Kayin
diff 6, you rolled: 3

The building seems completely foreign to you, you aren't sure what culture or from what era this is from, however what you can recognize is a solid foundation and narrow entryway, reinforcing the idea that being here may be more defensible than the open sands

Social: 2 (2)

The entire group begin to pick up speed as the chase is announced, only Nova lagging behind, somewhat intentionally apparently as she looks ready for a fight. Mitch and Crake for their part seem fully intent on making it to solid ground as their next course of action. Luckily it seems they had been close enough to this mysterious structure for everyone to make it to the stone foundation safely, however that doesn't stop all of the monsters as one of the creatures scrambles up out of the sand onto the stone and starts flailing towards the party aggressively, it's tiny feet pattering about as it snakes overland.

Nova
diff 2, your rolled: 5, 2, 1

Nova hangs back to protect the rear as everyone sprints ahead, still staying on the move herself as she readies her chains as a flail. She smacks a fin causing one of the sharks to veer away from them, either startled or disoriented. As the party makes it to the solid foundation, one of the sharks ends up jumping out of the sound and scrambling up across the stone, apparently unable to swim through solid rock the same way as sand, it appears somewhat clumsy when attempting to walk on land and after several solid hits in the face from Nova, it eventually gives up its chase and dives back down into the sand, leaving behind one long bony tooth that got knocked from its mouth during the assault. By the time Mitch and Crake have turned back to check on their rear, the sharks seem to have shied away, their fins turned around and meandering back the way they came.

The ruin was unknown to her, 100%. It didn't resemble anything she had read or studied about, much to her frustration. Still, the fact that the place had steady worked stone seemed promising. Indeed, it was, for the sharks couldn't swim through it and one of them tried to follow after them, though nowhere near as efficient of a killing machine on solid ground as it was in the sand. Kayin watched in awe as Nova took it on and seemed to easily beat it back without need of either of the two soldiers to get involved, her chest heaving as she stood there for a good moment while watching the things retreating forms.

"H~Hope they're gone for g-good this time." She manages to stammer out after a moment, though she finds her elation that they all got here alright fading at the realization that she wouldn't have been in a position to do anything to help out.

However, now that they were here, she starts trying to look around at the place, trying to see if there was anything of interest. Though given it was night and this was a ruin, that wasn't going to get very far without light.

"Either of you have a flashlight? Or something to make a torch?" She asks after a moment of the two men.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Sorry for the late reply. It's sort of a hectic week for me.

Luckily for Nova it seems everyone else are at least decent runners, but a little unlikely is that the two guards of their group are currently running ahead. Honestly a smart move on a individual level, but maybe not the best move as a unit. Then again however they were hardly all buddy buddy yet, the their weapons would be hard to use until the sand sharks breached the sand. Her chains though? Perhaps... if she was smart about it.

As she runs she lowers her speed a little bit, taking a position a rear as she wraps on her chains around her right arm and holds the other in loops with her left hand. She starts to run in quick zig zag patterns, hoping the quick movement and the dense nature of the sand might limit the turning of the sand sharks. An action that seems to work as the closest sand shark presses forward slightly. She swaps directions quickly, watching in the corner of her eye as the creature shifts to track her, but isn't able to turn as quickly as she can. With a simple graceful movement she pirouettes on one foot, spinning in place and letting the chain in her right hand swing wide. The chain clinks nosily at first as it extends, then goes taught as the swing speeds up, the manacle at the end moving with enough force to tear flesh if used against another human. It smashes into the side of sand sharks dorsal fin, making the limb jar to the right as she scraps a layer of scales off, not causing any dire damage, but as the swing suddenly veers away from her and moves in a random motion Nova is satisfied she caused it some pain or discomfort of some kind. "So it's fins are more sensitive? At least the top one maybe...", she muses as she finishes her spin and catches the rest of the chain, quickly going back to running.

