent stints. And her most recent job was a spectacular disaster. Still, she used the time constructively. Make sure no one's tailing her for the fallout and all that.

Almost miraculously once she was sure she was clear she received a new job. One that would have her made for a good, long period of time. She could use a vacation, she thinks. Hasn't had one in years! And the funds she makes for this job would allow her to take one somewhere nice. The guy is even famous, so everyone will know if he tries to slip out on the bill! Sure, being famous probably means that his trouble will be just as visible, but that's a job hazard. How much of a hazard... well, it'd probably be best to ask once she arrived. She just got out of a job where the heat was more than she could handle after all. Too many failed jobs in a row and no one would want her services any more and she'd have to go back to her previous job to build her credit back up. She absolutely doesn't want to do that, so it's essential that this goes off well.

She gathers her gear and sets off to the specified location. Hopefully nowhere too sketchy. She doesn't feel like beating the asses of drunken idiots who don't understand the meaning of "no". Unless it'd make her more impressive in her client's eyes. She's not sure of his temperament and some people really don't like unnecessary violence.

"Right..." Bella gave Nobor a look, not for the first time questioning his... well, if he really has his shit together, frankly. "Just wanted to make sure there weren't any mistakes." She still couldn't say she wasn't suspicious of the guy for suddenly showing up at her doorstep promising something as big as he did, however. She'd keep an eye out for anything weird he does, if anything at all. "When are we doing this and how dangerous is this thing? I've got a few tricks up my sleeve if we're expecting trouble, and I'm pretty good with a blunt object." She smirked at her remark. There've been a few times when she's had to teach a few idiots a lesson, whether it was not to steal from her, not to leer at her ass, or not to try anything else she wouldn't like. Her trusty wrench was her best friend and tool of destruction in that... wait, what did he say?

"Wait, what's that about extraction doing what now? Would you try something like that if I said no?" She glared at him, body tensing up to quickly slam the door and reach for the nearest weaponizable item if his reaction was even remotely threatening.

"My god this girl is going to be the death of me!" Alexander thought as he was pulled to and fro by Sephera. When they finally reach the restaurant, the young man has to catch his breath. Just as he regains his composure, Sephera hugs his arm again. Trying to keep a steady face, he accompanies the restaurant attendant to their seat. It was rather quiet for this time of day, with only one other patron in the restaurant.

When asked for their order, Alexander knew exactly what he wanted to order. But he decided to wait until Sephera was ready and asked for water as well. With the two of them some what alone, it was time to do a bit of prodding.

"So Sephera, why did you want to go for dinner with me? I'm sure there are other Korat exchange students who would be more then happy to show you around." Alexander asked, deciding to go with a friendly, yet direct approach.

Salsa considered the wall for a long while. It was clear to her that her next destination was now somewhere beyond it, for better or for worse. However, there didn't seem to be any clear way through the wall. Most likely, it was built to keep something from crossing the border. Of course, this didn't mean it was an impossible endeavor. Most likely, only guards were allowed up on the wall, and up there was the place where she would be the most likely to find herself a way down to the other side. The rumors didn't much scare her, what scared her was the thought of never being able to get back home. So, spurred by her desire to find herself a way back home, she began asking around for a way to come into contact with those in charge of guarding the wall. While it was a long shot, she was hoping that asking nicely might allow her to gain passage to the other side, or at least up onto the wall. It wouldn't really matter if she would have to go there under surveillance or not, she wanted to find out as much as she could about the lands beyond the wall.

If not, then she might resort to either joining, or infiltrating the guards. Although, she hoped it wouldn't come to such time consuming options.

Blah/Bella
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Nobor’s ridiculous smile seemed to falter briefly and twitch for a moment, but only a moment, then he shook his head and brought up his hands in the surrender pose, flexing his fingers strangely as he responded coolly… well as coolly as someone like him could “You’ll simply have to live your life with this thing permanently attached to you, and with the possibility that someone else with the same magic knowledge that I have won’t be as kind as I and rip away its connection to you forcibly and painfully, resulting in… well, imagine the worst pain you’ve ever felt, multiplied by a million, and if the creature is really connected into you, it may result in physical harm to you profuse bleeding, skin lesions, vomiting… Death from five or more different things. Disconnecting a powerful magical creature from one’s soul can be VERY painful indeed, and damage on one’s soul from forceful disconnection can be significantly worse, and far more dangerous. Few people, as a matter of fact, are as qualified as I to deal with such a thing. I can guarantee you at least one would prefer the forceful way. Anyway, know that I, personally, am only trying to help you and won’t do anything to you without your expressed consent. I do, however, want to inform you that we should act as soon as possible, as every second passing lets the creature further sink its claws into your very being.... Not only this, but as the creature’s connection to your soul grows stronger, other far less helpful individuals may be able to track you… and I’ll have you know, it’s easier to learn the forceful way than the gentle way.” Nobor seemed surprisingly cool and composed as he talked, compared to how he was before, as if he actually DID know what he was talking about, however, he followed this up slowly slipping a palm-sized electronic device out of his shirt pocket, but it slipped out of his hand, dropping onto his foot, then howled and hopped around in agony. He then realized how he must look and slicked his hair back again and leaned back against the wall, this time without missing it.

Mark3000/William
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Sephera kept the same radiant smile she always had when he questioned her. She then let out a small giggle and gave him a look that said ‘Isn’t it obvious?’ Speaking in a tone finally within comfortable volume levels she said, “How could I NOT want to know you more? Just look at yourself! pink hair, blue eyes, whacky clothing… Its sooooooooo eeexooooootic!” She said it in a way that sounded like she means it as a compliment. “Besides, pink is my faaavorite color!” She added lastly, her smile becoming slightly more sultry before going back to normal. When the waitress came back Sephera ordered, unsurprisingly, a steak, ‘extremely’ rare, the most expensive item on the menu.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, the other patron was joined by another man, wearing a pair of sunglasses and a black suit, both in matching clothes. He sits down and immediately begins talking with the original patron, glancing over at the couple and writing stuff down as they talk.

Fantasy/Salsa
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Finding someone who knew a guard stationed at the wall wasn’t very hard at all. It only took asking 4 people before someone said they had a friend stationed on the wall. Not really all that suprisinging giving how close the town was to the wall. Though if she mentioned going beyond the wall, they would just laugh and say “That won’t happen.” They were still willing to drive Salsa to the wall if she so wished, saying she’d probably be allowed to at least look at it has lots of people who want to see beyond it.

MiscChaos/Vivi
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

The location as it turned out was a mechanics shop. Coming down the road she could see two people, a 25-ish year old guy in a professional looking uniform and younger girl in distinctly unprofessional clothing. They didn’t seem to have noticed her yet. And Vivi could easily guess that the older guy would be her contact. They were discussing something, but they finished just before she got within earshot… and then the older guy dropped something on his foot, and hopped around in pain for a moment. At that point she could easily come to the conclusion that this couldn’t be her contact, but it was the right time and place so… looks like it’s gonna be one of THOSE jobs.
