Faye didn't care much if the local inhabitants fed themselves and got weapons to fight with them or not. She was here to kill people, and if they proved to be traitors, then they would die, too. Still, it was better to die for the Emperor than to die for someone else. She moved with the others, back towards the plaza that had, thankfully, stopped being bombed by the remains of atmospheric fighter craft. There were still fires, and she still felt tense, but at least there was no need for overhead cover - they could concentrate on what was ahead. "Ten foes, with one separated from the group? We should strike rather than avoid, but from an angle they do not expect" she growled, narrowing her eyes and lazily spinning her sawblade

Selene sighed as she walked out with a bag of food to feed the people. Leaving it for them to do as they would need "We'll be back to get more of the food out." Selena said to them catching up to her squadmates. Seeing the threat near them she thought of the danger of the 10th rebel. "Draw their fire, I'll flush out their last man." Pulling her flamer out as it pieced itself together she began try and spot the last man before using her flamer to dispurse their forces.

As the kill team leaves the hab block Selene leaves behind food for the hungry and they quickly swarm fighting over the rations... their eyes were mad with hunger and a few looked at Selene. Had the team not been armed she got the sudden sick feeling these people might have attacked her to get more of the food. The group quickly crossed over to the courtyard lining up on the alcove leading into the garden. Two cultists were crouched over the dead body Faye had killed earlier while another two spoke in guttural tones to one another behind them. A long black blade rested at ones hip and judging by the black chains hanging from his robes he seemed to be the leader. He spotted Selene as she brought up her quickly assembled flamer and let out a shout of warning to late. The two cultist studying the body were incinerated instantly and screamed up at the sky as they killed over. The cult leader and his apprentice backed away from the flame blast but a quick three las shots clipped the leaders shoulder as he drew the sword. A normal man would have been stunned by the blow but the cultist instantly brought up his sword and began chanting. Faye moved forward to the closest target now that the line of fire had been cleared briefly and swung wide at the leaders assistant who staggered away towards his master. To their shock he plunged the blade in his allies back but instead of dying the cultists dark chant began to cause a horrible metamorphosis. The cultist let out a cry of pain and his eye sockets erupted in fire and his skin began to melt away from his body slowly. His arm grew three long tentacles that swept forward locking around Faye's neck and choking off her air supply. The other cultists patrolling the garden quickly converged firing shots to keep Selena and the Tech priest pinned, one even managed to graze the medics bicep leaving a nasty trail of blood, they used autoguns rather than las weaponry and the wounds didn't cauterize.

Across the garden in the guardhouse a few moments earlier Rosette questioned her captive. "Drath... no last name, miners don't get last names on asteroid 3-22. Those men out there are Thorne's personal lackeys... not my men. I don't particularly care for the zealots but they've helped us hold our ground against the Imperials so far so I've tolerated them. There is just something not right about them, or Thorne for that matter." Before he could explain any further screams from the garden alerted them to renewed fighting. Looking outside Rosetta saw a flamer being fanned across the group investigating the corpse and a brief firefight as the sentries began to converge on that entrance giving Rosetta an opportunity to slip by or fight now that the cultists all had their attention on the three new combatants.

Outside of the city Alanis began to look over the panel and recognized it as one of the internal climate controllers. The controls were locked down and fire suppression systems were offline which explained why the archives had been burned down so easy. Further down the spire would be the rest of the controls and most likely a rebel party guarding them. With that in mind Ash and Alanis began to carefully decent the stairs with Ash leading the way almost invisible in the night. Alanis actually bumped into Ash as they stopped to stare at the massacre in front of them. Over twenty rebels lied dead scattered around a small fenced in compound at the base of the pillar. All of them were riddled with small two to three inch cuts that seemed to go right through their bodies resulting in very messy and painful deaths. Most of them seemed to be at their stations or in the middle of drawing a weapon when they had been cut down and nearby walls and machinery showed similar two inch cuts even through steel.

Some sort of sabotage would be useful, but it's not needed. It is too late to save the archives, and if they contained more chaotic artifacts similar to the tome, it is better if they stay buried. The sight at the base of the stairway is more interesting. Again, Ash isn't disturbed by the pile of dead bodies, but their wounds and apparent speed with which they were killed causes her some concern. As the agent of Ordo Xenos, it is not the first time she's seen something similar. In fact, she has used this weapon herself on one of her infiltration missions. But just to confirm her suspicion, she starts looking for any Eldar shuriken left in one of the holes anyway...and for other traces of Eldar presence too, but she suspect they will be well hidden, if they still are in the area.

Alanis frowns when she finds out that the controls are locked down. It would explain all the fires, but even so, losing control of the environment system was a big loss in getting this city back into order. They would have to find some other way to clear the chaos that was going on here. When Ash moved on, Alanis followed quickly behind her, only to bump into her when they came across a disturbing scene. A gasp escaped Alanis' lips as she say the brutal scene before her. "Who or what could have possibly done this?" Alanis muttered, looking about to see if she could spot anything else nearby that could tell her of what happened here.