She zig zags a few more times before they make it to the rocks, the sand sharks all seeming to swap directions a little with each movement, but aiming ahead of her as if to cut her off and intercept her. With her randomly changing directions though the rest don't make enough ground to catch up to them, sand still proving to be quite a bit thicker then water despite the way they seem to swim through it. As everyone scrambles toward the building though one suddenly breaches the sand and tries to scramble up the rock, it's dozens of odd wolf paw like feet struggling for purchase on the stone as its move back and forth like snake or, more aptly, a fish out of water. With her chain already swinging above her head she cuts it off and soon starts smashing it in the side of the head over and over, back stepping with each strike as her left hand is prepared to throw the spare chain into it's hellish mouth the moment it dares to open it. Eventually though she seems to smash a hole in it's scales after a half dozen strikes, and then the creature backs off, knowing when to call it quits. It back slides and dives back into the sand, quickly swimming away.

Nova watches for a few moments to see what they would do, but is pleased they choose to retreat completely rather then circle the area. She sucks in a deep breathe after all the exertion, her chest heaving a little as she gathered up the chain. When she gets it close though she notices the few speckles of blood she managed to draw on the manacle, and suddenly finds herself getting a short head rush. "Woo... post fight jitters. Nothing new girl. The stakes are final out here after all. Only normal.", she says to herself, then walks back up the rock toward the building where the others were with a confident sway in her step. "I scared 'em off hopefully...", Nova says, twirling her the end of improvised chain weapon with her right hand. "Can we actually get in this building?", she then asks.

The moment she made it to the solid foundation Scarlet was quick to get behind Mitch and Crake as they were the ones with the weapons. At first Scarlet thought they were safe on the solid ground, though she forgot that these sand sharks had tiny but many legs and she was quickly reminded as one jumped onto the foundation and came right at them!

Luckily it seems that it couldn't stand well on solid land as it walks almost clumsily on the foundation, which made it easy for Nova to use the chain as a weapon to knock it back. It seems that Nova had the same idea as her to bring the chain to be a weapon, though she doubts she would use it as well as Nova though who seemed to be much stronger than her. With a big disadvantage in terms of movement it seems that the sand shark was quick to make a retreat but not before Nova knocked one of it's sharp teeth out. "Damn Nova... I almost feel bad for the thing... almost." She said as she watches the beasts flee before she spots the big tooth on the ground and decides to pick it up, being careful to not cut herself on any sharp parts of it. "Think this can be used as a weapon?" She asks the others as she holds it up and inspects, seeing if it'll work better as a dagger, sword, or spear depending in the length.

Spoiler (click to show/hide):

yeah it’s all good, my work is a lot busier lately so my posting may be slower as well

Desert Temple

The group pauses at the mouth of the mysterious structure, having escaped the sand-shark chase. Crake stands over what looks like a tall rectangular entryway and gazes down into the darkness. “Looks like there’s some steps leading down to somewhere. I don’t see any other entrances.” Mitch meanwhile has a seat on the steps leading up to the entrance outside, looking over at the tooth Scarlet is holding. He reaches behind himself and pulls out an electric lantern and slides it over towards the others as he says, “I ain’t about to crawl down into some ole sand hole, but I’m happy to wait and make sure them sharks are gone while you have an adventure. I think that tooth of yours might make a decent knife if you can find something to tie it with.” The tooth in question is about the length of Scarlet’s forearm.

The clicking sounds of the sharks can still be heard through the night air, but they have seemed to have lost interest in the group for now.

Kayin goes ahead and takes the light in question, though not without muttering a "Thank you." to Mitch. Even if he might not care, and even if perhaps out here in the warplands manners might not matter as much, they were too ingrained in her not to make use of. Turning the lantern down into the darkness, she said, "It'd probably be good to at least check a bit inside. If for no other reason than to make sure there won't be any unpleasant surprises from within." She snorted as she added, "With who knows what other things being possible out here, it'd be just our luck to find out there's zombies or mummies or something in a place like this. Or weird warp cultists who decide we'd make lovely additions to their order... or sacrifices."

She stopped her rambling there, pinching herself as she muttered, "A-Anyways, anyone want to come with?"

"Well... there could be just about anything in there.", Nova says a little apprehensively as she stares at the entrance. A simple sandstone staircase that descended down into the darkness. "Part of me wants to just move on, but... it doesn't look like it can be to big. If we're lucky maybe this is an old stash site of equipment that somebody used to use. I think we should check it out quick, but if it turns out to be bigger then we expect then we should just curb our expectations and head for the woods."

