The day had continued to pass in a pace that seemed like a blur to Gavin. They had entered into the chemistry lab, the one class he had looked forward to since the first day he entered this school at the lower grades. Many times had walked past the room, glancing at the students smiling and conducting experiments that seem both genuinely fun as well as as interesting. The students sat in two rows, the seats arranged in a semi circle around a lecture on the far side of the class-room, the side that was dedicated to the lecture component of the class. The teacher was an elderly woman wearing a lab-coat, it's color being a plethora of smears and drips that composed nearly every color of the rainbow, but favoring the rusty red colors that dirtied the length of the edges where contact must have been frequently.
Behind the lectern was a drop down screen, a simple motorized screen that had slid down into place. The teacher was to the point, eloquent, and relatively passionate about what it was she taught. Gavin sat in one of the chairs, the fold out portion of the bucket seat digging into the back of his pant leg as the fold out arm wrest where he took notes continued to creak and groan, many more seats in the classroom making the same noise as the students continued to shift awkwardly in the seats. He took down the dates of assignments, exams, and the breakdown of the grading scheme, making sure that he made no errors, despite the fact that the teacher gave out a handheld. With the quick introduction done, Gavin, Angela, Saigras, and a few others were on the other side of the room, the lab section. There were rows of lab tables, each with built in gas outlets, built in sinks. Along the walls were fume hoods, scientific equipment. The wall behind where Gavin sat was the location of the chemical locker, as well as the two chemical shows and eye washers that were part of safety protocol.
The first experiment was nothing too complicated, a simple experiment to show what they would be doing long down the road, a simple example of mixing two liquid chemicals to form a precipitate. The teacher continued to lecture them as she went up and down the parallel arranged rows, distributing papers. The assignment was to be done in groups of two, and right away Gavin's eyes shot to Angela. She looked to him, before looking to Saigras, what he assumed to be the same look of disdain she had with her when they first met in the park. What had gotten into her Gavin wondered to himself. In the time it took for summer to come and go, she had grown so distant to him, clingy, accusing, and insecure. Already she was trying to assert herself against that of Saigras, already Lanx words coming back to haunt him. She did value his every word, didn't she?
He looked over to Siagras, his mind and heart teling him that he wanted to work with her, to experience a new friendship, but already his loyalty to her twisted his own wants into the background. He let out a sigh. Quickly he turned on the swivel stool he sat upon, counting the people in the class. It was an even number, and once again she looked at him to make a decision. "Angela, you can take Sagrias, I will look for a partner" he said with a simple smile. He wanted Angela to give the delinquent a chance, it was the least he could do for the girl that shared a meal with him and gave him advice on his future. Perhaps that could ease up a bit of the tension he begun to pick up through out the day already.
He looked back between the two women, not sure how either would react.