Rosette didn't like her chances of sneaking off with the wounded rebel slowing her down, too great a chance they would be spotted and she still needed him to open the maintenance tunnels. She didn't know who had started to shooting outside, maybe the heretics had turned on each other. If what Drath said was true the taint hadn't spread all the way through the ranks and the wayward sheep could be returned.

Steadying her aim, she drew a bead on the cult leader with her silenced bolter, taking him down the would give the attackers an advantage and the hellfire rounds should tear him apart.

After she fired would try to wedge the door closed with the cultist body and head upstairs to another vantage point to hopefully confuse her attackers as to were her shots came from. If they did locate her the stairs would funnel them inside the building for her flamer.

As the firefight had started with her getting two kills to her joy. Although recieving returning shots herself was not something she wanted. Realizing her position would be compromised soon she switched to her las pistol. Firing shots with more focus and accuracy than her Flamet could provide her.

Ash continues searching for clues as she answers Alanis's question. "Eldar, most likely. That may be a good thing, they hate Chaos and joined forces with the Imperium to fight it before. Convincing them we're on the same side, however.... And even as allies, they can't be trusted, they'll have their own alien goals."

The initial strike against the cultist had proven not as effective as Faye had liked. She was ready to strike again when he suddenly burst with mutation, tentacles lashing out from where he arm used to be, wrapping around her neck and listing her off the ground. Struggling for breath as the same time trying to not start babbling like a mad woman from the horrific sight in front of her, she braught up her saw to slice through the tendrils. If she could cut through them, and be able to breathe again, then she could attack the mutant again in close quarters - her stubgun was useless to her right now

The firefight in the gardens intensifies as Rosette fires from her secluded doorway pegging the chanting figure in the center of the battlefield. A large hole appears in his abdomen and his ritual is cut off with a gurgling cough. Three more quick lashots leave smoking quarter inch holes across his chest and he collapses. The cultists let out a cry of outrage advancing toward the group and taking more potshots at the exposed members. Rosette's position isn't noticed by the cultists but she relocates for good measure. Drath leans against he door as she heads up the stairs. "May as well be useful." He mutters acting as a human doorstop should anything try to breach her vantage point. Meanwhile Faye struggles for a moment pulling the tentacle away from her neck to take in a gasp of breath and drives her sawblade into the deformed cultists neck severing the head from the torso. The tendrils go slack and the body slumps to the ground, the nearest cultist sees she's out of the line of fire of any allies now and opens up firing the autogun on fully automatic by his hip. The bullets go wild scattering across the pillars nearby. Back at the entrance to the garden Selena leans out to take a shot only to be knocked onto the ground by a slug connecting with her vest. She's not injured but she has to take a deep breath before sitting up. A particularly lucky zealot fires a shot directly into the Tech priests respirator causing the woman to suck in a deep breath and collapse to her knees from the difficulty breathing. She needed medical attention quickly but moving out from her cover would put Selene in the line of fire for a few seconds if she moved to her downed comrade.

Ash and Alanis begin to comb over the scene. Even in the darkness Ash quickly evaluates the relative positions of the bodies, a few footprints, and the impact markings to determine exactly where the attackers stood and that they indeed used shuriken catapult technology. Reconstructing the firefight Ash quickly established a mental recording of what likley happened, the guards were all in sentry or patrol locations so they hadn't even been able to fight back against the ambush. A two dozen firing angles and a rough knowledge of human reaction time led her to believe the warparty was around six to fourteen Eldar and judging from the firing patterns they were Ulthwé. They left no surikens behind to confirm her theory but she felt fairly certain it was Ulthwé. She even found a few tracks the Eldar had left moving north towards the cliffs leading to the cities main entrance.

Alanis on the other hand was quickly stumped by the strange cuts and was forced to investigate other clues. Searching the bodies she found a dataslate detailing the maintenance outposts roster. All the bodies were accounted for and their current orders seemed to be disabling fire suppression and other emergency systems for the Tower of Knowledge. Beyond that the outpost didn't seem to have much control over the city but she did find a sewer access point on the schematics, it was only a few hundred meters to the north.

Rosette calmed herself as she took her new position, steadying her breath as she picked her shots. She stayed away from the window as she shot, so as not to silhouette herself as she picked off the cultists.

Alanis couldn't figure out much about who or what could have taken out these rebels, so she focuses instead on what their purpose was for being here. Her search eventually turns up a dataslate, and she frowns when she figures out what their prime objective was. "Looks like this group was aiming for the environmental controls after all," Alanis says with a sigh. "Specifically, they targeted the Tower of Knowledge's fire suppression system, among other things. Looks like they succeeded." She looks at the slate a bit more, and finds a sewer access point close by. "We can probably use the sewers to get around the city unnoticed. There's an entry point nearby. Any suggestions, Ash?"