With that said Nova moves to take a side behind Kayin. She'd prefer to be in front of the girl since she didn't seem to have much experience in fighting, but Nova needed to the light to see what was ahead much like anyone else.

"Well till I do I can use it as a shank I guess, or just use the base as a handle." Scarlet said after Mitch told her she can make a knife from the tooth she picked up before she notices a couple of the others moving over to the going down into the ruins. "Um... is it a good idea to be exploring some ruins? I like treasure as much as the next person but is it safe at all?" She asked as she walks up to them. "While we're... somewhat armed it could be dangerous..."

She then turns to Mitch. "At least call down to us when the sharks are gone so we can leave. I think we all want out of this desert filled with sand sharks as soon as possible."

"We might have to hold out here a moment while we wait for the sharks to move on completely. And if we're gonna have to stay here a bit, might as well make sure nothing's gonna come out of the place to grab us." Kayin said with a shrug. With at least two of the others seeming ready to head in and down, she carefully began to make her way into the darkness, the electric torch held tightly in hand as she used the light to illuminate what lay before them.

Descending into the temple

The group starts to make their way down the steps into darkness, led by Nova and Kayin with the light. The bricks are weathered with age, but the walls at least seem structurally stable. As they move down the spiraling stairs the light occasionally reveals stylistic carvings of bats chiseled into the walls, some more natural looking and other more anthropomorphized:
Spoiler (click to show/hide):

Image

As they travel further the figures seem to trend towards more and more human like, with other animalistic features even starting to appear such as foxes, jackals, and even one bear-person.

After what feels like descending two whole stories down a dim, claustrophobic stairwell, the group reaches an open chamber that is able to fill more clearly with the light from the lamp. To their right appears to be what was once an entrance, now filled in with sand, and to the left is a large extravagant sarcophagus behind a pedestal, with more stairs leading downward. Unlike the designs from earlier, this standing remarkably well preserved sarcophagus leaned against the wall seems to be designed fully in the image of a human and it is laden with silver and gold. The pedestal that it appears to be "watching" over is a chest-height pillar carved from a single slab. Atop the pedestal is a curious device composed of a multitude of pipes, either metal or of very smooth stone, and three glass chambers, one on the end with a funnel as an input, one in the middle that is slightly larger and features a hand crank, and then another one on the far end that is just as large as the original put contains a spigot instead.

Kayin again wracks her mind for anything that this could be tied to as they pass these statues. She wonders at the possible significance of the change from animals to more anthromorphic forms as they continue down. Just how old was this place? Who had built it? So many questions ran about her mind, and a part of her suddenly wondered if any of the various cities did anything akin to archaeological digs. Were it not for her being banished from her home, the idea of doing something like that would sound rather appealing to her. As it was though, her rising curiosity and wonderment was tinged with the reminder she'd never get to return to her home, leaving her with a sort of sad smile on her face.

When they arrive in the chamber, she lets out an "Ooooh~?" As she glances about, particularly as she sees the sarcophagus and the pedestal. Slowly, she approaches both, looking over both in turn as she finds herself wondering just what they are. "Wonder who was placed here... someone important, obviously, but who did so?" She murmurs aloud, before turning her attention more fully to the pedestal. She doesn't move to touch anything yet, instead giving it a very detailed examination as she sought to try and glean anything of use from it. (Bid: 1 Mental)

Nova keeps step with Kayin as they descent, ready to lash out with her chain if need be, but nothing moves and the place is filled with only the silent sound of their breathing as they descend. As they go however they pass by a myriad of motifs chiseled into the walls. It all looked pretty ancient to her, which was a little exciting to be honest given that she had never left Thunder City before. She had seen things like this in ancient movies, but to see it for real was interesting, even if she hadn't the slightest idea who made it, how old it was, or... anything really. What she did get a kick out of though was the various styles of bats. Granted mostly it was the... details that catch her eyes, each seeming to sport a rather oversized dick and balls for their relatively cartoonish size. Amusing as it was though she chokes back a chuckle and resists the urge to make a dick joke. Maybe once they had made sure the area was actually safe.

