Edelin, and its great capital of Edlos, has fallen!
The army of demons was too much to bear, even for the righteous paladins of the west. Despite the efforts of the warrior clerics and paladins of Iomedae, they could do little but slow the tide of chaos sweeping the countryside. Then, the hour came when the enemy was on the very doorstep of Edlos. Many brave souls stood their ground and fought to the very last, but it was not enough.
Now, the horde has swept through the city, raping and pillaging for several nights. Following the destruction of the cathedral and the castle, there is now a lull as the main army has moved on to destinations unknown. Only small detachments remain in the formerly grand city, raping and growing fat with victory. Those who remained unknown, and unseen, during the incursion now have a small opportunity to escape.
Within the walls of Edlos and beyond, there is like to be found nothing but chaos. Other survivors fighting for their lives above all else, bandits, and of course, roaming packs of Imps, Orcs, and worse creatures.
You are but a handful of the small number of survivors who will try to make it out of the city, and by the grace of the gods, make it somewhere safer, for Edelin was anything but that...

Spoiler (click to show/hide):
As a paladin of Iomedae, you were fighting near the keep when it fell. You could do naught else but watch the castle explode, sending rock and steel in every direction into Lake Delrin and into the surrounding buildings. Following the clear defeat of the royal guard, you tried to evacuate as many people as you could to the docks before the demon hordes crashed upon it and destroyed every ship they could find.
You hid out for a few days, hoping you'd get your own chance to escape soon, and with the main horde moving on, you feel that chance is now.
You peek out from the window of your townhouse. You see no demons on your street, at the moment, and how you escape the city is up to you. Most of the buildings in the royal quarter are destroyed in some manner. The explosion and the following fires claimed many of the noble's houses.
There was no doubt demons were still in the city, and you knew some caution would be wise. Not to mention survivors who've turned their cloaks and would sooner rob a person than help them...

Spoiler (click to show/hide):
When the city fell, you were visiting a friend in the Inner Quarter. You were trying to convince them to take flee the city, along with your family, then the demon horde broke upon the city made breaches in the walls. You could do naught but save yourself, after a catapult claimed your friend. You haven't been able to make it back to your own family and discover if they've survived. You've hidden out in your late friend's townhouse, as you watched the Horde rampage through the streets.
However, a lull has come - the main horde has left the ruins of Edlos to its own demise. You have a chance to escape the city, or perhaps find your family. As you open your door and take a look around at the ruined Goddess Square, you find little to ease your worries. The statue of the goddess of Iomedae, built into the fountain, was desecrated with foul imagery depicting demon genitalia.
How you would escape, or find your family, would be up to you...

Spoiler (click to show/hide):
You were negotiating some goods with a merchant with the demon horde broke the walls of Edlos. Your intent was to sell what you had and escape with your loved ones. However, that plan disappeared as the monstrous creatures from realms beyond swarmed the streets without relent or mercy.
You could do little other than save yourself, with no way to escape or find a way to your family and friends. The merchant with you died to a demon plague over the next few days and to ensure you didn't catch it, you were forced to burn his corpse. You have no shown no symptoms of the illness, but you have an even greater task before you.
You must escape this city and find a way to other realms, ones that have not yet succumbed to the chaos and power of the abyss. As you look outside, you find nothing to guarantee safety, but you do see the immediate street is free of demonic presence.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):
You were paid by the town guard to keep order in your neighborhood. People were scared and riot was imminent and you were on the frontline with shutting down any disturbances or disorder in this tentative time of war. However, it was all for naught.
The Demonic Horde broke upon Edlos with a force never before seen in all of its centuries of history. The walls folded like paper to the abyssal artillery. The paladins and peasants alike fell in defense of the city. You fought to defend yourself against the stray demon here and there, but you knew the fight was lost, and took to hiding in your favored tavern. Over the next few days, the handful of survivors crept outside, one by one, eager to find their families, then safety. Now, you are the last one left and you've ran out of food supplies, no thanks to the survivors who demanded leaving with 'their share.'
With a tertiary glance around your neighborhood, you find the buildings here are mostly untouched. It seems the Horde was more concerned with pushing to the castle and the cathedral. You could only imagine what horrors were inflicted upon the High Priestess and the King. You could only be glad it was not you.
The immediate problem is how you will survive this warzone and how you will make it out alive and uncorrupt...

Spoiler (click to show/hide):
As an apprentice to a court mage, you were given a front row seat to the destruction of the castle and cathedral. A balor, a demon general ten feet in height with the capability of changing his size and strength, enlarged himself and in a gout of flame and steel, he cast the castle gate open wide, killing dozens of soldiers in the process.
At that point, the court mage you served teleported you both to safety. However, a stray fireball from the abyssal artillery claimed his life shortly after. You narrowly reached a nearby townhouse and hid in the basement. You heard demons enter and rummage through the house more than once, but they never found you. Now, after having not heard any soul, demon or Human, for a few days, you come out of the trap door in the basement. You find a meal's worth of rations and barely enough water to slake your thirst.
You're now left with the daunting task of escaping. The view outside this house was not reassuring. Most of the noble homes were cast asunder into flames and little else remains but rock and ash. The location of the cathedral is naught but a large crater and a few ruined walls. The castle fared slightly better, as it's still mostly intact, but half of its walls are but rubble now.
The main horde seems to have moved on, but how will you survive and escape from this hell hole?

Spoiler (click to show/hide):
You were assisting wounded soldiers and commoners near the northern wall when the abyssal army crashed upon the city. In a matter of hours, the walls were breached and the city fell. You helped as many as you could, but as the demons swarmed through the streets, the very ground beneath you cracked open, and you, along with many others, fell into the realm below Edlos.
You woke up sometime later from the fall, finding yourself in some unfamiliar tunnel. It was the sewers beneath Edlos and to your dismay, you were the only one to survive the fall. There were a handful of corpses around you in various states of death.
Getting out of the sewers may prove difficult, but once you do that, you could start considering how to leave the city, or perhaps to find more survivors like yourself. The occasional screech or animal howl echoes through the sewer tunnels and sends a chill down your spine.