Ash rises from the dead body she's examining. "Just a moment." Rosette should know about the status of the rest of her team. There's no guarantee vox signal will reach her from this deep, but there's no harm in trying. "Ash to sister Rosette. Archive has collapsed, the daemon has retreated, one psyker dead, rest of the team all right. Found evidence of Eldar presence, at least squad-sized, intentions unknown, but they've been killing cultists. We haven't found any way to get to the surface yet. Your status?" Ash didn't mentioned the book...there's no need to give Rosette more reasons to worry, but it's a matter which need to be taken care of immediately.

"My suit is damaged and you lack any protection. Hive's sewers carry extreme danger of diseases or toxins. I'm not recommending going there unless we find some hazmat suits. We're not in danger at the moment...what are your intentions with the heretical tome?" Ash eyes Alanis warily. She's proven herself loyal earlier, but you don't have to be an Inquisition's agent to know about the danger of mixing psykers and Chaotic artifacts.

Alanis turns to Ash, before pulling out the tome and taking a good look at it's front. "... To be honest, part of me just wants to let this book burn," Alanis says. "But we both saw that the daemons were after it. It might just give us a way to fight against them, and probably the rebels too... I'll need to find some time to read it, see how dangerous this book really is, and if I can't control it... Then we'll just have to destroy it. I don't want Odessa's sacrifice to go to waste, but I don't want us to fall to the warp either."

"We should destroy it, not meddle with it further. Daemons will be robbed of their prize, we'll be sure it won't fall into the rebel's hands...and I hope you know what's the Imperial policy regarding Chaotic relics like this. You don't know what you're doing, and we won't be able to stop another daemon if there's any accident. Whole sectors have been lost because some psyker didn't understood some knowledge is forbidden for a reason."

The sprey of arteral blood splattered up Faye's arm as she drove the saw blade through the mutant's neck, not stopping until he was fully decapitated and slumped on the floor. Their numbers were thinning already, but she didn't care about tactical options right now - the thrill of combat pushed her forward, her sights set on the one who had just opened up on her with a miserable burst from his autogun. He would be next. Lunging forward, she put all of her power into a sprint, aiming to slice him open as soon as he was within arm's reach, and to the Warp with any other heretic who got in her way - they would all die!

"If we hadn't gone after it, the daemons would have been able to claim it regardless.... but I guess you're right. We probably can't control the powers that this book holds," Alanis says, passing the book to Ash. "Here, take it and lets get this out of the way now, before anything else happens."

Noticing the shots landed on her ally, Selena quickly tried to cross from cover to cover to assist her comrade. All the while taking pot shots at those still trying to gun her down. If they were to lose another soldier the chances of this mission just falling apart would increase. With some hope the shield should allow her to feel more comfortable.

In the gardens the firefight continues with Rosette taking pot shots at the cultists from behind their ranks. She manages to pin one of them down behind the flaming wreck of the crashed assault craft. The other three advance until Faye charges strait at the nearest one and eviscerates him in a gruesome display sending limbs flying in all directions. The cultists let out shrieks of terror at the brutal display and begin falling back towards the far side of the Garden that leads to the starport. Selena moves over to the tech priest as the lines of fire have been cleared and crouches down patching up the priest respirator. The woman seems heavily dazed by the attack and mutters something that sounded like thanks and the wound is no longer life threatening. As the cultists disperse Rosette receives a broken transmission from the other kill team.

"Ash ... sister Rosette ... collapsed ... daemon ... psyker dead ... all right ... Eldar presence ... intentions unknown ... killing cultists. We ... found ... surface yet ... status?"

The garbled transmission cut off at that point without a signal boost communications between the two teams would be difficult. Speaking of which Rosetta still had to meet with the group in the gardens, no doubt it was one of the other kill teams deployed to the city.

Meanwhile at the base of the cliffs far below them Alanis and Ash began debating what to do with the book. Keeping it wrapped in cloth for safety Alanis pulled the book out of her pack and found the flesh that bound the tome was warm and almost writhing under her grip. The movement left a sick feeling in her stomach as she held it out for Ash but before either of them could continue she felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, she had the strong impression something else was lurking nearby but had no idea what or where. There were to many hiding places around the dead complex and in the dead of night it would be nearly impossible to discern any movement. Her eyes went up to the walkway they had descended to the roofs of the small buildings and the doorways, none of which held anything useful. Ash seemed to preoccupied with the book to notice any danger.

Just as Alanis was about to hand the book over to Ash, she felt a familiar sensation across her body, the kind that told her that something from the warp was nearby. She immediately withdrew the book and began looking around, trying to see the source of this sensation. "... Something's here. Something from the warp," Alanis whispers, pulling out her stub automatic and checking the rounds in it. "We can't stay here, we need to move someplace safer. If they're after the book, then we'll really have to destroy it."