The stairs are short enough thankfully, coming into a strange chamber with a intricate sarcophagus that may or may not have a mummy in it watching over a pedestal with a strange and intricate device on it. One that seemed... oddly out of place to her with all it's maybe metal piping. There was another exit as well, but it was blocked by a torrent of sand so it seemed this was their only real area to explore. "Funnel on the left, hand crank in the middle, spigot on the right. Hmmm... I wonder if the thing even works.", Nova remarks, walking near to the device on the pedestal. She doesn't touch it yet mind you, since Kayin appeared to be studying it rather intently. However if Kayin is unable to glean any information from her observation Nova would just try using the hand crank in the middle and seeing what happens.

Scarlet sighs a bit. "Guess you got a point..." She said before following the other women down into the ruins. She just hopes that they won't regret going down there...

Descending down into this strange ruins she notices all sorts of carvings on the walls and how they change, wondering if they actually mean anything. She keeps her hands on the big shark tooth, ready to use it in case anything came at them from the shadows. Soon they came into an open chamber with what looks like a sarcophagus against a wall with silver and gold and then a pedestal with some sort of weird looking device on the it. "This place is weird..." She said as she looks around the room. She tries to see if she can't identify anything in the room. During her many years as a thief she has stolen a number of things, including artifacts and the like and has had to research them from time to time before doing her heists so she might be able to recognize something. Kayin
Diff 4, you rolled: 5

Kayin carefully begins examining the strange device. It looks just light enough to potentially take and carry with them, but she is careful not to disturb anything just yet. She circles all around the device examining the connections and compartments, and Kayin realizes that in a central shelf there are the tell-tale signs that during the use of this thing, it typically gets filled with sand. A filtration device? It makes sense as it seems the whole purpose of this object is to take in liquid from one end and output liquid from the other. Perhaps some kind of purifier?

Meanwhile, Scarlet starts to sniff around for any other treasures, slowly meandering around the edges of the lamp light to find goodies. Nova is staring down the strange device being investigated by Kayin, leaving the girls distracted elsewhere as scarlet unknowingly passes by an opened crack in the sarcophagus. A cloth-wrapped hand reaches out to grab Scarlet's shoulder as she is suddenly given the sensation of warmth and comfort. Rather than immediate alarm, Scarlet is given a momentary daydream of something akin to a sauna vacation where she should just relax and take a break and not worry about anything at all. That is when the loud sound of cracking echoes through the chamber as the front of the sarcophagus begins to crumble away, revealing an almost fully bandage masculine figure holding onto Scarlet's shoulder, showing only fanged teeth and a single red eye beneath their wrappings.

Nova had been content to simply watch Kayin as she went about studying the strange device, the black eyed girl humming and hawing and perhaps occasionally mumbling something to herself. She had gotten so focused on that though she neglects to keep an eye on Scarlet where she was checking along the edges of the room within the light of the electric torch. It's only the sudden crashing of crumbling stone where Nova sees Scarlet being... not held exactly, not yet at least, by what appears to be literal mummy of all things, but simply grabbed by the shoulder. Scarlet appears to have a absent look to her, as if she wasn't even noticing what was happening, but as Nova sees the single red eye and very sharp fanged teeth.

"What the fu-Grrr", Nova says, not bothering to complete her swear as her mind goes back into combat mode as it were. She widens her stance and begins to swing the chain in her right hand again. "Stay back Kayin, just give me some light or maybe leave torch and try to get Crake or Mitch to come down here.", Nova suggests, though her tone might make it sound more like an order. Rather then wait anymore though Nova is quickly on the move, circling around the mummy to get to the side where it's arm was holding Scarlet's shoulder. Once she did she'd quickly strike out with the chain, aiming to wrap the manacled end around the things arm quickly and yank it's arm off Scarlet, hopefully giving her an opening to get away. Scarlet walks around the room, making sure to watch her step for any traps. Being an expert thief has trained her to be able to spot traps and avoid setting them off... too bad that didn't help her in noticing a hand reaching out from a crack in the sarcophagus as she was passing by it. It grasps her shoulder, making her stop but instead of making a noise of surprise or panics she lets out a light gasp as a strange relaxing sensation washes over her. Her body sways a bit as she visibly relaxes under the mummy's hand as her mind goes numb as well. She snaps out of it though when she hears the front of the sarcophagus crumble away and she turns her head to see the full form of the mummy. "Wh-What the-" Before she can finish she notices Nova charging in and she tries to duck as she sees Nova trying to strike with her chain and sees if she can try to escape from the mummy's grip.

"I... I think this is some sort of filtration device. For water or, for something, I'm not sure." Kayin says finally after a moment as she finishes examining the device. "We could probably take it with us. Could come in handy!" She sounds rather chipper, glad she was able to figure such a thing out. Then the sound of creaking, and then, crumbling, draws her attention to what is happening. Her eyes shoot open and she nearly lets out a scream of fright, stopping herself only by clapping her own hand over her mouth. Who knows how stable this place is, or what else might be here!

She turns the torch onto the thing, half wanting to run up the stairs to fetch the other two. But if she was being honest... Mitch probably wouldn't help. Crake might, but that was a might. Besides, Nova had so far been really good, she could certainly take this thing on! Given it had only one eye, she found herself saying, albeit with fear and anxiety in her voice,

"T~Try hitting its eye!" It seemed a good enough weak spot to work with!

Everything happens suddenly as the group is alerted by the reveal of the mummy. Scarlet is broken from her brief trance, both by the loud crashing sound behind her as well as the physical removal as the mummy get wrenched back by Nova's signature chains. Kayin leans protectively over the potentially valuable discovery she's made and turns the light of the lantern directly towards the mummy. The mummy emits an inhumanely high-pitched shriek as it is suddenly thrust into the light and caught around the neck by a swinging chain. With the creature caught off guard, Nova is able to get in some solid blows, maintaining her choke hold with the chain. However after fruitlessly clawing at its neck and gnashing its teeth, one of the mummy's bandaged arms suddenly erupts into a dangerously clawed limb fully covered in short-haired fur. With this newfound mobility the mummy elbows Nova hard right in the gut, giving it the chance to break free and regard the group with aggressive intent, wincing slightly from the shining light. "Sac-ri-fice!" The creature howls hoarsely as it reaches back towards Scarlet.

"Everyone for the stairs!" Kayin shouts, or more like screams, keeping the light on the thing even as she tries to lunge herself forward to grab Scarlet and help pull her up the stairs faster. (Bid Physical 1) The device might be useful, but saving each other takes priority first. Maybe if they can kill or incapcitate the thing, they could come back for the filtration device. As it is, she'd rather the lot of them get out and far away from that thing!

Nova's initial plans turns out be a success as she manages to yank the mummy's arm off of Scarlet, giving her some room to scramble away while also giving Nova more room to swing her chains around. She yanks the chain back, making the thing go off balance briefly, but as Kayin shines her light on it the thing suddenly screams, loud and shrill. "Ah! Fucking Christ!", Nova says, cringing from the sound briefly, but keeps up the attack, smashing the chain into the the damn thing and doing her best to keep the thing off balance. In fact it all seems to go rather well, Nova managing to swing a chain around it's neck and catch the manacled end with her other hand and allowing her to yank the thing back. It's tough though, forcing her to lean back heavily and use it's height against it. Given that it was easily bigger then her, she needed to fight smart, and using it's high center of gravity was a good start. If she could keep it off balance, then maybe she could use her other chain to knock it out if she could just knock it over first.

Alas it wasn't meant to be. She nearly has it, the thing fruitlessly clawing at the chain as it tried to go toward Scarlet, seemingly dead set on her. Everyone suddenly gets a sudden shock though when one it's arms just... transforms though, becoming some furred clawed monster of a limb that reminded her a werewolf or something. It quickly introduces her to it, elbowing her hard and knocking the wind out of her, making her lose her grip on one end of the chain and letting it break free from her. As it stumbles into the light toward Scarlet speaking of sacrifices though Nova is quick to adapt, this time deciding to take the low road as she lashes out with her chains again, but this time toward it's feet, hoping to snare it's ankles and make it fall over so Kayin and Scarlet had some time to withdraw.
